    KRL Camp Notes (7/31/17)

General Notes - First full pad practice - Practice ran 2 hours and 45 minutes - Practice was open to the public for the first time. Attendance seemed down but only slightly - The media attendance picked up I guess because Roger Goodell was at the facility - Penalty laps from the Mangini era returns when offensive players mess up Player Notes - Ardarius Stewart and Chad Hansen returned fully to practice. First impressions, Stewart early on was "double catching" balls until things started to slow down for him. Hansen was being instructed by John Morton to not push off on comeback routes. He needed to be more subtle when "disposing" of the CB's - The players auditioning for the return jobs are Lucky Whitehead, Romar Morris (RB), Marcus Murphy (RB) and Frankie Hammond (WR) - With the pads coming on there were 1 on 1 blocking drills: * Darron Lee showed much stronger hands as he rocked back Bilal Powell * Austin Seferian-Jenkins, Jordan Leggett and Eric Tomlinson were better than I expected. Instead of just getting in the way they actually were physical and moved people - In 9 on 7 running drills the run defense was stout. Credit to Deon Simon and the ILB's (Lee & Demario Davis) for shutting down the middle - Morris Claiborne returned and continued to impress. It's shocking to say based on their careers but he's going to be a huge upgrade over Revis if he stays on the field - Sheldon Richardson continued to impress with TFL's in the running game. Steve McLendon also had multiple TFL's as he blew up running plays - Elijah McGuire flashed today with a couple of tough inside runs and a 40+ yard TD off an inside screen pass from Josh McCown - Concerning the kicking battle both Ross Martin & Chandler Catanzaro were perfect in their attempts. But I'm leaning toward Martin winning the battle because it appears he's improved his leg strength. He's been hitting 50+ yarders easily and on bad snaps he was still able to adjust and make the kicks QB's - Josh McCown and Bryce Petty were both alright, nothing spectacular but no turnovers. On one occasion it appeared that Petty was held on the sideline to allow Christian Hackenberg to stay on the field - Hackenberg "stacked" another practice as he continued to progress. Areas of improvement today included: 1. On QB rollouts he was able to maintain accuracy even when his feet weren't stationary 2. Throwing with anticipation to spots before receivers were there 3. Throwing through tight windows in the middle of the field He got scolded and yanked from one rep by Bowles/Morton when he didn't get out of the huddle quick enough Padded Plays Of The Day - Wesley Johnson and Anthony Firkser (FB) "combo pancake" blocked McLendon on a long run up the middle - Doug Middleton (S) "clothes-lined" Jordan Todman (RB) with one arm for a TFL Standouts - Run defense

    Random Thoughts Before Practice

    - Considering the #2 QB gets the majority of reps in the first two pre-season games, it makes sense for Hackenberg to stay in that spot for now. His early improvements need to be seen with "live bullets" flying before he should move up - Surprising that some of Petty's reps were given to Hackenberg after only two practices - After hearing Bowles presser yesterday it seems they are installing the offense from scratch. So it makes sense that we haven't seen "vertical" elements yet. So whether the offense can keep the opponents from stacking the box will remain

    KRL Camp Notes (8/1/17)

General Notes - Players in full pads - Practice runs 2 hours 40 minutes - Matt Forte sits out with his leg injury but Robby Anderson practices fully - In the special teams period coaches squib kicked to the "big boys" (OLine & DLine) to simulate recovering an onside kick - The offense started to install formation shifts & motions - John Morton (OC) is very detailed oriented and demanding. If you're not lined up exactly or if a receiver's feet are in the wrong position as they take their position he'll go "volcano". Also if you don't finish the play sprinting you'll get called out - Dennard Wilson (DB coach) also wasn't a very happy man today. He was all over his unit during team periods when they couldn't get off the field in "3rd down situations" Player Notes - Jamal Adams and Marcus Maye started to "flash" today. In 1 on 1 drills Adams showed CB coverage skills as he defended RB's & WR's and in a team period he got a "sack" on a blitz. Maye in 1 on 1 drills showed excellent closing speed to the sideline as he picked off a Christian Hackenberg pass to Jalin Marshall(?). And in a team period he "blasted" Jordan Leggett on a short sideline reception again showing closing speed - Robby Anderson finally beat Morris Claiborne off the line and beat him on a 30+ yard slant during team period. It deserves a mention because Claiborne was abusing him earlier in camp - With Forte out, Bilal Powell and Elijah McGuire flashed at the RB position. Powell had a nice inside / out run where he got skinny up the middle then bounced out for 15+ yards. And McGuire has surprised me with his willingness to run up the middle and not to bounce everything outside - After watching Demario Davis his first time around with the Jets I wasn't impressed. I thought he was pedestrian at best, but I'll give him credit for his play so far. He's been extremely physical, today he blew up Julian Howsare (FB) on a running play that you could hear on the sidelines. Maybe he'll be better this time around - A couple of lesser known players had some "splash" plays today. Chris Harper (WR) had two circus catches, a 30+ yard one handed catch and a 20+ yard leaping sideline catch both from Bryce Petty. Corey Lemonier (OLB) had a "sack" of Petty in team periods and during his reps showed good closing speed coming off the edge QB's The offense was more run oriented today so there wasn't a ton of action - Josh McCown was probably the most effective QB. A game manager type of practice with no INT's - Bryce Petty also had no INT's and Harper made him look good with those circus catches. But I think he's the #3 QB at best and his reduction in reps reflects that - Christian Hackenberg for the first time didn't progress, he threw an INT to Maye during the 1 on 1 period. He also threw an INT to Dexter McDougle (a deflection as he tried to throw between two DB's). In his final team period reps he ended on a good note with two nice throws one to Quincy Enunwa and one to Austin Seferian-Jenkins. Now that he's hit a bump in the road let's see how he recovers on Thursday Standouts - Chris Harper - Jamal Adams - Marcus Maye Concerns - The blood pressure of John Morton & Dennard Wilson

    Random Thoughts Before Practice

Hackenberg is exactly where I hoped he would be when I was cheering the day the Jets drafted him . It's funny, but I have had the same plan for developing a young QB since I started watching Cutler in college at Vandy . I wanted a young QB who could spend the whole 1st year sitting behind a veteran, then spend his 2nd year challenging that Veteran for the starting Job . Back then, I wanted the Jets to draft Jay Cutler and have him sit behind Chad Pennington who was coming back from yet another arm injury . From his freshman year, I have kept an eye on Hackenberg, and despite the miserable numbers, I wanted that kid on the Jets . I never in a million years would have figured the Jets coaching staff would do what I wanted with Hackenberg . I further have to admit that once the reports started circulating about how bad Hackenberg was looking I was worried, but I was still willing to see it through. Now I read these reports and I am excited about what might be but I have to temper that excitement. Hackenberg is exactly what I was looking for , and the Jets coaching staff has done exactly what I was hoping they would do . The rest is up to Hackenberg and hopefully, the Jets will have the QB I have long been looking for . Let's slow walk this thing so we can try and achieve the best possible result for our Jets .

What's going to be interesting is when / if Hackenberg has a bad practice how will he react the next time he takes the field? Does he shrug it off and continues to progress or does he go in the tank? When evaluating a young QB you need to see if he can handle adversity
  13. 7 points
That is just an amazing POV. Not surprising, but amazing nonetheless. The Jets could field the Bears' 1985 defense but no one would be able to tell if the offense can't stay on the field for more than three plays per drive. The 2015 season was a fluke of easy schedule, those easy opponents being further damaged via injury, and Marshall and Decker both being healthy and bailing their erratic QB out of bad throws consistently. You're never going to see another season like that. Let's not pretend that's some kind of formula. This is a team 100% in full rebuild mode. McCown is a placeholder. The sooner he's out of the starting conversation, the better for the future of this franchise.

One of the most fascinating aspects of JN mafia is how the players call one another names, badger one another and declare themselves better than everyone else... Then sit back in shock and surprised they can't get anything done because nobody wants to cooperate with them. LOL

Reminds me of what he said leading up to the draft: Christian Hackenberg says he's 'battle tested' after Penn State career Of his past two seasons, Hackenberg remains positive. "I was put through a lot of adversity I'd never faced before in my career," he said. "Throwing a bunch of interceptions, taking a bunch of sacks, getting beat up. So, being able to do that and stay on the field, never miss a start, and be a good leader? That was a huge learning experience for me." "A lot of guys that go through their college career where everything's great and they win, and they never really get punched in the mouth," he said. "Having been hit in the mouth multiple times, gotten back up, and continued to fight through is something I'll always take a lot of pride in." http://www.espn.com/nfl/draft2016/story/_/id/15416924/nfl-draft-2016-qb-christian-hackenberg-says-battle-tested-college-career-penn-state-nittany-lions

I'm shocked the talented defense in it's 3rd year running the same system is ahead of the JV offense with a first time ever OC installing a new system. The 2 best units on this team are the d-line and secondary, the 2 worst the WRs and o-line. It's a brutal mismatch. Every summer the defense is ahead of the offense the first week, yet we go the same crap every summer where every practice means someone should get cut or fired or is going to the probowl. With the new CBA even the 3rd ps game is just a fancy scrimmage now. You don't know what a team is until week 4 now. C'mon guys

I think this is a direct result of what's been happening in the classroom, who's more aware of what's happening in the playbook, understanding defensive looks etc. In addition, maybe because they feel Petty is what he was drafted to be, a backup, and they want the starter battle between the vet and the guy they think can be a starter.

    The Ghost of Revis Past?

HE's a 4x All Pro, 7x Pro Bowler with a Ring probably going to Canton. When he does get his bust, what uniform does he wear? Jets fans shouldn't hate Revis cause he likes money or got old. He was an all time great at the position and the Jets screwed it up. We all saw it happen on Hard Knocks. As for Claiborne I understand his desire to wear his number but how about you stay on the field for a few games buddy? If he makes it through the season and proves it, maybe next year he gets the number if he still wants it.

The Ape and I are the uncontested best scum hunters here at JN. There is no argument about this. It's pure fact. I enjoy when we're town together and we just decimate the scum team. It's fun because we get to live up to our hype and when you fulfill the hype, it a sensation similar to a feeling that 80 has never experienced and you have to pay for.

Hack and Petty are better than McCown and Petty is hindered from showing it by being with the 3rd stringers and also getting limited reps!!!!

I was for Hack being drafted and stated so before the draft. It is also why the over the top criticism of Hack last year was unwarranted. We all have to sit back and hope that Mac and Bowles got it right with this guy, time will tell.

Answers to questions: - About the OLine, I would say that the "sacks" they've given up came when the WR's couldn't get open the first two days and when the defense came with their blitz package. Other than that they've won some and lost some against the DLine. I'll try to focus on individual players the next two practices but when Hackeberg is back there I lock on him, sorry - What I can tell about Hackenberg when he's on the field is that he's the one pointing out alignment / formation mistakes when players aren't lined up

I love the fact that Hack is "stacking" practices together, best news a Jets fan can hear. The next step Hack IMO needs to take is to be in that huddle leading, commanding, and getting positive responses from the other 10 guys in that huddle, IF he can continue his physical progress he seems to have made, AND become a fierce field general to those other 10 guys on offense that will look into his eyes, and see someone they are willing to go follow then the Jets have something, that is just as if not more important then the physical aspect, but if you can get both you usually have your franchise QB. Have you been able to tell if he is showing any signs leading the guys out of the huddle with positive responses from the players at all?
