Defense - I think we are going to see some drastic scheme changes. The DLine will still be the focus, but the additions to the secondary leads me to believe we will see: * More 1 on 1 coverage * Less zone concepts * More blitzing from the secondary, particularly the CBs * More positional switching - You don't spend the amount of free agency $$$ (DJ Reed & Jordan Whitehead) and draft capital (Ahmad Gardner) on players to have them play vanilla Cover 2/ Cover 3 all game. Particularly when their tape showed that they're physical, can press cover and blitz - With the depth we have in the secondary we should see massive "cross training" as we head to camp. The staff flipped Jason Pinnock to safety last year and in my opinion we should do the same with Bryce Hall. A secondary that has "positionless" players can confuse QBs and lead to INTs - John Franklin-Myers should "float" between DE and DT based on the situation Offense - I believe the drafting of Breece Hall will shift the RB position from a committee approach to a RB1, RB2, RB3 structure. Hall's size and college production showed he can be RB1 (20-25 touches) and even though Michael Carter was impressive last year he did get banged up. Which leads me to believe he would be better suited to a RB2 (10-15 touches) role. The fight for the RB3 role will be wicked between Tevin Coleman, Ty Johnson, Zonovan Knight, Austin Walter and Lamical Perine - With actual TEs on the roster this year I would expect to see some of the "SF Kittle" package incorporated into the passing game - I'm glad we didn't double dip at WR in the draft. Because I want to see if Denzel Mims has any shot at reaching his draft potential. I'm not expecting it but if Mims somehow finds his game a WR corps with him being WR5 would be scary - Now its all on Zach Wilson to thrive in this offense. Because Joe Douglas has done for him everything Mike Maccagnan didn't do for Sam Darnold. The OLine has been revamped and there is quality and depth at the skill positions. Wilson now needs to show what he did in the TB game for an entire 17 game schedule43 points

For real - up and down the roster, and including at depth - we've got a real, solid team, one that's capable of competing for the playoffs (and doing damage in the playoffs) if the QB plays well. Our OL is a top-10 OL, with our biggest question mark being our 1st round mauler of a RT with a chip on his shoulder Our WR group is 4-deep with legitimate starting caliber WRs, though we don't have the upper echelon No. 1 that would really unlock it. Either way, it's fast and versatile. Our TE room has to be among the best in the league - and all three guys are very good at both receiving and blocking. We've got two legit studs as our 1-2 punch at RB in Hall and Carter The DL is deep - maybe a bit light in the interior without Foley, but if Lawson comes back healthy it's going to be a terror at rushing the passer. NASCAR package of Lawson-Q-JFM-Johnson will be a thing to behold. I don't love our LBs but the coaching staff does, and Mosely is still a top end player (though a wildly overpaid one). This is the one area of the team where the depth is a real question mark DBs are deep and talented. Sauce-Reed-Hall-MC2 is as good a top 4 as you can ask for, Echols has a lot of experience and talent for a 5th CB. S lacks top-end talent but Whitehead-Joyner is very solid, Davis still has potential, and Reilly and Pinnock both played well towards the end of the year last year. There's no reason this roster can't compete with anyone in the NFL if we get good QB play. None.19 points

Hughes was all over the free agency period and is clearly JD's mouth piece. I didn't listen to the piece yet, but he can't be upset about the misinformation leading up tot the draft. It was actually brilliant: -Feed local beat reporter accurate info all offseason -Everyone believes he's dialed in (he is) -Give him false draft info to mislead the league16 points

I'm always amazed at how some of you know who any of these guys are. I can't figure out if that makes you impressive or the biggest zeros in the face of the earth.16 points

The Jets have been in a vicious cycle of late. The end of the Mike Tannenbaum era carried a chips-all-in mentality balanced by the John Idzik era of savings and pragmatism (though most of the draft picks they acquired failed to produce). This was followed by a disastrous Mike Maccagnan regime that buried the franchise … until now? As we mentioned in our draft night recap, I’m not sure people understand how difficult a job Joe Douglas had and how far the roster has come. With this class, the team should be able to start seeing some results. Ruckert was an interesting pickup. On film at Ohio State, he carried some of the exact same responsibilities as Kyle Jusczcyk and George Kittle do in the 49ers’ offense, down to some of the minute, arc-motion-style blocking. This should be a real plug-and-play scenario for the Jets, who needed more players intimately familiar with the way offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur wants to run his offense. Hall is exactly what Zach Wilson and the offense needs: a running back who can turn a play dead in the backfield into something. At Iowa State, he rescued the Cyclones from time to time when their offensive line was plowed over.13 points

What I like about this offseason is that we are building a roster for a young QB to succeed with. I expect an offense that is built around the running game. We have a strong OL, 3 TEs, and with the addition of Hall, we should have a solid stable of backs with a potential feature back. With Wilson, we now have several WRs who know how to run routes and get separation -- which shoudl make Zach's job easier. Zach wlil need to make plays, but he will just have to manage the offense, not carry it. We are not ready to win shootouts with Zach (hopefully that comes in another year or two). Last season, we were 3-2 when holding opponents to 24 or less. 1-11 giving up 25+. Defense appears to be much improved. Ball control offense. We should be able to win enough games this season to keep us interested into December. Anything less, imo, will be failure.12 points

I actually think Ruckert will be a better pro player than college player and could become an elite TE in the NFL. Was a stealthy awesome pick. Plus his whole family are Jets fans.12 points

A worthwhile listen from Hughes about the dynamics behind the Sauce pick and how he got burned by his Jets sources. Also an interesting nugget that the Giants probably take Sauce instead of Thibodeux if the Jets passed on him. https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/cant-wait-a-show-about-the-new-york-jets/id1477129387?i=100055912527411 points

Are the Jets still the worst team in AFC East? Yes... Until they play a game & PROVE Otherwise... "Paper" doesn't take precedence over "Play"11 points

Love the whole post, but let’s not put it all on Zach. I want to see the coaching staff take at least as big a jump. Honestly, I think it’s more important.10 points

Awesome! I imagine that's how any of our fathers would've reacted if we were lucky enough to have Ruck's talent. He's one of us and I'm pulling for him!10 points

I'm not sure if this belongs in the draft forum or not, but this is a 20 minute video breaking down Hall by Matt Waldmann, who IMO is one of the better film guys on the internet. If you don't want to watch the 20 minute video, Waldmann is a very big fan of Hall and thinks he can be a star:9 points

Get him. Playoffs become possibility. I may be crazy but this feels real. We didn't get the 25 mil WR. We can afford it, no?9 points

Hughes and Cimini are the only two writers at least attempting to do more than regurgitate Jets press releases and provide interesting content. There are roughly 15-20 people covering this team at any one time, and Hughes is the only one who writes anything that we here, on the #1 most trafficked Jets board on the internet, ever bother to talk about. I don’t mind if they get it wrong every so often. At least they’re hustling. ACTUALLY @Paradis, he was ok with it and understood that it’s part of the job to get played by sources around draft time. Interestingly, another guy who had to issue a public mea culpa was Douglas’ college buddy Todd McShay, who used up half of an ESPN hit to express his humiliation over the sourcing that led to his putrid mock draft8 points

Last year was the free pass. Absolutely not. It is time for the Jets to compete.8 points
-
In their most recent press conference, JD and Saleh mentioned more than once you need to give guys 3 years to develop. To me, that sounds like Mims, Becton, and that class will get this year to show what they can do.8 points
-
The challenge for Mims seems to have been his ability to grasp additional routes and roles. This staff expects guys to do more than just one or two things. Mims was really good in college…. at one or two things. That’s why this off-season is so important to him. He is truly learning some new things, needs to get some additional routes down and execute them consistently on the field. Hopefully he stays away from the sushi this summer because his illness clearly took away from the valuable time when he needed to be learning under this new coaching staff.8 points

Interesting thing about London. Saleh has said multiple times post draft that they were looking for guys who can take it "80". Hence the sub 4.4 guys like Garrett Wilson and Breece Hall. He mentioned it si to hard to score putting together 10 - 15 play drives. He wants 2-3 play drives every so often. Based on that, i dont think London was ever on our board. Thank you Atlanta! Thank you!!8 points

I’ve wanted Wilson for months…but it’s Breece. I never thought the Jets would have the balls to take a RB that high. Not only did they do it, but they traded up in the process. This dude has the talent to immediately walk in and put up 1200 yards rushing as a rookie. Hall, Carter and Coleman immediately becomes one of the better backfield stables in the league. And with the addition of Tomlinson and getting Becton back, the Jets should run the ball better than they have in at least a decade.8 points

So he's good at evaluating running backs and horrible at evaluating quarterbacks?7 points
-
Yeah, but condense it down to just the AFCe. Jets blew away every other team in the division this weekend. They added legitimate playmakers on both sides of the ball.7 points
-
The Eagles are probably the most instantly improved side after the weekend. I think they have a serious chance of winning that division. AJ Brown, Jordan Davis, Nakobe Dean. If they stay healthy those are guys who will be good right away. Brown obviously. Devonta Smith as a #2 is going to feast. Make or break for Hurts for sure. Baltimore and KC are two of the best run organisations in football and the draft showed it again. The Ravens fleeced the Cardinals for Hollywood Brown. Hamilton, Linderbaum and Jones are likely immediate contributors. They got great value all over the draft. Faalele and Armour-Davis too. It was ridiculous. The Chiefs got McDuffie, Karlaftis, Skyy Moore all well after I thought they’d go. The latter is better than some of the WR’s who went ahead of him and I bet he’s going to kill it playing with Mahomes. Leo Chanel later was a guy we were constantly mocking to the Jets. Another guy who’ll contribute right away IMO. The Lions obviously had a great draft too getting the best player and the guy who I felt was the best reciever. I think the board fell nicely for the Giants and as OP mentioned the Packers had a great night too. Hilariously the worst draft by some distance was the Patriots. They’re playing their own game.7 points

Which players on the current Jets roster came out of the 2022 draft as "Winners" and which seem to have come out as "Losers" WINNERS QB Zach Wilson Jets added a top WR, the top RB, a good TE prospect, and a backup OL in the draft. Garrett Wilson and Breece Hall will be immediate contributors and Ruckert will help out as the season goes on. WR Denzel Mims Yes the Jets drafted a WR, but they didn't draft 2. As of right now, Mims is the 5th WR on the roster. Not taking a WR in the middle rounds either means 1) the Jets think Mims still has potential or 2) they will try to sign a FA later. But for now at least, Mims is a winner OT Mekhi Becton Jets didn't pick on the 3 top OTs available at #4. They did add an OT in the 4th round, but for right now, the rumors of Becton's demise seem to be greatly exaggerated DT Jonathan Marshall Big defensive lineman played well as the year progressed and seems to be firmly entrenched in the team's long term plans - passed on several good DTs in the 3rd and 4th round The "Safetybackers" Jamien Sherwood and Hamsah Nasirildeen struggled mightily at times last year and ended up being hurt. Jets had a chance to draft a good LBs but didn't pick one. Jamien and Hamsah can breath a sigh of relief for now LOSERS RBs LaMichael Perine and Ty Johnson Trying desperately to trade up into the 1st round for a RB is bad news for Perine, a perpetually injured Jets draftee and Johnson, who at least made some decent contributions when called upon. At this point, you have to figure both will be gone come cutdown day TEs Trevon Wesco and Kenny Yeboah Jeremy Ruckert is probably taking Wesco's spot although he could hang on as a 4th TE/FB. Yeboah seems like a good guy and he has talent, but Practice Squad looks like his best option OT Chuma Edoga Hard to think of any scenario where drafting a swing OT in the 4th round is good news for the swing tackle currently on the roster Edge's Bryce Huff, Tim Ward, Jabari Zuniga, Hamilcar Rashed Drafting 2 Edge defenders means "adios" to Ward and Zuniga for sure. MAYBE Huff can stick since he is pretty solid when healthy. Zuniga might make the Practice Squad.7 points

The Rebuild is now officially over. No one here should be referring to "rebuilding" any further under this regime. And no, there are no more free passes. That doesn't mean we fire any Coaches or Front Office or cut all the players if we finish with 7 or 8 wins this year. They are still a very young team. What we must see is a team that is competitive week in and week out (1) and a team that continues to improve year over year (2). The biggest and most glaring single question mark remains the most vital position on the field: Zach Wilson, QB. As he rises, so shall we. If he fails, so shall we.7 points

I said it in a earlier post: If Mims shows ANYTHING he's our number 5. If he somehow puts it together, however unlikely, he's our number 1. That's worth hanging onto for another 2 years.7 points

The fact they keep adding all these backs tell me they're not happy with anyone other than Carter and Hall. Remember when this was one of the most important threads of the year because our drafts were always filled with head scratchers? It's a nice change of pace to not sweat out UDFA signings this year.7 points

Rookies still have to pan out, that said, this is the first draft in over 10 years where the players taken have felt like smart choices that map to organizational change. Really the first time since about 2008 where I haven’t felt like we’re being sold a perpetual, 5-yr rebuild plan.7 points
