i know most beleive that the 1998 jets were the best team put together to win a super bowl.i always dissagreed beleiving that the next year, the 1999 squad, was the best product the jets ever put on the field.they were super bowl bound for sure.then testaverde goes down in game one.i always muther****ed parcells, and hated him ever since, for not having a competant back up qb.anybody besides mirer would have gotten the jets to the super bowl that year.hell,if they started lucas 2 games sooner,i beleive, the jets win the super bowl.that 1999 team was that solid

is tanny making the same mistake as parcells?lets face it.brunell is completely done.mentor?yes. can he still play? absolutely not.i like this mcelroy kid, but he wont get the job done if sanchez goes down. as of right now,if sanchez gets injured for any length of time, the season is done. i wish they would bring in a legitimate back up qb

What makes you so sure Brunell can't play?

Damn y9ou win.

I was sitting here the other night thinking what a limited shot the Jets have at a Super Bowl. Real good team.

I was on here wondering who would bring up 1999.

You win :toot:

Last year? Really?

So you don't think a 3 time Pro Bowl QB can play anymore based on a dozen throws he made in small portions of 2 games as a backup?

OK.

really???? you didnt watch pre season last year? i think it was a scouch more than a dozen throws. his pro bowl and productive years are well behind him.besides, how old is he? 38 or 39? are you just ****in with me? ha ha i get it

Obviously his best years are behind him but that doesn't mean he can't be an adequate backup, especially short term for a few games if he had to.

The reality is that if the starting QB on any team gets hurt for an extended period of time and the backup has to finish a season, it usually doesn't end well for the team, with very few exceptions.

You might be right, but I wouldn't base it on what happened in last year's pre-season.

Bottom line is if he's on the roster when the season starts, then Rex and the staff think he can gice the team what it needs, and since they see the guy in practice every day and I don't, I'll trust they make the right decision.

Teams don't win Super Bowls with backup QBs. The 1999 Jets wouldn't have done it with different backups, and the 2011 Jets won't do it with Brunell or any other schmuck backup. Hell, at least half the starting QBs in the league aren't good enough to win one, nevermind any backups.

Exactly.

The backup QB argument is so absurd. No backup QB is beating the Pats, Steelers, or other top team in the AFC.

Also, Vinny was 36 years old in 1999 who suffered an achilles injury because of the horrible Meadowlands' turf and the fact that he was 36 yrs old. How is that remotely related to the Jets' 24 yr old QB???

I actually think the Jets could win with Brunell in there. The system they are still playing with is more or less a safety QB system. I think they feel that they can win with a player who avoids catastrophic mistakes and can read a defense well enough to recognize the blitz and make a hot read. Brunell should give them that. The others are right though, its very rare that wasting the time on a "solid" backup will pay off as playoff wins. More often than not there is a reason why the player is a backup. If anything the miracle backup is a relatively younger guy that shocks the world (Warner, Brady) when they come in and play.

That's the big difference. The Jets really should've been prepared for a 36 year old to get hurt.

I feel a little better with the 24 year old, it's no guarantee that he will stay healthy, but the chances are better.

But I disagree with you that you can't win with a solid backup.

That 99' team was so good they made Lucas look like a legit NFL QB, which we later found out he wasn't. If Parcells didn't waste so much time with Mirer throwing INT after INT, that team would've won it all I think. They just needed a QB who wouldn't make mistakes.

And no, Brunell is not a solid backup. He just hanging on at this point because he's broke.

The Greatest Show on Turf won the SB that year. Steve McNair in his prime went 13-3 that year and the Titans 14-2 with a probowl season from a young Brunell. A solid backup for the Jets wouldnt have gotten the team out of the divisional round.

Its all about the starter QB. This backup talk is just something to complain about.

Jason, good point bringing up Warner & Brady, 2 HOF caliber QBs.

The Ravens won with Dilfer.

Ok, so in the last 12 yrs it has shown us that you either need the greatest defense ever or HOF caliber backup QB to win with anything but the starter.

Matt Flynn is a great backup. Does HE win the Super Bowl last year? My money would have been on NO.

yep. you bring in backups with the top end expectation that they can lead the team to .500 for limited periods when the starter is out. in this league with the importance of first team reps there is no way any backup can come in and lead a team to a superbowl. only possible exceptions are guys who have the talent but are in a rehabilitation phase and thus are really bona fide first teamers. even then it's tough/impossible. if any team's first team guy goes on IR they are kaput.

nonsense. the jets with sanchez(clearly a lower tier qb on a very good team.he has upside, but he would be a back up qb on most teams till he hit that upside) has beaten,on the road mind you, rivers, palmer, brady, and manning.they are the who's who of the afc.not to mention that rapistburger was next on the list if any of the 53 guys on the jets showed up to play the first half

you seem to think sanchez is an ironman because he is 24 yo. the dude has been injured and has missed games because of injury.on any given play, his season could be over.just like any other nfl player.that is how it is "remotely related"

the greatest show on earth wasnt near the team when they aquired that nickname 2 years before.the titans were not the best team in the afc that year.they werent even the second best team.they got lucky as hell against buffalo, who imo, were the best team followed by the jets.anybody who paid attention to the 99 season and the parcells, testaverde, mirer fiasco and comes to the conclusion that the jets couldnt go all the way are delusional

We've got way bigger issues than who our backup QB is. Backup QBs don't win superbowls unless they are Tom Flukey I'm more worried about the offensive line at the moment. Like, are we going to waste money signing someone like McNabb to backup Sanchez? Besides we got McElroy.

as i am ,also.bad offensive line play= injured qb's.the jets need to pick up a 1 year rental backup qb and olimeman

Sorry, ylekram, but if you think the WC Bills team was the best team that year you are sadly mistaken. The Bills were an 11-5 team that year while the Jags were 14-2

You're delusional if you think the Jets could have gone all the way in 1999 with a solid backup. Vinny had an MVP caliber season in 1998 and was expected to continue. The Parcells fiasco kept the team from the payoffs, not the SB.

Also, don't misrepresent facts on Sanchez. He hasn't missed games, plural. He missed 1 game in 2 years. And he has outperformed his QB counterparts in postseason victories as a rookie and 2d year player.

i see google has supplied you with plenty of stats and you obviously werent watching football in 99 or just didnt pay attention.the bills were a wild card team because they started off slow and went on a roll.they were the best in the afc when the playoffs started.just like the jets.parcells descision to #1,take a flier on a bust like mirer, and #2 to start him for half a season when testaverde went down, cost the jets, imo,a super bowl run.the jets were a team of execution, and execute, they did.every one of their losses were due to horrible qb play.mirer threw multiple intereceptions per game and never threw a pass over 10 yards.on the other hand, lucas, went on to win 6 of 8 games just missing the playoffs and i beleive winning their last 4.and we see where lucas ended up after '99.

Um... dude, Jacksonville lost 3 games including the playoffs and they were all to the Titans. They dismantled Miami by around 60 points in the first round. They were like top 5 in the league on O and D. Their QB? Mark Brunell.

Now you're talking nonsense. I've been watching football for over 30 yrs, so don't come with this drivel that I wasn't watching football in 1999. Get real. You came up with a foolish analogy to 1999 and it doesn't pass the smell test.

As to the 99 Bills, you really have no clue what you're talking about. They started off slow? The Bills were 4-1. They went on a roll? When did that happen? Are you talking about finishing the season 4-2 to get to 11-5? You want to talk about a roll? The Titans (whom you claim the Bills were better than) went 10-2 down the stretch (with a 7-1 run). That's a ROLL. That 14-2 Jaguar team that led the NFL is record? The Jags went on a 12-1 run. Heck, the Colts won the division at 13-3 that year.

The Jets, without an MVP caliber season by Vinny (like he did in 1998) were not going on a SB run, let alone with a solid backup which they didn't have. Yes, Mirer's horrible QB play cost the Jets the playoffs, but not a SB run. The Jets of 1998 were more than a "team of execution". They were 5th in points scored and 2nd in points allowed, which is fantastic balance. The Jets weren't getting that balance with a solid backup. They needed Vinny to make plays.

Exactly. It seems that ylekram obviously wasn't watching football in 99.

The Jets, with a solid backup QB in 99, was losing in the divisional round. Vinny was the key to the SB run.

Well...not exactly. I guess it wasn't technically the first round because they lost to Tennessee in the Conference Championship. I guess they beat Miami in "the Divisional Round".
