  3. He's going to be here next year. This was the first year for his coaching staff and a slew of rookies. All of them will get a pass this year. The question is going to be whether he gets to stay in 2023. Another year like this no matter how much the roster improves is probably the end for Douglas. Hope that an improved roster brings an improved GM candidate and move on. If there is forward progress in spite of a failing Wilson then Douglas probably gets another year or two to keep things moving forward. Picking a QB at #2 is always a high risk/reward move and I would imagine Woody signed off on the pick which would give Douglas some insulation on that pick. Douglas has his work cut out for him. Aside from some of the 2021 picks there's not a lot of positives to point out as forward progress. He has to have a good draft, make some good FA moves, see improvement from most of the current roster, if Wilson has another bad year come in with a viable alternative and especially better coaching from his selected staff. That's a lot that needs to go right. A complete guess but Douglas probably needs seven or eight wins plus several close losses plus a strong pitch for the future to keep the job in 2023. I'd guess he needs a winning season but our schedule next year isn't going to be easy.
  4. All mock drafts are attempts to create discussion so people will keep watching/clicking. As teams fall out of contention towards the end of the season there's not a lot to catch attention of losing teams' fans in the current year so you have to start talking about next year and how the remaining games might affect the result. This is true for every team in that position. If you're talking about it then the mock draft is doing its job regardless of accuracy.
  5. Pour them all out and who wants to give up a successful coordinator position for a head coach role over a lousy roster when you might not last one season? Who wants to be a first round QB to come to a team where you might get cut or traded after one year with a lousy head coach? Seasons always start at 0-0 but teams don't get to hit reset every year and make new decisions without any effect from their prior decisions. NYJ is already an undesirable destination for coaches and players. Making it more undesirable isn't going to help. No winning coach is coming here just for the challenge of trying to turn around an entire organization with potentially only a year to make it happen.
  6. I've laughed at how comically bad the team has been especially as the season has gone on. I haven't been watching the games intently and even yesterday I was at a bar showing all the games and barely watched the second half once the Saints started pulling away. Football is entertainment and if not entertained there's no point in suffering because you're supposed to or whatever. There are too many better ways to spend a Sunday afternoon. No point to rooting for losses unless it makes you feel good to do it. The coaching staff and roster will substantially remain in place even if the team is blown out the remaining games.
  7. How do you know they don't pursue them? You can go back and see that the Jets are rumored to express interest in candidates who won't even take the interview or decline further interest after the interview. The Jets interviewed Caldwell before hiring Gase. In Caldwell's case none of the teams where he interviewed pursued him and he ended up as a coordinator. Not sure how much you can blame the Jets for making the same decision as the Packers. None of the teams wanted him as a head coach and still don't. Outside of Gase, yes, it's always defensive coordinators. That comes back to available options. Experienced head coaches want to go to a team where wins are likely. This hasn't been it outside of when they hired Sexy Rexy. Offensive coordinators with success usually have a FQB and a solid roster. They don't have a lot of incentive to go from an ideal situation as an OC to a terrible situation as HC. DCs are generally not married to the defensive staff so they can try their hand at HC and if it fails, like Bowles, there's usually a team looking for a DC.
  8. How many head coaches with a proven track record have seriously pursued this job since Parcells? The team can't force people to come coach here and even paying a premium isn't enticing if a lousy roster is going to produce three losing seasons before being fired.

The missing piece of your puzzle is a high draft pick QB willing to go to a team where he has a 50% chance of sitting on the bench until the team trades him away and if he wins the job has to worry if he has a string of bad games that he might permanently lose the job. Pretty much any QB who isn't out of NCAA eligibility would return to college to avoid entering the league under the least advantageous conditions for a high pick.

  11. I can't see Woody wanting to pay for two head coaches all over again, Douglas actively pursuing another head coach a year after hiring Saleh, or Tomlin wanting to come here. This is a hypo where Tomlin pitches himself to the Jets to get Douglas interested. I'm not sure there is a blood pact between Douglas and Saleh that would keep him here under this highly unlikely scenario. This is so far out of the realm of possibility that I'm not sure what we get out of guessing what Douglas might think.
  12. IMO Lawrence has been the worst QB of the first round picks by a lot. Both Lawrence and Wilson suffer roster and coaching issues but they are both part of their own problems this year. The book is still out on both QBs but Lawrence is another example of the caution that should be exerted with taking QBs from the top tier college programs. I've said it all year but these QBs all play in offenses built on taking advantage of player mismatches that won't exist in the NFL. A lot of big plays that come off plays breaking down and guys getting open rather than making reads and quick decision-making. Not every Trey Lance or Zach Wilson is going to succeed either but it's easier to get star struck by a Clemson or USC QB with bowl games and endless media hype.

  19. There have been some unwatchable games but turn them off and go do something enjoyable with your time. You don't have to keep watching and you don't have to write a monologue about how tough your life is because you chose to keep watching a game on TV.
  20. Giving up on a QB after half a season is crazy. This is the effect of a culture of immediacy and fans desperate to stake out a forceful opinion on every subject and then march around talking about how right they were because that's what all sports media has taught us must be the conversation. I said this in a different thread but Wilson is being asked to operate completely different with the Jets than he did in BYU. They aren't letting him throw long bombs and hope for the best or wait for plays to break down to find open receivers. They want to teach him to make plays like other QBs which makes a lot of sense. Of course he's going to struggle and it's going to take take to break habits and form new ones. If you don't do that we risk watching one good year of heroball followed by an offseason of defensive coordinators learning how to break down his game and then he becomes invisible until they cut him and start over. Maybe Wilson doesn't have what it takes but his performance has to be placed in context of what he's being asked to do.
  21. It's wild to think in the 1990s and earlier halfbacks were big playmakers with seemingly fewer injuries. Now the game is pass heavy and the top running backs are knocked out with injuries before the playoffs all the time. Defenses got faster and now those elusive running backs aren't so elusive. This is why the team shouldn't pluck out a RB early in the draft and continue to run the ball with a committee.
  22. Wilson is going to get another couple seasons barring some meltdown or career limiting injury. Wilson came out of a fairly different offensive system and he's being asked to operate differently as a QB in a different system. They aren't giving him a lot of familiar territory to get comfortable with and maintain his college habits. Add to that the problems earlier in the season with drops, poor blocking, poor offensive coaching, etc. and you would expect him to make a lot of mental mistakes. Obviously he's not coming along as quickly as any of us would like but players develop at different speeds and he's got to be given opportunity to develop. It's ridiculous to compare him to guys who have been in the league for years--especially when two of those guys have been in the league for a decade or more. He's more akin to the other early picks who are also having terrible years. Mac Jones is the real exception here but even that comparison is tenuous. Jones went from a college program surrounded by future NFL players playing a spread offense against other teams full of future NFL players (SEC) to an NFL team adopting spread techniques from Jones's former college team. Jones had the smallest leap from college to pro any QB could hope for. Jones might top out as a middling QB and Wilson might always be terrible but half a season is too early to even think about these questions.
  23. Mosley looked like maybe he was something earlier in the season but he seems to have disappeared. He doesn't seem to be a fit for the defense and maybe lacks the athleticism of his earlier days to justify the contract. Mac said early on he wanted to build a sustainable roster and one of the ways he intended to do that was to follow what he described as the Steelers model. He described it as building up inventory at positions where good players could be acquired reasonably in the draft year over year in positions where guys normally wanted a big second contract. If you can build a stable of young guys at those positions you can free up money to spend where it's harder to get performance on rookie contracts. You could let your starters go when they wanted big contracts and slide in a young player. He specifically mentioned LB as one of these positions and I believe he mentioned the same at slot receiver and RB. That would have been a fine approach if he wasn't awful at talent evaluation across the board. It seemed like he knew his plan wasn't working and decided to try to pay to bring in starters and then draft in behind them and let the rookies learn from experienced vets. That explains a lot about the latter contracts Mac gave out. Mac made poor choices year over year and as he felt the pressure of poor performance he panicked and decisions got worse. I don't know what the right answer is with Mosley. That is a lot of dead money to cut him loose and who is going to replace him that's better? The least awful option may be letting Mac's poor decisions attrit with the least harm to the team and allocate resources where they can add the most value.
  24. Sure--these premises are all correct. Garrett was going to get another job as a HC or OC because he has a fair amount of experience at both. Coaching staffs are always made up of guys who didn't succeed somewhere else because there aren't enough ascendant coaches in the league who are consistently great at higher positions and stop before they've exceeded their capacity. As a head coach you have to consider the facts of a hire's history--specifically why they failed in the past--and work around it. That's true of hiring employees anywhere. You have to hire people who are not perfect and manage them to perform their best. If you look at Garrett's history this was a setup for failure. He only worked for one team where the GM/owner had special affinity for him and lost every interview he had with every other team. His offenses looked their best with a great roster where the players bailed out the coaching rather than the coaching maximizing the value of the roster. He was terrible at in-game adjustments despite more than a decade of OC/HC experience. He did for the Giants exactly what he did for Dallas. He's just not a guy who runs an offense in-game well. I get that maybe as a long term former QB and with Prescott's success Garrett would make sense to coach up a young QB but he's at best a QB coach--but even that is probably a stretch. If Jerry Jones did not have such affinity for Garrett then he'd probably be a QB coach at a small Div I school at most but he's going to ride that NFL experience right down to the end of his career.
