  1. I've voiced by opinion on Gholston's inconsistent play, but I do think he has the ability to be a Merriman-esque playmaker at OLB. Assuming McFadden and the Long boys are off the board, is Gholston your favorite for our 1st round selection? We need a playmaking passrusher and it's likely we won't sign a guy like Suggs in fee agency. I like Derrick Harvey but there are major questions as to whether he could play OLB in a 3-4 scheme and many would consider him a reach at #6.

  3. This is a quality hiring if you ask me. Callahan may have never shined as a HC but his credentials and reputation as an O-line coach/offensive coordinator are top notch. Bringing him in should go a long way in improving the O-line and running game. And if Schotty leaves sometime in the near future, we have a suitable candidate for OC already on the staff.
  4. Both Oher and Long, if one is on the board when we pick, could be the BPA at our selection. Both are Top 5 material.
  5. With Michael Oher declaring, this years crop at OT just got even stronger. Now my question is, would you be willing to go OT with our pick at #6? Jake Long and Michael Oher translate as dominant tackles at the next level. Both are Top 5 talents and either could immediately step in and be a drastic upgrade over Anthony Clement. I know a lot of fans are against drafting another O-lineman in round 1, but it's the weakest unit on our team. Not to mention that either Oher or Long could be the BPA at our spot. Thoughts?

  8. Dude, this current front office drafts better than anyone we've had since the 80's. Go and look at the drafts of the Herm and Parcells days if you don't believe me. And honestly, we're not going to be hurting that badly if Clemens turns out to be a bust. He's a former 2nd round pick making less than most backups. We don't have a lot of money or commitment tied into Kellen Clemens. Brick and Mangold are both quality starters along the O-line. Harris and Revis are both young studs on defense. Leon Washington is one of the most dynamic returnmen in the NFL. I'd say that's a pretty nice haul over a two year time period.
  9. One starter? Brick, Mangold, Clemens, Harris, and Revis. That's five. How the hell can you sit there and say Mangini and Tannenbaum don't know what their doing in the draft? The two tradeups they pulled last year have turned out to be fried gold. I think we can all agree that both Harris and Revis will be huge cornerstones on our defense for years to come.
  10. Harris had a total of 15 tackles heading into week 8. That means he registered 111 tackles, 5.5 sacks, 2 FF's, and 1 FR over the last half of the season. If that isn't fantastic I don't know what is. Harris doesn't help the team by replacing Vilma? I saw a noticable improvement in our run defense and our amount of stops behind the line since the change was made. In the 4-3, Jonathan Vilma is a borderline pro-bowler. In the 3-4, he's borderline dogsh*t. Those are the the facts. I suggest you go back and watch the games if you believe otherwise.
  11. And who are your sources proclaiming Vilma would catch a 1st round pick? Let's see, a guy who hasn't been a playmaker since 2004 and just had his season ended by a serious knee injury. Yeah, I'm sure teams are just lining up everywhere flashing those 1st round picks.
  12. 126 tackles, 5.5 sacks, 2 FF's, 1 FR Harris managed to put up those numbers despite not starting until week 8. I'd say that's pro-bowl caliber play. David Harris has given me no reason whatsoever to believe he won't continue to mature into his role and elevate his game to an even further level. Meanwhile, we've seen what Vilma can do in the very same sheme, behind the very same D-line, with the very same surrounding cast of players. The difference in production between Vilma and Harris is as big as the Grand Canyon. Harris has managed to make atleast one jaw dropping play in every game I've seen him play this year. I haven't seen one from Vilma since his rookie season.
  13. How many excuses will Vilma fans make for the guy? You always hear that Vilma's troubles are because of the D-line. Really? You mean the same D-line a rookie 2nd round pick has managed to have a pro-bowl caliber season behind? Vilma's problems are he's too weak and small to play in this scheme. That's where it is. It's as simple as that. It's no different than when Parcells traded Hugh Douglas after his DROY season because he didn't fit the 3-4 scheme. When I watch Harris play, I see a guy with a killer insinct and the keen ability to shed blockers. He attacks the ballcarrier and holds his own. When I watch Vilma in this scheme, I see a player who constanty gets engulfed by opposing O-linemen and looks totally out of place. Are the Ray Lewis comparisons still being thrown around? Are some of you guys actually comparing a guy who has one very good season under his belt to a guy who will be a HOFer and ultimately known as one of the Top 5 players at his position all-time? Please. What is the use in bringing Vilma back, him having another lackluster season, then departing when free agency hits while we get nothing in return? The kid is coming off a season ending knee injury and has been out of place for the past 2 years. You're not going to get a 1st or 2nd round pick in return for him.
  14. Why? If we add Suggs and Gholston to the starting LB corps, I think we can get by with Kassel playing next to Harris atleast until Moffitt develops.
  15. Trades LB Jonathan Vilma to Denver for their 2008 3rd round pick QB Chad Pennington to Kansas City for their 2008 4th round pick Free Agent Signings OLB Terrell Suggs The Jets will have the money to target atleast one high profile free agent. It might as well be Suggs. A 25 year old elite passrusher who would be an ideal fit at 3-4 OLB. OG Jacob Bell Jacob has really elevated his game with the Titans this year and looks to be a stud up-and-coming OG. Well rounded both as a run blocker and pass protector. A younger, cheaper alternative to Alan Faneca. CB Randall Gay Revis looks to be a stud CB for years to come but we still have a gaping hole on the opposite side. The Jets were interested in Gay before the season started and he has past ties with Mangini. A very solid #2 option. QB Josh McCown With Chad being traded to KC, the Jets will need to find a suitable option to give Clemens a little competition in training camp. McCown has a big arm and the standard build of an NFL QB. A very solid backup. RB T.J. Duckett Duckett would be the ideal guy to be our goaline/short yardage back. Another guy who the Jets have shown previous interest in and would come at a very cheap price. 6'0 260 and was a monster in the redzone when he played for Atlanta. 17. Was Leonard Davis even worth Leonard Davis money before this year? No Faneca is a multi pro-bowler who is a dominant run blocker and known as a team leader. He's the exact type of guy you'd want to stick between Brick and Mangold for the next 3-5 years. The guys track record speaks for itself. And what is it with this wide consensus that Faneca has lost a step? I just watched him manhandle John Henderson (arguably the best DT in football)last week. I'm more than willing to make Faneca the highest paid OG in the NFL if that's what it takes to get him here. We're gonna have plenty of coin to spend in free agency and the O-line is in dire need to be upgraded.

  20. Who do you suggest that would be an upgrade? I want a dominating 6'2 340 NT just as much as the next guy. But where either in free agency or the draft is this kind of player? The only solid 3-4 NT that comes to mind in free agency is Isaac Sopoaga from the Niners. He's a solid rotational guy but not starter material. In the draft there are some late round projects like Frank Morton and Richard Clebert but there are no dominating early round candidates that could immediately start from day one. I don't think there's any question that we'll just have to deal with D-Rob for yet another season. What other choice do we have? The best thing we can do in the meantime is beef up the DE position with a guy like Kelly (6'6 305).
  21. Jets end the season at 4-12 and pick in the 5-8 range of the draft. Trades LB Jonathan Vilma and a 5th round pick to Cincy for a 2008 2nd round pick. QB Chad Pennington to Minnesota for a 2008 4th round pick. Free Agent Signings OG Alan Faneca Adrien Clarke is completely worthless and Brick and Mangold won't ever live up to their billing until we get a quality LG to play between them. Faneca is a pro-bowler 5 years running and is still in the prime of his career (he'll only be 31 next season). I think he still has 2-3 years of all pro play left in him and probably another 3-4 years or quality play after that. I don't see this guy suddenly hitting a wall anytime soon. Next to Hutchinson, he's arguably the best OG in league. The difference between a guy like Faneca and Clarke is enormous. WR Bryant Johnson Arizona is stacked with Fitz and Boldin and Johnson is denied a lot of oppurtunies as a result. He is a tremendous upgrade over McCareins, Smith, etc. and would immediately upgrade the passing attack as well as the weapons at Kellen's disposal. CB Drayton Florence Here is a nice, cheaper alternative to signing Asante Samuel for huge bucks. Florence has steadily been a very solid starter the past two years in San Diego. He's a young guy with plenty of speed at the position. A starting corner lineup of Revis and Florence with Dyson in the nickel doesn't sound bad. DE Tommy Kelly The Jet need more quality bigmen in the trenches so we sign Kelly who already has experience in the 3-4. He can hold his gaps and has flashed monstous ability against the run. A solid rusher form the 3-4 end positionbut nothing great. A solid starter at 3-4 DE. Mock Draft (4 Rounds) 1st round: OLB Vernon Gholston - Ohio State With the Jets picking around #7, Chris Long and McFadden are off the board so they go with the playmaking Gholston out of Ohio State. The guy is a terror off the edge and freakishly strong. Has ideal size for the position at 6'4 265 and could form a deadly LB corps with David Harris 2nd round: OT Jeff Otah - Pittsburgh Anthony Clement could very well be the worst starting RT in football so the Jets nab his immediate replacement in round 2. Jeff Otah is your classic mauler on the offensive line. 6'6 340 and is flatout dominant in the running game. He kind of reminds me of Blalock last year but a much better suit for RT at the next level instead of OG. 2nd round: WR Jordy Nelson - Kansas State Let's face it, we aren't as strong at receiver as we initially thought. Coles is getting long in the tooth and becoming more injury prone every year. Cotchery is basically the only long term fix at WR on this team. Nelson would provide us with a sure handed, sizeable player out of the slot. 3rd round: ILB Ben Moffitt - South Florida Vilma is as good as gone and Hobson is set to hit the free agent market. The Jets need to find a guy who they can pair with David Harris on the inside. Moffitt has been an inspirational part os South Florida's success this year. Very stout against the run and can shed blockers. Kind of a poor mans Lauriniaitis. Eric Barton remains the starter for another year and then Moffitt gets inserted into the starting lineup in '09. 4th round: DE Nick Hayden - Wisconsin The Jets continue to add depth to the D-line in round 4. Hayden isn't a star by any means, but he's a very good two gapper who can get penetration from time to time and has great size (6'5 305). Has a very high motor and is the classic Mangini player. 4th round: OG Kerry Brown - Appalachian State With the signing of Faneca and the drafting of Jeff Otah, the Jets take a project guard in the mid rounds to surplant Brandon Moore as the starter at RG in the future. Brown is a solid all around OG with great size (6'6 310) and plays with a mean streak. 2008 Starting Lineup QB Kellen Clemens RB Thomas Jones WR Laveranues Coles WR Jerricho Cotchery WR Bryant Johnson TE Chris Baker LT D'Brickashaw Ferguson LG Alan Faneca C Nick Mangold RG Brandon Moore RT Jeff Otah DE Shaun Ellis NT Dewayne Robertson DE Tommy Kelly/Kenyon Coleman OLB Vernon Gholston ILB David Harris ILB Eric Barton/Ben Moffitt OLB Bryan Thomas CB Darrelle Revis CB Drayton Florence FS Kerry Rhodes SS Eric Smith
  22. How can we upgrade the NT position? Much like last year, there are no solid NT's via the draft or free agency. It's looking like another year of Robertson in the middle. Atleast with Kelly we're adding a 310 pounder at DE and Gholston would be a beast at OLB. We'd be adding much needed talent AND size.
  23. Jets beat Miami and Kansas City ending the season at 4-12 picking in the 5-7 range. Trades LB Jonathan Vilma and a 6th round pick to Baltimore for a 2008 2nd round pick Chad Pennington to Minnesota for a 2008 5th round pick Free Agent Signings OG Stacy Andrews WR D.J.
