Geno Smith, Can he run a Versatile Offense?

08 May 2013 - 03:55 PM

By this I mean can he run the type of Offense Seattle, Washington, SF, and Carolina employ?  All 4 are different, but similar in 1 way, they build in read options Pass, and Run because of the special talents their QB's posses with their legs, arm, and knowledge of this system, yes all 3 of these traits, unlike others who have 1, or 2, but not all 3.

Can Geno Smith run a west coast offense with the read option built in succesfully, does anyone think he has the 3 tools I mentioned to pull this off?  Does anyone think the Jets are planning to try, and utilize him in this fashion?  If the answers to these questions are yes, does anyone think Rex Ryan can keep his mouth shut about it, and let the league be caught by surprise instead of telling them what our plans are?

I see Geno ran a 4.58 40 at the combine, this is comparable to R Wilson's 40, and A Luck's 40, but A Luck can't run this type of offense, nor does he need to, or should be asked to, but R Wilson can particularly because he has run it, and has other athletic traites besides straight line speed that Luck does not posses.

Geno wasn't asked to run with the football at WVU, and why would you when you have the horses at the other skill positions to carry the ball like T Austin, and Company over the 3 years that Geno started at WVU.

So thoughts, comments, bashing, name calling, and my favorite, Trolling are all welcome in response, look forward to some of the opinions on this topic!

Perfect Jets Draft Scenario

25 April 2013 - 12:09 AM

T Austin is available at #9, St Louis is desperate to get a weapon at WR for Bradford, and Minnesota is desperate to replace P Harvin, you get these 2 into a bidding war, and hopefully St Louis panics, and gives us 16, and 22 to get him. Pick 13, we put out smoke screens about loving C Patterson, and we are fielding a bunch of calls from Hou, among others who want to make sure they get the 2nd best WR in the draft, get then to cough up 23, and 25 for 13.

16. J Jones OLB Georgia
22, E Reid S LSU
23. Houston CB, forget his name
25. Get Houston to Leap GB to make sure they get J Hunter, for picks 27, and 60, GB lost G Jennings so they need a replacement.
27. Eiffert TE
39. Best Available WR
60. G Bernard RB NC, or insert your favorite 2nd RD RB.
72. M Glennon/Miami of Ohio Kid, or whomever they believe Is the best QB prospect available.
105. T Mathiue the honey badger, adding the Houston CB, Reid at S, and Mathieu will make it much easier for Rex to adjust minus Revis.

To bad they are to stupid to pull this off

Laron Landry

I know the Jets are strapped Cap wise, and Landry want's to get paid, but I think the Jets will, and need to get him locked up, and if it is true that Rex is pretty much calling the shots I would say it is a good bet the Jets get it done.

I know Tanny is gone, and the new GM might not want to continue to conduct business the same way contract wise, but the Jets could give him a smaller version of the Santonio Holmes Contract.   Give him a 4 year injury protected incentive laden deal, all incentives are Injury related, no performance related incentives needed with Landry, if healthy he gives you everything he has got, and more sometimes to the chigrin of some coaches.  Figure a 2013 base salary of like 1,000,000 with a prorated bonus of  4 million paid up front, but spread out over the 4 years cap wise, contract would be total of 4 years 25 million, 11.66 million guaranteed.  1st year a cap hit of only 2 million, 2014, cap hit of 7.66, 2015 non guaranteed cap hit of 7.66, and only 2 million dead cap hit if cut/traded/released, and 2016 cap hit of 7.68 million, and only a dead cap hit of 1 million if released.

He is guaranteed 2 years at roughly 12 million in this scenario all paid with in the 1st 2 seasons, and will be able to make another 13 million if he doesn't get hurt in years 3, and 4.  I think this is a fair going rate for what Laron Landry is a top 10 SS, who if needed can play FS.  Eric Weddle was regarded by far to be the best young Safety prior to the 2011/2012 season, and got 8 million per year, with 19 million guaranteed in comparison with NO injury history, or concerns.

Am I off base on these numbers?  And only taking a 2 million 2013 cap hit even thou he is making 5 million in year 1 is very doable from the Jets financially.  Or do some think he is going to try in hit the Eric Weddle HR, and ask for 5 years 40 million 20 million guaranteed, AND get someone to bite, I know he will at first obviously try to hit the HR, but in all reality he is still a big injury risk, and can't see anyone going higher than the numbers I posted above, and he will get somewhere in this neighberhood of what I posted above IMO.

Opinions?  Maybe Jason could shed more light on if my above math is correct also in terms of cap hits, and what not.

Player, face of the organization?

09 January 2013 - 01:34 PM

Ok so if the Jets part ways, or just let Sanchez hold a clip board, and Revis says he is going to play out his current contract, and test the market in 2014, and also the Jets win 5-7 games next year so no Clowney, Bridgewater, or Manziel either, my question is WHO from a player stand point would be the Jets so called Face of the Organization?  Hell even Bobby Valentine had Mike Piazza, does Rex want to be the only name people think of when they say the words New York Jets, like I said persons name, obviously Circus, Clowns, Joke, ect... come to mind when those words are spoken from the media, and outside world (even inside to), but from a strictly players name perspective August 2014 who would that player be?

Chip Kelly

Anyone think he would make a good HC?

Also anyone think B Beli, and NE have copied his offensive strategy?  Not per say play design, but strategy that the more plays you run the more points you score, the more points you score the more games you win.  I do think they have, and it seems to work, obviously you need the proper personal to run this which NE has they can lineup in a smashmouth G&P set 1 play, and a 4 wide speed spread the next without making a substitution because of Gronk, and Hernandez.

I think this might be one of the next copied strategies in this copy cat league, but most will find it hard to be successful without the proper personal, and unlike college the need to have an elite QB direct the plays, the fake snap look to the sideline cards BS won't work, the QB would have to be trusted to essentially be the O-Coordinator like a Brady, or Manning can do.
