..especially the 2014 draft - Jets still haunted by 2014 NFL draft failure -- a .083 batting average The Idzik 12 Under former GM John Idzik, the Jets drafted 12 players in 2014. Only two are currently on NFL rosters: RD. PLAYER, POS. NFL GAMES 1 Calvin Pryor, S 38 2 Jace Amaro, TE 17 3 Dex McDougle, CB 31 4 Jalen Saunders, WR 15 4 Shaq Evans, WR 0 4 Dakota Dozier, OL 37 5 Jeremiah George, LB 37 6 Brandon Dixon, CB 19 6 Quincy Enunwa, WR 40 6 IK Enemkpali, LB 17 6 Tajh Boyd, QB 0 7 Trevor Reilly, LB 37 1. Swing and a miss: It's the (gag) gift that keeps on giving (agita). We're talking about the 2014 NFL draft, arguably the worst in Jets history. When offensive lineman Dakota Dozier signed recently with the Minnesota Vikings, it left the Jets with only one player from the '14 draft -- wide receiver Quincy Enunwa. One out of 12 picks. Five years after the Idzik 12 -- the general manager at the time was John Idzik -- the Jets still are feeling the impact of that lost draft. If they had hit on, say, six out of 12, they would have a nice group of core players and they wouldn't be reliant on free agency to plug holes. But instead of pulling off a watershed draft, Idzik & Co. watered down the roster. The Jets' record since then is 28-52. The draft started on a bad note, as then-coach Rex Ryan unsuccessfully lobbied Idzik to trade up for wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. Maybe it was bad karma, because it got progressively worse over the three-day draft. The 2014 draft, which was loaded with talent, has produced 27 Pro Bowl players, according to Pro Football Reference. Of the 256 players selected, 115 have started at least one season. Only two Jets picks are on that list -- Enunwa and safety Calvin Pryor, who washed out after being chosen No. 18 overall. Here are a few more factoids about that ill-fated '14 draft: Only two of the 12 (Enunwa and Dozier) are currently on NFL rosters, but that isn't the most staggering part. This is: Eight of the 12 picks were out of the league last season. Eleven of the 12 have been cut at least once. Many have forgotten, but Enunwa was actually waived by the Jets as a rookie and added to the practice squad, where he began his journey to the starting lineup. All told, the 12 picks have been cut 44 times by 20 different teams. The leaders: Cornerback Dexter McDougle, linebacker Jeremiah George and cornerback Brandon Dixon each have been cut six times. The only unscathed player is Dozier, who left via free agency. Only one of the 12 was cut after punching a teammate in the face -- linebacker IK Enemkpali (see: Geno Smith). The Jets managed to mine some talent from '14 the second time around, signing linebackers Avery Williams (2018) and C.J. Mosley (2019) as free agents. It just cost them a lot more money than it would have the first time. - - https://www.espn.com/blog/new-york-jets/post/_/id/79603/jets-still-haunted-by-2014-nfl-draft-failure-a-083-batting-average

How about the 2012 Draft. In the second round we took stephen hill when russell wilson was still on the board

Has to be signing Muhammad Wilkerson and not signing Damon Harrison

also - 7. At least they're consistent: The Jets are the only team with a turnover in every game. And you're probably not shocked by that. - - https://www.espn.com/blog/new-york-jets/post/_/id/88419/new-york-jets-mekhi-becton-est-370-pounds-big-question-mark

6. A 'zero' anniversary: Last week marked the one-year anniversary of the infamous "Cover Zero" loss to the Las Vegas Raiders, who got defensive coordinator Gregg Williams fired the next day. Quick refresher: Leading by four points in the final seconds, Williams made a reckless call -- a Cover-Zero blitz that resulted in a 46-yard touchdown reception by Henry Ruggs III. The loss dropped the Jets to 0-12. Five of the 11 players on the field for that play are no longer with the Jets -- linebackers Jordan Jenkins, Neville Hewitt and Harvey Langi, safety Matthias Farley and defensive end Tarell Basham. The cornerback who got burned on the touchdown, Lamar Jackson, remains on the practice squad. Williams, 63, is out of football, but could look to return in 2022. - - https://www.espn.com/blog/new-york-jets/post/_/id/88419/new-york-jets-mekhi-becton-est-370-pounds-big-question-mark

how 'bout - 8. The Davis debacle: One of the worst personnel decisions of the past decade was letting linebacker Demario Davis get away -- not once, but twice. You have to believe Davis will try to remind them of what they're missing Sunday as he leads the Saints' defense into MetLife Stadium. After drafting Davis in 2012, the Jets allowed him to walk as a free agent in 2016, tabbing Erin Henderson as his replacement. (Bad choice.) They reacquired Davis in a very good 2017 trade, sending first-round bust Calvin Pryor to the Cleveland Browns, then failed to make an aggressive effort to re-sign him in 2018 free agency. Now he's one of the best linebackers in the league, a great example of a late bloomer and an organization too blind to recognize it. - - https://www.espn.com/blog/new-york-jets/post/_/id/88419/new-york-jets-mekhi-becton-est-370-pounds-big-question-mark

4. Did you know? The Jets are tied for the league lead in dropped passes. They have 23, along with the Kansas City Chiefs and Jacksonville Jaguars, per ESPN Stats & Information. The Jets' leader is Corey Davis (six). - - https://www.espn.com/blog/new-york-jets/post/_/id/88419/new-york-jets-mekhi-becton-est-370-pounds-big-question-mark

3. 'Berry' good player: The Jets would be wise to re-sign wide receiver/returner Braxton Berrios before he hits the open market in March. He's one of the fastest players on the team, a slippery slot receiver who is making a Pro Bowl run as a return specialist. He leads the NFL in kickoff average (28.9) and he's third in punt-return average (13.6, but not qualified). His 79-yard kickoff return last week set up a touchdown on the opening possession. "Whatever, wherever," said Berrios, describing his role and value. Of the three receivers hitting free agency -- Berrios, Jamison Crowder and Keelan Cole -- Berrios should be the priority because of his versatility. Even if the Jets retain one or more, they need to supplement the position with a draft pick or free agent. - - https://www.espn.com/blog/new-york-jets/post/_/id/88419/new-york-jets-mekhi-becton-est-370-pounds-big-question-mark -
One of the biggest NFL stories of the past few months doesn't directly involve the league at all. The latest escalation in the endless cycle of college football coaching changes has done more than take a possible pro coach off the NFL's radar for years to come. The deals being handed out to the most desirable coaches in college football are likely going to force the NFL to adapt or get left behind. The old belief that an NFL head-coaching job is the pinnacle of the coaching profession might no longer be the case, and what happens next could have a serious effect on how teams build their organizations and plan their futures. Let's start with the facts. First, Lincoln Riley signed a still-undisclosed contract to leave Oklahoma for USC. Next, Brian Kelly left Notre Dame for LSU, signing a 10-year, $95 million deal with additional incentives bringing the maximum value of the deal north of nine figures. Finally, Mario Cristobal decided to leave Oregon and head to Miami on a deal worth at least $8 million per year.Throw in the 10-year, $95 million contract former Jaguars assistant Mel Tucker signed with Michigan State, and the 10-year, $85 million extension James Franklin inked at Penn State in November, and you have a shifting landscape at the top of the college football market. Sure, it was one thing if Nick Saban or Dabo Swinney had contracts in that range, but we've seen five huge contracts handed out in a matter of months to coaches who haven't won national titles. Deals in this range are now the going rate for splashy hires at the college level. Shortly after Riley left for USC, ESPN's Adam Schefter tweeted that Oklahoma had targeted Cardinals coach Kliff Kingsbury as a possible replacement. The Sooners ended up hiring Clemson defensive coordinator Brent Venables, but think about what that implies. Oklahoma felt like it had a reasonable chance at hiring the coach of the NFL team with the best record in the league (9-2 at the time) and a viable shot at making it to the Super Bowl. When was the last time that was the case ? Twenty years ago, there wouldn't have been any realistic chance of the coach of a great team leaving for a college job. Now, under the landscape of these new deals, a very good college opening might be enough to keep an NFL owner awake at night. Let's compare how a top-tier college opportunity might measure up to the range of NFL coaching jobs in a few key categories, and how the recent college contract boom could change the pro ranks:... - - https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/32821569/how-rising-college-football-head-coach-salaries-force-nfl-adapt-get-left-behind

Alot has gone wrong for the Jets in 2021. The defense is bad, the offense isn’t consistent, injuries have hit hard and the team will finish with its sixth-consecutive losing season, the longest active streak in the league. Some of this was unavoidable, as the Jets have one of the youngest teams in the league and a brand-new coaching staff. Injuries at key positions are impossible to predict, as well. But there were choices that directly affected how the Jets performed this season. Some of that is Joe Douglas’ fault, while coaches and players deserve blame elsewhere. The Jets were never supposed to be true competitors in 2021, though, and now the entire team knows what needs to be fixed over the final five games before the 2022 offseason. The organization also knows what mistakes not to make. Here are seven that the Jets probably regret right now... - - https://jetswire.usatoday.com/lists/new-york-jets-decisions-team-probably-regrets-corey-davis/
