  1. Ultimately it's not any one thing. It's all of them at once, and one of them influencing another is the core of why the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. For example, other teams have had a single awful offensive lineman before. They've even had two who were so lowly rated/ranked. The problem is everything else isn't remotely in place, so they can't possibly handle & cover for it. I glossed over it in another thread: QB = Wilson's a rookie who typically worked out of shotgun, and - despite the attributes that made him a good prospect, like a very fast release and accuracy while doing so - has only worked in one offense and was able to do a lot of college'y things with impunity before he got here, like running backwards to avoid pressure, and many lengthy stare-downs which are really two problems: telegraphing the play to the defense and holding the ball too long. They're all fixable, rookie QBs make mistakes, and he needs to work through them; but with so many other things going on here he looks even worse and his uphill climb even steeper: LT = Becton was initially out of shape or whatever since we never got straight answers, then returned and got schooled by his own edge rusher in practice or opposing edge rusher in scrimmages. Then he got injured halfway through week 1. Fant then took over, but he was playing the other side the whole summer (except not really; more on that below). I'm not nearly buying his notion as though it's like a righty throwing lefty, but will acknowledge there's an adjustment period. LG = AVT missed all 3 preseason games. Looked totally lost week 1, but has since settled. C = McGovern is just a horrible center. While certainly not a great center with Denver before this, he didn't look nearly this bad in 2019 even when sandwiched between a weak rookie LG Risner and a has-been RG Leary (whose career ended after 2019). RG = GVR. Missed a lot of snaps this summer in a 4-headed guard competition between him, Clark, Lewis, and Feeney (and who knows how may, if any, snaps were also given to Edoga or anyone else initially). RT = Moses lost a camp competition to Fant. What that means is neither was getting all the snaps needed while installing a new system, and each probably received even less than GVR got at RG next to them. Then Fant had to switch sides when Becton went down in week 1. A cluster****. WR group is a mess. New addition Davis was, if anything, sure-handed in Tennessee. Now he has no hands at all. Mims has been discussed plenty, but it's enough to say he's not on the field. Moore missed weeks of the summer himself, then wasn't playing to his speed (thinking about scheme too much?), had hands issues of his own suddenly develop, and then got concussed. Crowder (badly undervalued by the fanbase all spring/summer) is a weird one of late; he was never an ironman but it's definitely a head-scratcher so far & couldn't possibly be so hurt he can't see the field at all since getting over covid (even while there was an extra active spot with Mims being deactivated yet again himself). Cole was supposed to be so good we didn't need Crowder anymore, since he was also more physical, and he's mostly been a ghost, only seeing action after Moore went down. Berrios is the only one playing well above expectations. Snicker all you want about him; he probably doesn't have the talent of any of the above 5, but has created enough separation in his role to get 21 targets in 3 games and reliably catch 14 of them. If only the other 5 all had his heart & dedication. RB group - some running talent here, but obvious issues with TJ picking up blitzes means he really shouldn't be on the field on passing downs until that's settled, making the play call too obvious to just have him out there on running downs. Carter looked good week 2, but by then was NE just protecting against the pass? Really, until the passing game starts doing some damage there isn't going to be much running room or consistency. Coleman is about what I'd expect given the circumstances, and ok as part of a committee. With a more legit passing threat and some better blocking he'd look a good amount better himself; but big whoop, what RB wouldn't? TE group... (*crickets chirping*) That's just the personnel. Ability-wise, there are some weak points, but the problem is all these weak points showing at once, and if there's anything compounding them. And there is: OC = LaFleur's first year of a first-time OC, installing a new offense for the first time ever, calling plays for the first time ever. He came out of a successful program, but what's starting to show is something more. It's really the only offense he's coached much and, at age 34, doesn't seem to have a seasoned-enough background to be able to change things up when he doesn't have the personnel to run what he wants, on top of all these players running it for the first time, which itself is on top of how many didn't even get a full summer of working on it with the first team because of injuries and position competitions. HC = Saleh's first year of a first-time HC, mostly powerless to do anything to change it, since that's not his forte either. Saleh's only possible remedy to change to something simpler is to demote Mike LaFleur and promote Cavanaugh. Cavanaugh isn't the greatest of the great, but he's an experienced offensive coach with many years as a QBC and OC in several different systems. He's got enough experience in other schemes to change to something different, and LaFleur may not. Except even that is an extreme long shot because there's obviously a conflict in Saleh's personal relationship ("best friends") with Matt LaFleur. If he demotes his best friend's brother, after just a few games, personally awkward wouldn't even be strong enough language. Assistant coaches on offense: Knapp (RIP) had his life cut short suddenly QBC Calabrese is 31 and is in his first year as a QBC. He was a QBC/OC at Wagner from 2017-18, lol. Coaching a rookie QB, in a system he's never coached or played in himself. OLC Benton is experienced in this scheme (or similar enough). Would seem to be a good and sensible hire. The problems with the OL may not be of his making. Assistant OLC Moreland is in his first year coaching in the NFL after being at mostly forgettable college programs. Cavanaugh came on late after Knapp's untimely passing. Good hire under the circumstances, but really he got here and then the season started like 5 minutes later. Miles Austin was a terrific receiver for a few years but at 37 is in his first year as a WRC and the early returns are pretty bad; Taylor Embree is 32, and in his first year as a RBC Middleton is an experienced TE coach, but...yeah he's just a TE coach, on a team without any discernible talent to exploit/feature at TE Anyway there's so much new all at once, it's almost folly to point to just one of them. Problems with personnel quality, problems with missed time due to health and competition at too many positions at once, all on top of a lot of newness in the scheme for all involved except for LaFleur and Benton. It was all poorly conceived, and only arrogance in doing so - plus blind optimism from the HC on down, and the fanbase - would expect non-failure given all of it at the same time. I suppose it should only get better as the newness gets less new, but there's a legit concern that Wilson's health and other things will hold up by then. I don't have a strong opinion on it, other than the strong opinion that this sucks. OK it's not an opinion; objectively this offense sucks.

  2. Yea Corey Davis dropping a 30 yard pass on third down is on Zach Wilson Carter Dropping a would be 25 yard third down conversion is on Zach Wilson Ty Johnson dropping a 4th and 2 is on Zach Wilson Allowing free rushers down the middle of the “protection” is on Zach Wilson His OC calling 5 wide empty on 4th and 1 is on Zach Wilson

  3. First off I’ll say that I was a huge proponent of hiring him, well before it was assumed he was the front runner for the job. I also still believe he can be a great coach. Not throwing in the towel on him by any means. That said, I pretty disappointed so far. And it really boils down to not being what you said you were going to be. If you are going to implement a slogan, you better live it. Results aside, the Jets play scared, cautious and conservative. Nothing like I expected. I can live with mistakes when they are made out of an abundance of effort and aggression. We have zero aggression. That needs to change pronto. Then throwing in things like “We’ve had great practices ” etc etc. No one wants to hear that. Own it. Say you weren’t good enough. Move on.

  4. I’ve been a Douglas booster because he’s done a lot of process stuff I like. That said, the team was horrific last year. Unwatchable offense, inconsistent defense, stupid mistakes, etc. So we blow out the coaching staff and turn over half the roster, and this year’s team looks exactly the same. Not good.

  5. I just turned 47 last week and can easily say that I've been a Jets fan since I was 5, My dad, born on Long Island and raised in Caldwell, NJ, is a lifelong Jets fan and corrupted me as a kid. Growing up in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, I was the odd man out in a land saturated with Packers fans and I was never afraid to stand up to my decision. I've supported this team through some thick but mostly thin for decades and in my pre-kid prime, I didn't miss a chance to catch the closest away game to Michigan I could find. Despite my annual pessimism once showcased in great detail on this site, I've continued to stick it out. I've been a believer in Saleh since the hire. I like him as a coach, I like him as a person, and with his deep roots in Metro Detroit and Northern Michigan University, I've loved having a hometown guy as our coach. The 0-3 start doesn't kill that ....I still think there's a great coach there... .....but it's getting to the point where year in and year out, watching this garbage every single year, different coaches, different GMs, different QBs.......I just don't care anymore. I'm almost to the point where I want to burn what little Jets gear I have left and move on. In my lifetime I've watch Mount Rushmore of once incompetent teams win Super Bowls. I've watched a QB with seven Super Bowl wins, lose more Super Bowls than the the Jets have Division titles in their entire history. It's beyond bad luck. It's beyond a bad run. Apathy has long since set in with this franchise but it's getting to the point of not caring anymore that I'm almost ready to move on. Not to a "new team" for the sake of picking a winner.....but moving on to having no team. Just watching pro football for the sake of watching pro football, and leaving my high heartrate for Saturdays when my Wolverines can't beat Ohio State for decades. I commend all of you who continue to pay your PSLs, season tickets, parking passes and tailgate week in and out. The comradery that comes with that cannot be beat and I've been fortunate to expereince it a few times.....it makes the garbage on the field worth it. But from 638 miles away, it's hard to have anything to look forward to with this team. I'm not quitting just yet...I don't want to quit....but damn if I'm not close. I simply think there is no one, or no one thing, that can fix this team and the generations of incompetence. I still like to think Saleh and Zach can be that change....but like everything else with this team it's hard to even me 5% optimistic. I'm just about done.

  8. There are no words for the pure "awfulness" of this team. They are below inept in every phase of football. How is it possible that from 2016-2021 our "season" has been over BEFORE October!!! Watching this team makes my hair hurt, they don't even play the same game that AVERAGE teams do. Now in their third game the coaching staff is showing "Gase like" tendencies on offense as they continue to generate nothing. Also, the staff is showing "Herm like" tendencies in clock management as they get a delay of game penalty and take a 56 yard FG off the board. This is beyond brutal, unless something miraculously changes can this team even match the two win total from last year???

  10. Why does everyone keep assuming there is something wrong with Mims attitude? Did he have an attitude problem last year or at Baylor? NO HE DID NOT. All of sudden, everything is the kids fault, he is lazy, he can't learn etc. What a crock of sh*t. This kid can PLAY, I don't give a crap about this scheme or that one. Get him on the field and create some plays to get him the ball. That is what any Coach with half a brain would do. Lets also not forget he is also a very good BLOCKER. Something this offense could use right now in the run game. Sorry, this is on the rookie HC and his co-rookie OC, period. They have outsmarted themselves and allowed pride to prevent them from thinking what is truly in the best interests of the team and especially the teams young rookie quarterback. Namely a 6'4 freak with sub 4.4 speed and a large catch radius who can out duel most DBs on 50-50 balls and give the quarterback a big physical target that he can begin to build some chemistry with. The fact that they REFUSE to make this kid active and are wasting his second (practically is rookie season) year is as ****ed up as it gets. This is why players have to look out for themselves; their career is short enough as it is, and here we have a COMPLETELY HEALTHY player at a position where his counterparts are struggling and he can't even be activated for the game???? Saleh really needs to have his feet held to the fire over this. The ******* Honeymoon is over as far as I'm concerned.

  11. @BP had a really good idea (shocker) on how to pay our respects to @Savage69. We just renamed the NFL forum in his honor for the season. Hopefully the Jets realize that the season has already started soon. RIP Savage.

  15. This kid has talent oozing through his veins, he is better than I thought Great at evading the rush, rocket arm, tough as nails Drafting him over Darnold was the right move He nor any QB in NFL history can play the position under these circumstances The problem with the OL is the players. Until Fant, McGovern, and Van Roten are replaced they will continue to embarrass themselves. John Benton is a good OL coach, yet they look the same as last year. Why? The players are the same. There is no solution there Mike Lafleur is in over his head and has proven to be utterly incapable of designing an offense or calling plays to protect his QB. He is not an innovator. Sit Wilson, let LaFleur get fired at the end of the year and use every asset you have next year to actually fix the OL and get a TE

  16. Is it the losses or the way they're losing?
    16 points
  17. No one is open and when they are they drop the ball. When the OL blocks well, no one is open. When they don’t block well, Wilson is sacked. But it’s all Wilson’s fault.

  18. You cant bench Zach. You cant trade him. And nobody is losing their job, it's week 3. You have to stick to the plan and let all these rookies work through the adversity and hope it's good for them long term. Everyone knew this was going to be ugly, take it on the chin and dont hit the panic button All you can do is hope they get better as the season goes on and hope this next offseason with all that money and all those picks, they really move the needle talent wise and I think Robert Saleh needs to really look hard at his staff and assess if he truly has the best possible coaches he can find to help develop Zach Wilson.

  22. Building the O line was his motto. Well it sucks…. Drafting builds the team. Noting nchanged there and in the big WR from the WR rich 2020 draft does not even dress. Too many wasted draft picks. Morgan in the 4th, a complete waste. Time to really put this guy under the microscope. Can’t draft is death in the NFL. May be time for a fan protest ….

  23. He has the right A gap you ******* trolls. The fact that a c-hair to his left a 300lb monster is barreling in unblocked on his adolescent QB isn't his problem. Did or did not the right A gap stay clean?

  24. No pre snap motion to help the QB. No misdirection to create lanes. No roll outs to slow down the pass rush. No draws. No screens. No "safe" throws to the RBs to find rhythm. I'm with Mims. I wouldn't waste my time learning this sh!t offense either...

  25. I felt that the delay of game was on the new holder. My concern is the Gaseness of this offense. They did nothing to help Wilson out. Between the drops and the lack of open receivers it was scary. Wilson's pocket presence is terrible right now. It is going to take time for him to improve in that area but his awareness just isn't good. A lot of that stems from week one where he got hammered non stop. But can't the OC help the kid out with some short passes, roll him out, build some momentum. And 3rd and short with a rookie QB you go with empty back field multiple times? This is a kid playing in his 3rd game. Keep it simple, even if you are going to pass, let's keep the defense honest. Terrible decisions by the OC.

  27. This could make for some awkward conversations in the Jets locker room in the coming weeks. Duke Manyweather, the offensive line guru who works with countless NFL linemen during the offseason, including Jets left tackle Mekhi Becton has offered a less-than-flattering assessment of jets right guard Greg Van Roten. I try to stay OL positive, but man… The Jets have to upgrade RG! 62 is a liability — Duke Manyweather (@BigDuke50) September 26, 2021 Following the Jets atrocious showing in their 26-0 loss to the Denver Broncos, Manyweather took to twitter to say that despite his best efforts to stay positive, the Jets “have to upgrade at RG!” and that “62 is a liability” with 62 of course being Van Roten. Last season didn’t get off to a much better start for Van Roten but he managed to hang on to his job as he turned things around after the first quarter of the season. This year, with Dan Feeney on board and Isaiah Williams recently earning a spot on the game day roster, could an effort to replace Van Roten be far off? 32. Early because after 2 1/2 quarters the Denver game is OVER and we are 0-3 I'm in my office typing cause I stopped watching which is something I never do as a Jets fan in the 50 years I've been rooting for them. Corey Davis .... can't make a contested catch to save his life and can't make a tough catch in any capacity. He's the number 2 WR the Titans knew they had and exactly why they did not extend him or meet the Jets offer. Sorry but he's far from a Number 1 guy. He's like Robbie Anderson without the speed. Micheal Carter.... fooled a lot of you last week with no one defending the run, stinks just like he did in week 1. This is and will be a Jag. The Play Calling .... I'm not even sure what to say here. If this is on Zach fine but on 3rd and 2 why throw 20 yards down field to a covered receiver ?? Is it because we can't run and we know it ? Did Zach miss another check down ? I saw a lot of guys downfield on that play (will know more with all 22) maybe get more creative with more short quick routes. I THINK WE HAD A SCREEN SIGHTING !!!!!! I think we had one screen play in the first half . How can we not scheme Elijah Moore open at all ? WHY THE HELL is Mims not in there playing WR with Davis and putting Moore in the slot ????? WTF The one positive I can take at this point is that our Corners are in tight coverage and are doing just fine. Unfortunately they are not covering Corey Davis so they are dealing with the opposition making some very nice contested catches. I think this is the one and only bright spot on the team and its funny how it was the most suspect going into the season.

  38. I can’t lie, this is about as low as I’ve felt as a fan (~25 years). Our GM, head coach, and offensive coordinator all have impeccable pedigrees, and yet none seems to know his ass from a hole in the ground. Our QB is lost, again, and our previous lost QB is 3-0 and playing the best football of his career. We suffered through last year’s horrorshow, and we’re not improved. We’re not even getting a dead cat bounce. We actually look worse. And under it all is the soul-killing knowledge that this is how it’s going to be for a couple more years at least. Even if we get the first overall pick, we’re not firing the GM or coach and we’re not taking a QB. It’s the crushing knowledge that the last three games were just the start of yet another long, pointless stretch of uncompetitive, unwatchable football, after which we’ll finally, belatedly fire everybody (though almost certainly not all at once) and do this all over again. Just inutterbly ******* bleak.
