Johnson was one of many players who checked out under Bowles and Rodgers. Hopefully under Gase and Williams checking out won't be an option.

slats got a reaction from flgreen in Why Gase didn't get an interview with Denver, and does it matter?
Remember when Gase called an onsides kick against Denver when his team was up by 20 with just a few minutes left in the game because he still held a grudge against "someone" in the organization? Elway does. Maybe he just knew that Gase would tell him to f*** off. Or maybe he was still pissed off enough not to bother. Either way, it definitely seems like a decision that was far more personal than professional.

If Mac had a big hand in the hiring of Gase, and Gase now reports to Mac, I give the whole organization two years to become a genuine contender or they're all fired.

If you've read more than one post from me on the subject, you know I'm supportive of the hire. That said, each of the coaches you've named here was/is an actual head coach, not an OC with a head coach title. This, combined with both the GM and HC individually reporting to the owner, just seems like a very weak structure.
So I'm left to hope that Gase gets the most out of Darnold and/or grows as a head coach.

I don't like it. I prefer a CEO-type head coach. My hope here is that Gase is that good with QBs, and Darnold does get developed the right way. Then, if the wins aren't coming, a well developed Darnold attracts an even better coach down the line.
I've read that Williams is negotiating a 3-year deal, which seems odd (not that I've seen the terms of Gase's deal, yet, but I'd expect four years, at least). Do they expect Gase to grow on the job and become more of that CEO?

You beat me by three minutes. Lol.
More of an overview than an "inside story." Only real news is that they started the search at the bye, which is pretty much when we all knew Bowles' days were numbered, and that Bowles was informed weeks before the end of the season that he was going to be fired.

Gase's "franchise QB" in Miami was Ryan Tannehill, and he coached half his time there with Tannehill out of the lineup. Every year, the Jets fans on this board looked at the talent on the fish and penciled in two wins for the Jets but, instead, Gase went 5-1 against the Jets. IMHO, he overachieved there.

If so, it does a poor job. It spells out pretty clearly that they were big fans of Monken and that they pitched him to at least Rhule (and probably the "older" McCarthy, too). I think it tries to be pretty impartial. The Jets can't love having it revealed that they started their search before firing Bowles.

It's not that it impressed me, just citing it as an example. I don't think anyone, anywhere thought of Gase's fish teams as talented - that's really all I'm saying here. I could say the same for Bowles, too, actually, but those fish teams won more games than I expected them to.
To be clear: I don't like the Jets ownership or the GM they chose to retain and Gase wasn't my first choice for head coach, but this is what I've got and I'm willing to let it play out here before I crap all over it. Gase was the hot offensive name three years ago. In Miami, he was given personnel control while he was still learning on the job how to be a head coach. Could be there was too much on his plate. I don't think he went from genius to idiot in three years. Here it looks like he'll be the OC/QB coach kinda overseeing the team with a head coach of the defense autonomously running that side of the ball. Again, not my favorite way to run a football team, but maybe that gets the team the best of what Gase has to offer.
Betting against this team is easy. I wholeheartedly get why people do it. But I'm a glass-half-full kinda guy until I recognize for certain that the glass is empty. I also go thru the stages of grief with this team quickly and found myself at the acceptance stage in very short order. It is what it is and if I haven't decided to just give up on this team (which I've already done with every other major sport), then I might as well try to enjoy it.
