  3. ...and that is the primary reason the NFL is having ratings and attendance problems. It's stupid to emphasize a high powered passing game when there are so few decent quarterbacks. Talk about playing to a weakness... SAR I

  4. my favorite Aesop's fable is the one about the bulldog carrying a giant bone all over town, showing it off. That is, until this bulldog was crossing a bridge, looked down into the water, saw his reflection, and mistook it for a dog with a bigger bone. The dog barks and the bone falls out of his mouth, splashing into the water and ruining the reflection, and then the dog had no bone. The problem with the NFL, MLB, and ESPN is that they took their loyal, established customer base (older suburban dudes) for granted and went hard after demos that were probably never going to buy into the product in the first place: Goodell decided to go hard after the European market, as well as the 19-34 female demo. ESPN went hard after millenials and urban communities. The MLB decided it was an international game. In so doing, they each scheduled games at all hours of the night, every day of the week, and saturated the living sh*t out of the market. Thursday Night Football is so bad and the teams are so unprepared that it serves only as a horrid preview for a movie that no one will end up seeing (think: Justice League). They also tailored the attendant commentary and analysis to speak to non-sports fans too disinterested to understand the sport in the first place, which dumbed it down to such a degree that Terry Bradshaw and Deion Sanders currently maintain employment. They raised ticket prices, concession prices, tacked on PSL fees, and started charging $50 for parking spots a full mile from the front gates of their stadiums. So not only did these leagues and broadcasters stop marketing to the loyal, gainfully employed, invested sports fan, they also priced them out and mocked them on the way out the door. And, guess what, the suburban dude demo is the only one with disposable incomes. I don't feel bad for any of these leagues. I think, within 20 years, we'll see contraction in MLB. I think at least five more NFL teams will move out of their current cities. I think WFAN will only be available on Sirius at some point. And I think ESPN will adopt a format similar to MTV, where they show nothing but reality-type programming and 30 for 30s. As an aside, the only league that seems to understand what it is, and what it's selling is the NBA.

  5. There are only 5 NFL teams with good quarterbacks. No one else has a chance to win. I myself and bored with the NFL and I'm as diehard as they come. Because the NFL changed the rules and made it such a QB-friendly league the deck is stacked against teams without one. SAR I

  7. If there is truth to this, just to avoid the JETS. Then both of these kids are some bitches that I don't want playing for this team either. I want the QB that is looking forward to coming into a team and accepts the challenge of being the "reason" for a team's turn around. I hate how kids now days are such sissy a$$ babies. News flash if your a high draft pick your not going to a good team 9 of 10 times. Hope this is just BS. It probably is.

  8. this is pure stupidity. if you are projected to go in the top 5 in the nfl draft you are obviously going to go to a team who wasn't that good. it would be pure stupidity to risk injury at college when you are projected to go that high and give up that kind of money. especially when they have no way of knowing what sh*tty team will get them the following year.

  13. Well let's review the other likely choices. Buffalo, Cleveland, Indianapolis, Chicago. So suddenly those are more attractive places to live than the Metro NY area for someone coming from southern Cal? Or could it be that Schefter saw a chance to single out the Jets for the cheap reaction? I wouldn't worry about it much. Manning 'avoided' the Jets and got sent to Indy for the next 15 years. Then you have his brother, who shunned SD to come to the Giants. That's actually a bigger concern. One of these kids could come out, and then threaten to sit out the year if they don't get to go where they want in an attempt to force a trade. Interestingly enough, the Chargers could be an attractive spot for both those kids now that they are in LA.

  18. Disagree there. The NHL is just the right size to stay profitable, they have a very loyal audience that sticks, they only need to sell 16,000 seats to have a full arena, and it's a very fast game with no breaks in the action. Most important of all, the players are incredibly loyal to their teams, their fans, and they play with an unselfish passion. You ask me, that's what's missing from the NFL. Amongst all it's problems with pacing, commercials, QB depth, etc. etc., it's the nonchalant demeanor of the NFL's spoiled, selfish players that ultimately causes the most grief. You can just tell that the players hate their ownership, only care about their money, don't give a crap about winning a championship. SAR I

  21. Yes. And beyond the lack of quarterbacks: Coaches are playing the game to kill the clock and shorten the action. Clock rules are designed to maximize commercials and shorten the action. It's gotten to the point where you get like 4 drives per quarter, by the time you look up it's the fourth quarter, you've barely seen any gameplay, if you're lucky you've seen one exciting big play, and you've been forced to watch a million commercials. And then there are 4 minutes left and things are the way they should be- exciting. The NFL has allowed itself to become the NBA. 55 minutes of wasted time, 5 minutes of action. SAR I

  26. If UCLA decided to play defense just once before the end of the 4th quarter, it would have been a win. Hard to not like a guy who throws for 4 TD and runs for one while constantly under pressure and constantly trying to catch up. Yeah, the picks were bad, but I'd sign for this kid right now. Not sure I wouldn't take him over Darnold anyway. Still a ways to go, but I'm really enjoying watching UCLA and it's all because of the offense.

  30. Lest anyone aside from Smash (dgaf what he thinks) thinks I am being a dick or I somehow turned on him let's go over exactly what happened. D2 starts halfway down Page 34, 80 votes me after having been on my case for awhile and then Smash votes me without any stated reason. I respond to that vote by saying the following. No it wasn't nice but my point still stands that it's ******* bullsh*t Smash can just check out for days at a time and then drop a vote with no explanation and expect it to fly without comment. Maybe everyone else was just tired of his sh*t by then but I am going to point it out because it's bullsh*t. Even if he's town it's ******* worthless gameplay from him. Ok moving on. We trade some jabs but I'm pulled off to arguing with Dice while Smash is mainly arguing with Jif/80/Ape. Now I'm not going to pretend I was nice. I wasn't. But Neither was Smash so who ******* cares? With posts like the following it's no wonder people blow up at him. Now don't get me wrong. Unlike Smash I am almost never bothered by being called names or insulted (I have my moments but they are rare). I literally come to JN because I can call Smash an idiot and he can call me ****face or Nolderp or Pokenerd or whateverthe**** and we're not going to get banned for it because USUALLY it's in good fun or at least just heat of the moment type of sh*t talking. Point is Smash is trying to make the case that I can dish it out but I can't take it but what I am saying is that I can take it just fine that's not what made me mad initially nor is it why I'm ******* done with Smash right now. Ok moving on again. Pretty much out of nowhere on Page 36 Smash votes himself. Pac replies and appears to genuinely be trying to console Smash saying why let Ape et al have power over you? Smash denies they have power over him but continues with the emo sh*t. I come in and try to indulge his point of view. NOTE: AT THIS POINT I'VE LET MY ANGER OVER SMASHES DUMB VOTE GO. My only purpose at this point was to get Smash to feel better and continue playing. Here is what I first said to him. Jif and 80 and Ape continue to harang Smash at the time. Smash doesn't even respond to the post I made above so I said "Well Smash doesn't even want to talk to me I guess." And if that were true I figured we might as well figure out what to do and just move on with the game so I follow up with a post asking Smash if he's sure this (meaning getting himself lynched) is what he really wanted to do. I tried to convince him to drop it and just help me lynch AJ. While waiting for there to be a lynch or for Smash to respond a few posts are made and one of them 80 calls Smash a blockhead baby or something and my response? Why did I say that? I was clearly trying to get in the middle. I said it because I didn't want to agree with 80 and make Smash feel worse. I'm over here taking his ******* feelings into consideration in a game where I shouldn't have to be ******* doing that in the first place. Another example of me wanting to work things out with Smash FINALLY Smash shows up again. He claims to be the Doc and then makes this huge emo rant post. He's since deleted it but you can see my response to it and most if not all of it quoted in my response near the top of page 38. READ MY POST. Let me post a few choice quotes from that post lest you think I was being a dick to Smash. I mean I'm not exactly sucking his dick in the post (I think I called him an idiot at one point) but I don't know what this is if it's not supposed to be encouraging. I'm treating him with ******* kid gloves trying to get him to come back and finish playing instead of taking his ball and going home. After I make this big long post literally putting my gameplay on pause and trying to help this dude against even what I consider the spirit of the game and what does he say to me? Oh...ok...cool thanks. I mean that's it? Not yeah thanks for trying Nolder but I'm just not feeling it or yeah but blahblahblah. Nah he just continues the emo and deletes his rant. And what's my reply? I think at this point I could have gotten frustrated or mad with him but what did I do? I was ******* nice as **** again. And Smash responds by saying "not worth it Nolder". Well **** me right? I'm over here doing everything I can to make this dude feel better and he's just like nah leave me alone. At that point most people WOULD just leave him alone. But hey I've had my emo rants I've been there and the times that certain people reached out I really appreciated it so I went on trying to be nice and helpful. I straight up just say hey ok if you don't want to talk that's fine but literally I'll just let you quit the game if that's what you really want or if you want you can get a free pass for this emo sh*t. HONESTLY? This right here is way against the spirit of the game and I wouldn't blame anyone if they gave me sh*t for it later. It's ****ed up because I'm over here willing to let Smash go and it had not a god damn thing to do with the game. And how does he respond? He goes straight into game mode. He also piles on more emo regarding something 80 said or whatever. Go back and check the quotes. So instead of getting frustrated I'm like ok maybe he's feeling like he's taking crazy pills about Ape's PR even though I didn't want to let on that I knew it was fake yet I'll tell Smash I already knew so maybe he'll calm the **** down. Not only that but I threw a random jab at Pac just to make Smash feel better. Like he's not isolated and being picked on by everyone. So Smash replies by saying something like well if you knew Ape was faking why didn't you try to lynch him. And I respond by saying that I don't necessarily know that it's scummy but I can basically revisit it any time I want to. My main message was I'm watching and waiting on Ape. But that wasn't good enough for Smash. He responds saying. Now. Look back in this post or better yet go read the actual posts in context. I called Smash an idiot many posts ago and it was in a half joking manner AND I'd spent several posts after that still trying to make him feel better. I never really commented on his Doc claim beyond saying I don't think Docs should lurk. So wtf is this? More emo? Like holy **** dude how much can I say or do for the guy? It was at this point I finally got frustrated. On page 39 I replied. Now while I was making this post which he never responded to Smash was having gameplay talk with others so I'm thinking ok cool he's slowly being dragged back into the game he's going to play so I can stop trying to make him feel better because maybe that's just making him dwell on whatever pissed him off. So I make a gameplay post again FINALLY. Just so we're clear, this is the post I was quoting from Smash. Now if you read this post Smash literally just said the Doc will self protect the first few phases of the game. I responded by saying ok you're implying you self protected both nights so why did scum try to kill you N2 if they knew they'd already been blocked N1? I think that's a pretty normal thing to ask. Obviously he wouldn't know the answer if he's really the doc no one can say what scum would do unless they are on the team but I figured it was worth asking just to see what he would say. And boy what a ******* response I got. The dude ******* blows the **** up at me. Me. The one guy who's being ******* nice beyond ******* reason while everyone else continued to pick and snipe at him. And he's ******* confused now about why I'm done with him. I could have responded then and been a dick but I tried to just let him down easy. Because, you know, even though I was mad at how he just blew up at me I was still trying to protect the mother****ers feelings for some reason. Here is how I responded. I think that is a pretty reasoned and measured response for how I was treated. That'll teach me to ******* be nice and try to help someone DURING a game. Mother****er is probably scum throwing an a fake emo fit. If that's the case well BRAVO SIR! You survived being lynched and got more townies killed. It's a low and disgusting play but hey do what you gotta do to win right? I'll tell you this I will not be making this mistake with you ever again. Your emo falls on deaf ears. And if you're town well I hope you feel like sh*t for how you treated someone trying to help you. Yeah, I think you deserve to feel bad for that one. Everyone else, judge how you will. I am done responding to Smash for the rest of the game. Regardless of his alignment I am disgusted with him.

On any snap these QB's can break a bone or suffer a permanent injury. 34. Wow. This was without question the most nonsensical article I've read on any topic all year. No proof, no smoking gun, no statement by the athletes...just the argument that Florham Park...which is beautiful by the way and hosts one of the best athletic facilities in the entire league, isn't California? Or is it because the Jets are a bad team? Because I'm pretty sure the best players go to the teams with the worst records on draft day. So WTF is that argument. This article should be titled: One easy trick to lose a QB! Or What QB's don't want you to know! Or, seven reasons Doctors hate Darnold... number five will shock you!

  37. Number 4. It is essential to be bad for a few years to acquire top talent. You draft a qb and spend free agent money on the oline to protect him. Let him learn on the job and finish 3-13. Then take the best reciever at the top of the draft and take the best rb at the top of round 2. Now you have some weapons for him. Now finish 6-10 in his second year. Tske the top tight end in the draft. Now year 3, you are ready to compete. The worst thing to do is get an Alex Smith type guy and finish with 8 wins. We need blue chip talent at the offensive skill positions and that comes with picking at the top of the draft.

  38. In the ten seasons that spanned between 1980-1989, only 5 teams won championships (4 from the NFC), and the majority of those games were atrocious 1 sided affairs. The league can withstand this, but the difference is the level of play was much better and the game way more physical. The fact is the game was just better back in the day.

  40. You're right, the gate means very little. It's all about the TV revenue. Most of what my family watches on TV these days are binged Netflix series, an occasional HBO or Showtime series, and only one or two shows of any decent quality on the major networks. Modern Family, This Is Us, I can't think of many more. If it weren't for the NFL, we'd have little use for CBS, NBC, FOX, or ABC. There is more than enough content on Netflix, Amazon Prime, and YouTube to keep us entertained for the whopping 3 hours a night we actually are watching TV, usually the Rangers or Yankees. SAR I

  41. I think this is true. I know there are other NFL teams in the same boat, but it seems like there are alot of guys injured on this team. I remember when Bill Parcells took over the Jets and, at his opening press conference, put out the three-ring binders of all the injury reports. The Jets got tougher and healthier in a hurry. Over the last 5+ years one of the dirty little secrets of college football has been Jim Mora's program at UCLA. They are producing a number of NFL ready/quality players. We will meet one this Sunday-the DT Vander-something., a third round pick. UCLA had a reputation of producing players whose bodies were not pro ready. 42. The league is much much more political than it's ever been. Not even close. The byproduct of making it a high-scoring league is that it becomes quarterback driven and takes other elements out like the running game. So if your team doesn't have a good quarterback, it takes a a lot of interest out of it. The NFL may have done their studies but obviously it's not working since they are losing attendance and viewers. Just look at the 49ers attendance on opening day as an example of what happens when you don't have a good quarterback in today's League. Fans have no interest or hope. Me being on a football message board has nothing to do with whether or not I'm going to attend a game or watch a game. I used to watch all the Sunday Monday and Thursday games that were televised. I now pretty much only watch Jets games and I didn't watch the opener. And that is because of any of the reasons I've already stated, and a direct correlation to the loss of ratings and attendance the NFL is complaining about. Yes the NFL is concerned about player safety, but in my opinion they go way overboard. They are taking out too much of the toughness which is an integeral part of the game. How many times have you seen a defensive back penalized on a good hit when the helmet never touches the wide receiver, or when there's incidental contact? They can fix this issue by making it a penalty only when there's an attempt to lead with a helmet.
