  4. They’ve peeled the tarp off the floor of Soldier Field, revealing the grass field that’s in fairly good shape for the Jets-Bears game that’s about to be played on it. Snow fell lightly in the neighborhood last night, leaving some thin residue here and there in the proud stadium on the shores of Lake Michigan, but except for a few flurries, it’s expected only cloudy, cold (30 degrees) and gusty (13-26 mph winds) in the Windy City. It’s not like the weather back home at the moment, just your normal welcome to Chicago. The 10-4 Jets want to wrap up a playoff berth today and avoid a win-

  10. As the days in 2010 dwindle to a precious few, so do the playoff scenarios. And the Jets’ win at Pittsburgh did a world of good in minimizing the amount of things that will keep the Green & White out of their second consecutive postseason grid under head coach Rex Ryan. Specifically, there are three simple scenarios under which the Jets clinch a berth: Scenario 1 — Jets win (or tie) at Chicago at 1 p.m. ET. The Jets would then rise to 11-4. No other wild-card challenger could then catch them at 11-5 and bump them via tiebreakers. Or … Scenario 2 — Jaguars lose (or
  11. Something else in the Jets’ favor today in their major climb is the state of the Steelers’ health. Their inactive list has just been distributed here in the pressbox and as rumored for a few days, S Troy Polamalu and TE Heath Miller have both been deactivated. The loss of each is a small blow to a Pittsburgh side that is not only trying to extend its hex over the visitor from the East but also is trying to keep ahead of another Eastern Seaboard team, the Ravens, in the battle for the AFC North title and a possible wild-card bye week. Lastly is the Jets’ own sense of well-being. They were

  17. Wide receiver Patrick Turner has been signed back to the New York Jets' practice squad. He was cut to make room for defensive lineman Jarron Gilbert. Turner has appeared in five games, catching two passes. Claimed off waivers by the Miami Dolphins in September, the former third-round draft pick from USC collided with safety Jim Leonhard in a practice mishap that broke Leonhard's leg. A 6-foot-5, 220-pound possession receiver, Turner played sparingly with the Dolphins. At USC, he was ultra-productive with 138 career catches for 1,752 yards and 17 touchdowns.
