Curtis notes and other injuries

Curtis Martin's knee injury in Week 2 was serious enough that it should have kept him out for two weeks, Herm Edwards revealed yesterday.

Martin, who sustained what is believed to be a partially torn ligament, has not missed a game since 1998. He came close three weeks ago, when the Jets traveled to Atlanta for a Monday night game. Martin, still bothered by his knee, didn't know for sure that he would be playing until the morning of the game.

"Without the pain threshold he has," Edwards said, "he would've been out of the league two years ago."

Martin, 32, is the same age as Wayne Chrebet, who is expected to retire soon from his ninth reported concussion. Martin admitted he has been knocked unconscious two or three times in his career, including one time recently when he was so woozy that he asked G Brandon Moore to walk him back to the huddle.

But Martin didn't sound like he's in the retiring mood. Unless ...

"If it's something that can cause long-term damage, especially with your mind, that's something you shouldn't play around with," he said.

Edwards said he wouldn't deactivate Martin unless he was "a sitting duck" - and that's not the case, the coach said.

Yesterday, Martin was added to the injury report as probable for Sunday's game in Carolina. He practiced yesterday.

OF COURSE Martin should've sat. And if we had a real coach, he'd be in street clothes. It's a total joke-screw having a young productive back like Houston. Hermie's priority is getting Martin his bullsh!t record.

Cliff Clavin, er, KIngsbury, is the Jets other QB.
