He's a raw player, in his his first year, and he's playing in a bad scheme. Also, Shepard checked all the right boxes as a lineman looking to make the jump into the NFL based off of measurables, combine numbers, etc. He may not make it, but this thread is extremely premature.

Chad Forbes‏ @NFLDraftBites #Jets Whether GM Mike Maccagnan is kept or not irrelevant. New Coach will have keys to Franchise. Patient Ownership that provides resources. Franchise QB, $100M+ in Cap Room & Division that’ll transition away from Patriots dominance in next few Yrs.

What? Not possible. The Johnson's are evil.. We have no talent. Macc is a fool. Our best player on defense is a box safety. Robby Anderson is a thug.

Useless player. Suppose to be a blocker and absolutely sucked at his one job. Had like 3 catches all year from what I can remember. Dont know why Walford even got cut. I liked Herndon/Leggett/Walford more than Tomlinson or Neal Sterling.

All Jets fans should be sorry to see this happen.

That’s a Bowles issue Last year, Johnson graded as one of the best press corners in the league and was mediocre when playing off. So what does Bowles have him do? Constantly play 10+ yards off the LoS, of course.

I wish Tomlinson well as he looks for a new team for next year.

Agree, but I'm not even sure the Browns will be completely in on the coaching market. They've done extremely well with Gregg Williams at HC and Kitchens at OC so I see no reason why they shouldn't retain them at their positions.

Sione Pouha was 25 coming out of Utah, contributed little at least the first few years. Then a change in coaching and the opportunity to emerge from Kris Jenkins shadow and he became a very good NT for a few years. There’s precedent

Bill Belichick sounds he like he watches more tape on Sam Darnold than Todd Bowles watches tape on Sam Darnold.

Darnold was put into a ridiculously poor situation. It’s amazing that he’s been able to overcome the sh*tty coaching and lack of supporting talent.

I’m open to tanks when warranted, but this Sunday there is no reason to outright root for a loss. We have our PFQB and there is no one in the draft that excites me enough. I want Sam to go out and have a career game. If he does that and Jets win, awesome. I hate the Pats more than anything and would love to mess with their home field advantage, the way we did in 2015 which caused them to have to go to Denver for the AFCCG. If Sam dominates and Jets lose, oh well. That’s also great. However, I won’t be outright rooting for this outcome this time.

With our draft history of drafting exclusively defensive players in the first round for 10 years and only defensive head coaches for 20 years this is very embarrassing.

Don't like hearing about a guy getting hurt, but this is 4 months too late. Walford should have made the team ahead of Tomlinson in September.

We're back to circular logic, chicken and the egg. Do we suck because Macc picks bad players? Or do we suck because Bowles can't coach these players? I would counter with "two things can be true at the same time". We suck because Macc DOES draft poorly AND because Bowles cannot effectively coach. Both should IMO be fired. They are not mutual excuses for each other.

This is the one defensive guy I wouldn't mind seeing. I think his offense would be aggressive. I'd be fine giving him his 2nd shot at HC

It's like some of you are allergic to positive Jets news.
  29. 5 points
    I'd like to believe that, I really would. But I don't. For one, you don't pick a reach, small school, older, "raw" player who needs multiple years to "develop" in the third round when you are as low on team talent as we were/are. The seventh? Sure. Take a flier late. In the third, we should expect a starter at most, or a contributor at the least, immediately. Second, what gives anyone faith that Macc knew what he was doing selecting this low-probability prospect? That there is real cause to have hope he'll suddenly be a productive player? Lets look once again at Macc's record as a draft manager: Year Rnd Player Pick Pos To AP1 PB St CarAV G Cmp Att Yds TD Int Att Yds TD Rec Yds TD Int Sk College/Univ 2018 1 Sam Darnold 3 QB 2018 0 0 1 0 12 223 386 2698 17 15 43 110 1 USC 2018 3 Nathan Shepherd 72 DT 2018 0 0 0 0 15 Fort Hays St. 2018 4 Christopher Herndon 107 TE 2018 0 0 1 0 15 38 494 4 Miami (FL) 2018 6 Parry Nickerson 179 CB 2018 0 0 0 0 15 Tulane 2018 6 Folorunso Fatukasi 180 DT 2018 0 0 0 0 1 Connecticut 2018 6 Trenton Cannon 204 RB 2018 0 0 0 0 15 36 97 1 17 144 0 Virginia St. Year Rnd Player Pick Pos To AP1 PB St CarAV G Cmp Att Yds TD Int Att Yds TD Rec Yds TD Int Sk College/Univ 2017 1 Jamal Adams 6 S 2018 0 1 2 7 31 1 5.5 LSU 2017 2 Marcus Maye 39 S 2018 0 0 1 6 22 3 0.5 Florida 2017 3 ArDarius Stewart 79 WR 2017 0 0 0 1 15 7 27 0 6 82 0 Alabama 2017 4 Chad Hansen 141 WR 2017 0 0 0 1 15 9 94 0 California 2017 5 Jordan Leggett 150 TE 2018 0 0 0 0 14 13 107 1 Clemson 2017 5 Dylan Donahue 181 DL 2017 0 0 0 0 4 West Georgia 2017 6 Elijah McGuire 188 RB 2018 0 0 0 3 23 162 550 4 34 346 2 Louisiana 2017 6 Jeremy Clark 197 CB 2017 0 0 0 0 1 Michigan 2017 6 Derrick Jones 204 CB 2017 0 0 0 0 3 Mississippi Year Rnd Player Pick Pos To AP1 PB St CarAV G Cmp Att Yds TD Int Att Yds TD Rec Yds TD Int Sk College/Univ 2016 1 Darron Lee 20 OLB 2018 0 0 3 12 40 3 4.0 Ohio St. 2016 2 Christian Hackenberg 51 QB 0 0 0 Penn St. 2016 3 Jordan Jenkins 83 OLB 2018 0 0 3 12 45 12.5 Georgia 2016 4 Juston Burris 118 CB 2018 0 0 0 3 37 2 North Carolina St. 2016 5 Brandon Shell 158 T 2018 0 0 2 7 34 South Carolina 2016 7 Lac Edwards 235 P 2018 0 0 3 3 47 1 1 31 0 0 1 0 0 Sam Houston St. 2016 7 Charone Peake 241 WR 2018 0 0 0 1 30 22 214 0 Clemson Year Rnd Player Pick Pos To AP1 PB St CarAV G Cmp Att Yds TD Int Att Yds TD Rec Yds TD Int Sk College/Univ 2015 1 Leonard Williams 6 DE 2018 0 1 4 26 63 1 16.0 USC 2015 2 Devin Smith 37 WR 2016 0 0 0 1 14 10 135 1 Ohio St. 2015 3 Lorenzo Mauldin 82 OLB 2016 0 0 0 4 26 1 6.5 Louisville 2015 4 Bryce Petty 103 QB 2017 0 0 0 4 10 130 245 1353 4 10 12 74 0 Baylor 2015 5 Jarvis Harrison 152 G 0 0 0 Texas A&M 2015 7 Deon Simon 223 NT 2016 0 0 0 2 16 1.5 NW State (LA) Year Rnd Player Pick Pos To AP1 PB St CarAV G Cmp Att Yds TD Int Att Yds TD Rec Yds TD Int Sk College/Univ There is not alot here to brag about tbqh. Most of his picks are either role-filling JAG's, or gone as total busts. Only his blindingly obvious 1st round picks (Adams, Darnold, Williams, Lee) can be considered at or above average players. And even then, two are widely considered underperformers (Lee and Willaims). The 2nd and 3rd rounders? 2018 - Shephard - nothing of note in year #1 2017 - Maye - unneeded second Sagety, can't stay healthy, not much of a performer to-date 2017 - Stewart - bust WR #291 2016 - Hackenberg - never took a single snap, the only 2nd round QB to not do so in NFL history. 2016 - Jenkins - role filler at best. To paraphrase Starship Troopers, he's fine in the job, till's he's hurt, or they find somebody better. 2015 - Devin Smith - bust WR #128 2015 - Mauldin - inspired momentary hope/hype, got a few sacks, but nothing really came of it. Macc has been very VERY poor at drafting, it's really just that simple. All his credit either comes from Darnold (which we paid a ton to move up to MAYBE get, and who fell into his lap because of the Giants of all teams), Adams (consensus pick), and that some of his late rounders have been retained as moderate-talent roster-spot-and-role-fillers (Shell, Jenkins, McGuire, etc.) His only real "hit" that I see, is Herndon. a 4th rounder who looks like he might be legit as a pass catching weapon. But Shephard.....it's hard to see him working out, simply because of all the factors involved and his lack of any notable performance to-date. It's premature, he could (stress could) surprise us all, the odds simply don't favor that. And Macc is famous for missing in those rounds on guys he (and seemingle he alone) think are great that quickly wash out of the NFL.

Treadwell wasn’t good from the start. I’ve seen him play countless times and have also seen him live. Slow and can’t create separation in the pros as well. Amari Cooper was an animal and pro bowler his first two years. Totally different case for Treadwell

Can’t even properly protect Darnold with max protection and all our TE’s blocking. disgusting and even more disgusting negligence towards the OL year after year. yet Jordan Jenkins and Chris Herndon are enough for some of you dunces to accept 4 more years of Maccagnan with open arms. Coolz.

They'd be an equal or greater level in terms of desirability for the GM job if the ownership was able to dispassionately look at the success to failure rates, and the rarity of success outside the top 6 overall draft selections. The team is chiefly filled with this flexibility and freedom because of the embarrassing job of team-building these past years from Maccagnan and before him. Take the OL for example; after 4 seasons, high picks, and 2 rebuilds or whatever it is, the best OLman on the team was acquired in freaking John Idzik's first draft back in 2013, and Winters is still merely adequate himself. Ideal time to fully clean house. After $200MM in contracts is handed out this offseason (and based on history, they'll be selected poorly), and the incumbent HC is locked in for the next couple seasons minimum, and there's another year less of Darnold at only $8MM, the GM job becomes less attractive even one year later. Leave it to the Johnsons to miss an easy layup like this.

I have no sympathy for a guy that did his job so poorly & still gets to collect enough money NOT WORKING over the next year that will be more than many people here will save in their lifetimes. I'm a huge Jet fan, I love football & always can't wait for the season to start. Since that last Bills game in 2015, this team has been a sh*tshow! Just horrible. Everybody can rag on Macc all they want but his trade to 3 for only 3 second round picks which included 1 he got for Richardson whose already on his 2nd team since will go down as the best trade in our organizations history! Bowles on the other hands decisions have gotten WORSE every year, his defenses have folded like a cheap suit, players have quit on him each & every year, Adam Gase has made him his personal whipping boy with Cutler, Tannyhill, Moore, Tannyhill again & Osweiller. Omg my god I can't express how much I'm looking forward to kicking this guy out the door, he's literally ruined 4 seasons in a row of Jet football for me. This coming after Rex, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014! Its pretty amazing this team still has fans! 8 years of pure 💩.

No, that 3rd round pick combined with Petty, Hackenburg, Harrison, Donahue, Hansen, Stewart, Burris, Legget, Peake, Devin Smith, Mauldin and Darron Lee all equally ruined our SB dreams. And save the “every GM makes bad picks” defense of Macc. He leads the league in picks made that are no longer in the NFL. We have one of the worst rosters in the league. Talk to me about his 2015, 2016, 2017 drafts.

56Mehl at the end of the day pretty well every single big money signing the jets have had has laid a huge egg and been one of the worst players on the team. Like it or not that hangs on the gms neck as it should. Bowles should be on the 1st train out of NY, Mac should be on the 2nd train out of NY.

The only "duress" any quarterback feels when facing this "exotic, complex" defense is the pressure of " WHICH" of the WIDE OPEN receivers to throw to.
  44. 4 points
Tempering expectations. Belichick eats the lunch of rookie QBs and that’s not indictment of Darnold. Belly will look to utterly confuse Sam. If Darnold plays relatively well it will be something to be really excited about, especially since the Jets coaching staff is unlikely to do Sam any favours.
  45. 4 points
After watching game film of Darnold, BB has decided to retire. More to come.
  46. 4 points
So the GM signs the best available FA corner , the HC totally misuses him and its the GM's fault - um ok
  47. 4 points
Sheldumb, Mo-ron, and now Fauxmaine. Common denominator? All went from high level players to flea-ridden mutts under Bowles. Let’s see what next year brings before we write him off.
  48. 4 points
So that’s why we didn’t bother to hire a QB coach... bowles isn’t just bad... he’s also built the weakest coaching staff in nfl. Hue Jackson stunk but his coaching staff had 2 highly regarded coordinators. Methinks todd didn’t want a potential usurper in-house and because he reports directly to owner, Macc couldn’t force talent on him.
  49. 4 points
I don't think the 4-11 jets need to "tank" to lose to the 10-5 patriots

As a Macc hater I am very happy with this. Its great he finally found a good player. He should be fired still
