  1. Having addressed their offensive line with the additions of Tyron Smith, John Simpson and Morgan Moses, there’s more speculation than ever that the New York Jets will be adding a pass catcher with the tenth pick in the draft. One name that has been pitched is Georgia tight end Brock Bowers who we profiled here. Another popular choice among Jets fans is Washington wide receiver Rome Odunze. What does Odunze bring? Let’s take a look. Player Name: Rome Odunze Position: Wide Receiver School: Washington Height: 6′ 3” Weight: 212 Hand Size: 9 1/4” Arm Size: 32 1/4” 40-Yard Dash: 4.45 Vertical Jump: 39” Broad Jump: 10′ 4” 3-Cone Drill: 6.88 20-yd Shuttle: 4.03 10-yd split: 1.52 Bench Press: N/A Hometown: Las Vegas, NV High School: Bishop Gorman Class/Age: Junior, 21 Recruit: ★★★★ (Rivals.com) Film Study Games Watched: Michigan State (2023), Arizona (2022), Oregon State (2022), USC (2023), Oregon (2022). @UW_Football WR Rome Odunze has some of the best hands in this year's class and his footwork for a 6' 3'' receiver is very impressive. Agile big man with great hands should be a top 10 pick. pic.twitter.com/ifu2TpFriE — Glenn Naughton (@JetsPicks) March 18, 2024 Route Running: A smooth route runner who exploits open areas against zone coverage. Hands: On film, Odunze’s hands are some of the best we’ve seen in all of college football this year. According to PFF, he dropped just 3 passes all season, giving him a drop rate of just 3.2%. Release: Another area where Odunze stands out. Rare quickness for his size. Separation/Quickness: Given his physical attributes you would expect to see far more separation from Oduzne but he’s often having to make contested catches given to opposing DB’s being able to keep up with him. Ball Skills: Uses his hands, body control and ability to attack the ball to come down with tons of contested catches. Some of the best ball skills in the class. Speed: A sprinter in high school, Oduzne’s 4.45 speaks for itself. Size: Odunze uses every bit of his 6′ 3” frame to beat opposing DB’s for contested catches. Run Blocking: This is probably the biggest concern we noted. Far too often we saw Odunze opting to become a spectator on run plays. Versatility: Odunze played a handful of snaps in the slot but in all likelihood will primarily be boundary receiver. Notes: 2023 All-American 2023 Biletnikoff Award Finalist 2023 All-Pac 12 Summary: Odunze is well on his way to being a top 10 pick. His eye popping 2023 numbers at Washington (92/1,640/13) are off-the-charts. Taking a step back as a pro wouldn’t be a huge surprise as Odunze will be facing defenders who won’t be quite as easy to handle when he can’t get separation. Teams also may not love his lack of willingness to block but he brings enough to the table as a pass catcher that most will look past it. 2. The week ahead is a big one for Jets GM Joe Douglas who has two holes on his roster that need to be filled. Douglas can use an established wide receiver opposite Garrett Wilson and and another edge defender before the NFL draft. He’s hoping to fill those voids with a pair of free agent additions. Firstly, the bigger need of the two is that second pass catcher opposite Garrett Wilson who can be relied upon to beat NFL defenders. With that in mind, the Jets are bringing in former Chargers wide receiver Mike Williams. Former Chargers’ WR Mike Williams is scheduled to visit this week with the Jets, Panthers and Steelers, per source. Jets up first with Williams arriving Monday night. Also, with the Chargers having traded WR Keenan Allen, they also are interested in bringing back Williams. — Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) March 17, 2024 The 6′ 4” Williams played in only 3 games last season due to injury, but in the four years prior, he managed to haul in 279 catches for 4,462 yards and 30 touchdowns. If the Jets could get a fraction of that type of production out of Williams in 2024, it would be a huge victory. On the defensive side of the ball, the Jets let free agent edge rusher Bryce Huff walk in free agency which will allow them to elevate last year’s first-round pick Will McDonald. But in a rotation-heavy system, the Jets will still be in the market for an edge rusher. With Tyron Smith locked in… the Jets have Jadeveon Clowney visiting Mon/Tues. And as @iamSauceGardner mentioned earlier today, a (mystery) WR visiting next week. Close it out Joe Douglas! pic.twitter.com/pYvVJnI4QH — JetNation (@JetNation) March 16, 2024 Aside from Williams coming in this week, Joe Douglas and the Jets will also be meeting with veteran edge rushers Jadeveon Clowney. A bigger and superior player against the run than Huff, Clowney also had 9.5 sacks last season. That number would likely dip with the Jets as he would have fewer reps, but his presence would go a long way in keeping the D-line as one of the tops in the NFL. 3. Addressing their biggest remaining need, the Jets are signing former Dallas Cowboys All-Pro left tackle Tyron Smith. This, according to NFL insider Ian Rapoport. Source: The #Jets are expected to sign former #Cowboys All-Pro and Pro Bowl LT Tyron Smith, a new blindside protector for Aaron Rodgers. pic.twitter.com/VLNEDMzDds — Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) March 16, 2024 The move is a risky one in considering Smith’s injury history. Having missed over 35 games over his past four seasons, Smith joins a team that used 14 different linemen and 11 different combinations up front last season. So while this may not be the last move for the Jets at left tackle this off-season, it is the biggest thus far. 4. Having already signed defensive tackles Javon Kinlaw and Leki Fotu, the Jets have agreed to bring back a familiar face in Solomon Thomas. It’s a 1-year deal for Thomas who has spent each of the past two seasons in green and white. Sources: The #Jets are bringing back one of their own — Solomon Thomas, @SNYtv learned. Rotational defensive lineman and leader in locker room. Has been really solid since rejoining Robert Saleh. #NYJ defensive line room now taking shape — Connor Hughes (@Connor_J_Hughes) March 15, 2024 A rotational depth piece, Thomas has logged 31 tackles and a career high five sacks in 2023. He’ll now be a part of a younger interior as both Al Woods and Quinton Jefferson won’t be returning in 2024. 5. Looking to upgrade their wide receiver room with a bit of “addition by subtraction”, the New York Jets are reportedly trying to move wide receiver Allen Lazard. This, according to Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic. The #Jets have made Allen Lazard available in trade talks this offseason, multiple team and league sources tell me and @DMRussini. Lazard is due a $10 million salary this season. The Jets would save $3.4M (or $10M post-June 1) by trading him. — Zack Rosenblatt (@ZackBlatt) March 14, 2024 Set to make $10 million this season, Lazard would represent a modest cap savings of just over $3 million. But given his atrocious play in 2023, perhaps finding a taker on the trade market would make it worth it. Lazard arrived in New York with high hopes but posted just 23 catches for 311 yards and just a single touchdown. 6. A bit of news from out of left field today in regards to New York Jets wide receiver Corey Davis. Having suddenly stepped away from the game before the start of last season, Davis apparently wants to return but it won’t necessarily be with the Jets. Veteran WR Corey Davis, who stepped away from football in August, has applied for reinstatement to the NFL. The Jets are expected to release Davis from the Reserve/Retired list today, although a return to New York on a new contract is in play. pic.twitter.com/iiEx1abvlw — Field Yates (@FieldYates) March 14, 2024 NFL insider Field Yates says the Jets are expected to release Davis from the retired list but that there’s no guarantee he’ll re-sign with Gang Green. With Allen Lazard under contract, a return could be complicated as the two play similar roles in Nate Hackett’s offense. The simple fact that the Jets are releasing Davis as opposed to activating him may be a strong enough that the receiver won’t be back in Green and White despite the team being desperate for quality bodies at wide receiver. 7. Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers took to twitter today to refute yesterday’s report that he had previously questioned the validity of the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School back in December of 2012. As I’m on the record saying in the past, what happened in Sandy Hook was an absolute tragedy. I am not and have never been of the opinion that the events did not take place. Again, I hope that we learn from this and other tragedies to identify the signs that will allow us to… — Aaron Rodgers (@AaronRodgers12) March 14, 2024 The QB is on record condemning the incident while expressing empathy for the victims and their families. “I hope we learn from this and other tragedies to identify the signs that will allow us to prevent unnecessary loss of life” were Rodgers’ words. However, he did not address the recent rumors linking him to presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy who is said to be eyeing the Jets quarterback as a potential running mate for the 2024 election. 8. If there’s one silver lining to the way the Jets 2023 season played out with players such as Jake Hanson, Xavier Newman and Chris Glaser, it was their live audition. Player who would have otherwise never seen the field got to line up on Sundays and be evaluated by the higher-ups at 1 Jets Drive. It now appears the Jets liked what they saw from Hanson who, in limited action did have some quality moments. The Jets have re-signed G Jake Hanson, the team announced. He was a non-tendered restricted free agent who started four games last season. #Jets — Rich Cimini (@RichCimini) March 14, 2024 We went back after the season to re-watch some of the o-linemen and came away impressed with how Hansen looked against the Browns and Texans. It seems the Jets felt the same way. While building a quality offensive line is clearly a priority after trading for Morgan Moses and signing John Simpson, the Jets know better than anybody how important depth along the line is. The team went through fourteen different linemen and eleven O-line combinations in 2023. Should anything similar occur in 2024, they’ll want to be prepared. 9. The Jets and CJ Mosley have re-worked the linebacker’s contract in a bid to free up some extra salary cap space. The Jets and LB C.J. Mosley have agreed to a two-year, $17.25M deal with $13.25M guaranteed, replacing the final year of his old deal that had no leftover guarantees. The deal includes $9M fully guaranteed in 2024. Mosley has led the Jets in tackles each of the past 3 seasons… — Field Yates (@FieldYates) March 14, 2024 Due to count for over $21 million against the salary cap this season, Mosley’s re-worked deal is $17 million over two seasons. According to overthecap.com, a Mosley re-structure would save the Jets $10.5 million but those numbers aren’t official at this time. With extra cap space created, Jets fans are wondering if there are any moves in the team’s immediate future. One possibility looks to be Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Tyler Boyd who is reportedly being recruited by several Jets players according to Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic. Have heard that some Jets players have been trying to recruit Tyler Boyd. As of a couple days ago Jets weren’t pushing to sign him yet but they have some more cap space now. https://t.co/PfeM4BCULa — Zack Rosenblatt (@ZackBlatt) March 14, 2024 The Jets have made some key moves in recent days such as trading for tackle Morgan Moses and signing guard John Simpson, but they can still use some help at both wide receiver and left tackle. 11. According to Ari Meirov, and confirmed by Thomas Morstead himself, the New York Jets are bringing back punter Thomas Morstead. It is reportedly a two-year deal. It comes off a strong season for Morstead, who was asked to punt 99 times. The 15-year veteran averaged 48.8 yards per punt last season in his second round of duty with the team. Cats out of the bag! https://t.co/2zAkWk0IXw — Thomas Morstead (@thomasmorstead) March 13, 2024 This move signifies the Jets commitment to stability on special teams, as they already brought back Greg Zeurlein. Morstead’s exceptional performance last season made him a fan favorite. With not much to cheer about on offense after the Aaron Rodgers injury, Morstead routinely put on a punting clinic. Stay tuned to JetNation.com for further updates on the Jets’ off-season moves and how they’re shaping up to compete in the highly competitive AFC East. 12. Desperate for help along the offensive line, the New York Jets are welcoming tackle Morgan Moses back to 1 Jets Drive. The trade was reported by NFL insider Mike Garofolo. Morgan Moses: 84.6 PFF Grade since 2020 His 88.4 run-blocking grade during that time ranks 6th among all Tackles pic.twitter.com/6D7WmQIr0t — PFF NY Jets (@PFF_Jets) March 13, 2024 The 33-year-old Moses has had quite the resurgence in Baltimore since leaving the Jets following the conclusion of the 2021 season. To acquire Moses the Jets swapped fourth-round picks in this year’s draft and included their own sixth-rounder. Having already signed left guard John Simpson, the trade for Moses leaves just one hole on the offensive line which is of course left tackle. In a deep class the Jets could be looking at trying to land one of Joe Alt, Olu Fashanu to fill that spot. 13. When it was announced just a couple of days ago that the Jets had signed free agent defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw, the move was met with a lukewarm response. A veteran player for what many likely assumed to be a couple of million dollars. Yes, there are holes to be filled at defensive tackle for the Jets where Quinton Jefferson, Al Woods and Solomon Thomas are free agents. But Kinlaw, an immensely talented underachiever who has spent much of his career battling injuries came with a shocking price tag. Javon Kinlaw’s contract with the #Jets: 1 year $7.25 million $6.91 million guaranteed That’s a much bigger contract than I expected and feels like he’s locked in to be a starter next to Quinnen Williams. Would guess this means Quinton Jefferson is not returning. — Zack Rosenblatt (@ZackBlatt) March 13, 2024 The Jets are reportedly shelling out just over $7 million with $6.9 guaranteed for the former first-round pick. Taken 14th overall in 2020, Kinlaw played a total of just 10 games over the course of the 2021-2022 seasons. In those 10 games, he logged a mere 12 tackles and zero sacks. It’s possible the Jets view Javon Kinlaw as a player who only recently saw “the light come on”. After all, he did manage to pick up 3.5 sacks over the final six contests of 2023. That, after managing just 1.5 sacks in the 3 years prior. But for a cash strapped team such as the Jets, that’s a huge chunk of their remaining cap space to spend on an oft-injured player with such little production. Go figure. 15. While fans eagerly await for more news of the Jets beefing up their offensive line, Gang Green is adding another body to their defensive front. This, according to Connor Hughes of SNY who says the Jets are signing defensive tackle Leki Fotu. A veteran of four NFL seasons, the 335 pound Fotu has appeared in 56 games (21 starts) and will likely replace Al Woods up front. A former Utah Ute, the big space eater was a fourth round pick (114th overall) in the 2020 draft. Since entering the league he has logged 89 tackles (42 solo) and 3.5 sacks. Fotu joins Javon Kinlaw in the trenches as the latest additions to putting together a stout defensive front.
