With age, and just a little experience riding around on this planet, most of us begin to see examples of the lottery that is human reproduction. The odds of something going wrong are 1 in a hundred, but there are 100 things that can go wrong. So you just never know. Until it's a member of your family. Your perfectly normal kid brother or sister, with whom all your earliest memories are tied, starts to get ...different. You ache for that person to do better; to have a normal life they deserve. But it doesn't happen, and they don't receive it. This planet loves to sh*t on some of us like that. So you do all you really can do; remind them you love them and you cheer like hell when they win a competition of any kind. You're not cheering because they're great at it, or even good at it...you're cheering because there isn't a person on this f**cking earth who deserves to smile more than they do.

Last week we saw "Age of Ultron". Spoiler alert: It's really just "Hour or so of Ultron". 30min of creativeness, then repetition. I woke up every 20 minutes and saw the same fight and trumpet music.

Spoiler alert: Weiners, F-bomb, weiners, F-bomb, bong hit with James. The end.

I'm Jerry. My hobbies are varied. For the last year I've been resurrecting a scanning electron microscope I found at the university (MSU) surplus sale. I finally have software, thanks to some generous people in europe. I've tested all systems except vacuum and xray. My roughing pump (Edwards e2m1) is getting ordered Jan1, and should pull the 10E-3 Torr required by my turbomolecular pump -- which will take it down to 10E-5. Fwiw, the vacuum of space is 10E-6 and lower, depending on where you are. I'm still trying to come up with a 'remote' plan to test the xray system, since it runs about 20,000volts. The tank on the top right is the Liquid Nitrogen (ln2) tank for the optional spectroscopy module. If it works, it will tell me the top 5 or so elements withn the sample. Not sure if it will detect isotopes (carbon 12 v carbon 14 for example).

I'm listening to a great U2 tribute band on Palladia right now. They call themselves 'coldplay'.

I watched Planet of the Apes at the theater last night. The picture's aspect ratio was 4:3...literally a square like an old tv. Not 16:9 or wider like you'd typically see. Is my theater out of whack or did they really really film it in 4:3?

The movie 'Frozen' is a tale of 2 girls who grow up apart. They sing through their challenges. They lose control of their beautiful castle and one of them will die unless she receives 'true love's kiss'. I didn't know any of this going in. My 3 sons are pissed.

Just saw Gravity in Imax 3d with my son. Worth every penny. Don't skimp, see it in 3d on the biggest screen available.

Question re: 'This is the End'. It has good reviews, but I'm concerned it's all sperm jokes. I like comedy to work harder than that. I'm no prude, I liked Pineapple Express & Paul, I just think weiner jokes are too easy to spend my $ on.
