No Scott, the criteria, as it were, was an implication by Bitonti that Donnie Henderson was not a HC candidate, because he is a little bit screwy in the noggin'.

I simply brought up Buddy Ryan as an example of another DC who had a rep for having bats in the belfry, who was afforded an opportunity to become a HC.

YOU took umbrage with the fact that I used an adjective to describe Buddy Ryan as a "good" coach. You then IN PROTOTYPICAL HERMAPHRODITE FASHION entered into the discussion the fact that Buddy Ryan never won a playoff game, therefore I must be bonkers in the head myself to describe him as a "good" coach, and yet, according to me, good ol' Hermy is a "dolt", even though he won TWO- that's right, ladies and gentlemen, two whopping playoff games.

What any of this has to do with Donnie Henderson as a potential HC candidate or the price of frogs legs in Paris is beyond me.

Jetmo-Sorry you had to get so worked up about this.

It only struck me as ODD that a person who rails against one Head Coach because the best thing people can say about him is that he went to the playoff in 3 of his 4 years, turns around and calls another head coach, who NEVER won a playoff game, a good coach.

I think the most simplest thought process would see there is a contradiction there. That is all.

You have every right to call Buddy a good coach, just as you do to call Herm a dolt. Just don't think I won't point out your somewhat skewed crtieria, as you have laid it out. No harm, no foul.

Skewed criteria? You're the one with skewed criteria. Rich Kotite won a playoff game with the Eagles, and Dave Wannstedt won a playoff game with the Dolphins, but I guess those guys still retain their status as "dolts" because they didn't accomplish the magic number of two playoff wins. Since Herm has two, we'll just arbitrarily make that the yardstick by which to measure "goodness" or "doltness". How clever.

I know how difficult it must be for Hermaphrodites to come up with ways of validating Herm's existence. The "3 playoff appearances in 4 years" was getting stale, but you breathed new life into it, by adding that twist.

Thank you for your approval and permission to call Buddy Ryan a good coach, and Herm a dolt. I appreciate it.

Moses-In there ANY circumstance that you could see a Head coach for the Jets coaching 5 years, not winning ANY playoffs during that tenure, and you calling him a "good" coach and you would be satisfied with those results? Honestly?

Please stop trying to cloud the issue by dragginmg other coaches names into trhis dialogue. YOU brought up Buddy Ryan and said he was a good coach, not me. I am not debating any other coach here.

I am just trying to understand why Buddy Ryan, not anybody else, is a good coach in your mind. I have plenty of Eagle friends who think otherwise, as well as other Eagle friends who believe he is a good coach. It is a source of constant discussion.

Scott, correct me if I'm wrong, but I assume the implication of this is that beating the Colts in '02 and the Chargers last year is supposed to be a very big deal to me. It's not.

Look, the bottom line is this:

If Hendu gets offered a HCing gig, and the only way to keep him here is to dump Herm and promote Donnie, I'm down with the program.

Horseshoe Harry's like Herm are a dime a dozen; but a guy like Donnie Henderson, who inherited a defense that was garbage for 3 years, and turned it around in 6 weeks, is special. That's coaching. That's motivating.

Maybe Bitonti's right, maybe Hendu has a rep for being a cracked bell, or he's a Monte Kiffen/Jim Johnson type who make great DC's, but probably wouldn't cut the mustard as a HC.

But I'll take that chance if the alternative is keeping Herm and trying to find a new DC.

I guess we can just place "punt" down on the Buddy Ryan issue

I have already said teh direction I want the club to take, so that will only be rehashing. I will save your time

I agree with Scottie on Ryan he was a good DC not a good HC..Hell Kotite came in and won a playoff Game and went 11-5 1 game better then Buddy did the year before..And we know how good Kotite was..George Seifert won a Bowl his first year as HC many playoff games and never had a record worse then 10-6 and was canned his last year when he went 12-4..Was he a good Coach?? Oh wait crazy Coaches..Mike Ditka was Nuts personified would he still be a good coach?

I always get a kick out of Bit saying how much Henderson owes Hermie for getting a chance after Hermie had him waiting for 3 weeks and everyone else was signed by other Teams..And after just 22 games as a DC he's not ready to be a HC..He came from the Ravens system one of the best D's in the last 25 yrs! He had the Jet D playing top #5 in his first year! Hermie can't even figure how to play a cover 2 nor figure what players you need to run it..Why no critical eye for Hermie? Was he ready to be a HC after being just a scout,DB Coach and BBQ specialist? And who does he owe Loyality to?? Thank you Mr Commissioner!! =D>

The problem with this organization is that their history has been that of sheer misery, ineptitute and incompetence for so long, that merely:

1) Making the playoffs

and/or

2) Winning A Playoff game

is a rousing success. Think about it. What is the first thing the Hermaphrodites spout off in defense of their man - He took us to the playoffs 3 times, he won 2 1st round games. oooh, exciting. By Jets historical standards I guess that's comparible to a Super Bowl Win?

Yes things have been relitive good since 1998 but good, not great. We still have more fingers on one hand then Division Titles and speaking of fingers, there isn't a god damned thing on any of them. While other franchises and fans strive for a Super Bowl, our fan base strives for just having a winning record and making the playoffs. Hell even winning the division takes second place to just 'making the playoffs'.

We've won 2 1st round games under Herm with no appearance in the AFC title game let alone a Super Bowl. Both second round games were disasters. At what point is enough? At what point do you enter a season and say, nothing short of a Super Bowl will do.

Set some goals people. if you're content that just making the playoffs is a rousing success then you're nuts.

Imagine how we would feel if we had Buddy Ryan, who NEVER even won a playoff, then?

But, what do the "Hermaphrodites" know anyway? Blathering idiots we are, since I guess I will include myself in this fictitous grouping.

BTW-Are there any queers here? Get them up against the wall.

Cue GG

Hiring Herm was the way to go. Nothing like being ranked dead last in defense 3 years in a row.

Hermy and his cover who.

Let's break this down very easily.

What makes Buddy Ryan a good coach? Ryan was a great DC. He was an innovator. An inventor. (And I doubt he had to ask his coordinator whether he should take a penalty or not). He was also a miserable bastard who lots of players couldn't stand.

Herm is a nice guy with a great personality. Skill-wise, by contrast he tries to plug schemes that other people invented, and use them with players that don't fit.

Vinny's your QB, tied up long-term? Let's go WCO.

Chad's your QB, tied up long-term? Let's go vertical offense.

3-4 defense & a 3-4 DC? Let's go 4-3/cover-2.

Budding run-blocking/QB-sacking DE? Move him to DT.

Smaller, lightning-fast OLB/DE? Use him only at DE.

Slower run-stuffing NT & old/slow LB's? Let's go cover-2.

Need power-running game? Insert Curtis Martin.

Need fast outside running game? Insert Curtis Martin.

Curtis Martin injured badly? Insert Curtis Martin.
