Will Maybin make this Jets team?

Probably the one glaring question that we might see answered tonight. I'd say he's about 50-50. MacIntyre and Westerman both look decent enough to keep but Maybin has demonstrated the kind of speed rush we've been looking for and a sick first step the others can't match. Maybin has shown little to nothing anywhere else besides pass rusher so it will be interesting to watch tonight to see if he can provide anything at OLB or play specials.

I think Maybin makes the team, for the reasons Dominator states.

MacIntyre is serviceable, but he has no discernable high-end skill. Maybin, if he plays hard tonight and gets noticed (i.e., doesn't Gholston) he'll make it. I think the media drew wrong conclusions from Rex's comments.

I agree with this. To me, it seems more like Rex was trying to push Maybin to see how he responds. The guy has a skill-set our team severely lacks, but he's raw and is a little too light. I'm rooting for him to stay on and develop, because his one trick is something we can really use.

I think he's got a spot nearly locked up at this point. The fact is his competition isn't all that impressive and while there's certainly questions with him, there is unquestionably a high end of potential there with next to no risk involved to this team. The Jets could easily waive any other backup OLB than Westerman and all but guarantee they won't be going anywhere but the Jets PS, so its not like they'll be crippling themselves if after a few weeks they decide they need to make a switch. The Jets won't be able to count on him for much more than situational pass rushing at this point, but I don't think they really care to either. He could bring a speed to the Jets pass rush far beyond anyone else on this roster, and you have to give the kid credit that he's got one hell of a first step. Honestly, there's very little reason not to at least give him a shot for a few weeks in real games in pass rush situations.

That's what I thought, too.

Players picked that high don't bust out as quick as Maybin did in Buffalo very often. He really looks like he has something worth keeping in pass rush ability - and yet he has Gholston-like sack totals over his first two years in the league. They see him in practice everyday. Is he hungry? Is he a good teammate? Is he a lazy drunken dick? Because what he's flashed on the field so far, for a league minimum deal, seems like a no-brainer to hold onto over a guy like McIntyre.

He's gotta tear it up tonight against Philly's future UPS drivers, though. It might be a little humbling for him to be out there, but he has more to prove than most tonight.

maybin needs a danny woodhead like performance to make this team

I agree with this. He is really going to have to wow the CS. He was in for several plays Monday. Didn't do a whole lot, and he seemed to take himself out of a few plays by rushing wide, but he did have one good hustle play when he caught a play from behind. He needs a sack and some pressure tonight

he wasnt exactly "lighting it up" during the preseason, but he has shown to be very, very quick and gets around the lineman(sometimes alittle too far upfield) and for the life of me, i just dont see how this dude recorded zero sacks in 2 years. i dont get it

Maybin, IMO, will make the team. He knows how to pressure the QB. He just doesn't know how to get to him if that makes sense? Hopefully by next season he can put about 15-20 pounds and develop a spin move because tackles are pushing him totally out the play.

He doesn't take himself out of a few plays by rushing wide. He takes himself out of every play by rushing wide. Except when he makes the play. He will be useless as a shorter yardage pass rusher, but he seems perfect for what everybody has been squawking that the Jets need. I think he makes it though he is much more a luxury for situational use than an OLB.

Maybin had a good not great night and he's better than many of the LB including Satele and probably Bellore... but here's my problem with Maybin he only does 1 thing, pass rush, and he only has 1 move the speed rush. That's not enough to be the 8th LB. Garrett McIntyre, that dude is a blocker/gunner on punt team, he's on kickoff return, he's on kickoff coverage, the guy is everywhere. on defense he's very stout against the run, he's an ok pass rusher (not as good as Maybin) but if you look at the total package, Westoff needs guys like McIntyre he doesn't have much use for Maybin. If Maybin does make the team i don't know how he gets active. Westerman or Pace have to get hurt. It will be interesting to see what happens, I think he's clearly on the bubble and I don't know if Westoff will go to bat for him. Sure Rex likes him but Rex also likes Calvin Pace, Bryan Thomas and Jamaal Westerman way more. the backup to the backup has to be a Westoff guy.

I would be disappointed if Maybin does NOT make this team.

I think he provides more pressure than Westerman and any other player we have. Sticking him on 3rd & 10+ will be something we lacked last year. If he's not going to make a big impact this year, it will be the following year after he has a year in this system, puts on about 15-20 pounds, and finds a move he can use. Do I expect him to DeMarcus Ware or Wake? No, but I feel like he has more potential than nearly all of our OLBs and is worth keeping over the Pizza shop guy.

KEEP HIM!

All true, but he seems so obviously better as a speed rusher that they will use him on every 3rd and long. That might be enough. I watched last night's game twice and he was on the punt cover team at least once. He was noticeable but didn't do anything particularly good. Seemed to get down there pretty fast. FWIW, I saw Dan Depalma as the gunner on the punt team and he couldn't get off the line. He was considerably worse than Posey.

Maybin has the ability to disrupt the pocket... sack or not... he is so damn fast off the edge the QB has to keep an eye on him... which leaves Pace on the other side to get the sacks after Maybin flushes the QB out and over...

Haha! How could you watch that game twice?

Anyway, yeah - no reason they can't find places for Maybin on specials. Maybe he wasn't used there as the #11 overall in Buffalo, but there's no reason not to use him there as a league minimum flier here. He's fast and has a nose for the football. That would seem to work well on coverage teams. I think he has too much raw goods at a place of obvious need to give up on this quickly.

yea,i wouldnt give up on maybin.throw 20 pounds on him and teach him a coupla moves. he is really fast.again,i dont see how this dude did not record 1 sack in 2 years.blows my mind. with gholston,we had nothing. with maybin, i can see the light at the end of the tunnel. sometimes this happens when you draft a guy too high and too young

I can't see how Maybin doesn't make this team. The upside is no doubt there, and nobody else on the Jets roster has the potential he does as a pass rusher. Others have pointed out that his success has come against second teamers, but consider the fact that all of the guys he's competing with for spots and/or playing time have been facing those same exact second teamers and not doing a damn thing. He's an absolute low risk/high reward proposition for the Jets, and there's no reason not to at least give him a chance to see what he can do for this team in pass rushing situations in real games.

Well, he was on the Bills, who's defense was absolutely terrible last year. Worst running D in the league, 9th worst overall. Good job by Rex & Tanny picking out this guy out of the pack.

Of all the LB's on the bubble, Maybin is the only guy who has a potentially unique skill-set. I think he has teased enough in garbage time, so Rex will take a chance. I hope I am proven wrong, but I do not see him making even a few big plays if he sticks. Classic underachiever who is destined to build up hope, then disappoint.

They replay them on SNY right after. At least the ch4 games. It started at 11 so as soon as the Yankee game ended I put it on. I would have gone to sleep watching it, but I started charting Ducasse as best I could.

Maybin seems like he'd be a natural for coverage, but like I said other than witnessing him run around I didn't see him any evidence one way or the other. He looks like he is hustling. That much I will say for him and on the play where Young got hurt he looked like he was going to beat Young to the edge.

The upside is no doubt there

It really isn't. The guy has one move and he's not even average at it. Nothing he did last night would fly against starters and for the most part he was getting butterflied by backups last night. Absolutely no reason he belongs on this team. Yes, we need a pass rushing specialist. The problem is that he's not good at being a pass rushing specialist, and if a dude whose only talent is speed rushing hasn't capitalized on that by his 3rd year, there's no reason to believe that's going to be clicking any time soon. No chance he makes the team IMO.

I don't think we need a pass rush specialist, we have rushing specialists all over our defense, including Pace. Our style of defense creates rushing scenarios, which don't always favor OLBs. We have a large variety of blitz packages and Maybin will only help with this. We don't need Maybin to be better than everyone else. We just need him to do a decent job, so we can put him in in certain packages and give us a little more versatility with the potential of making a big play, or simply stepping in for starters when they are hurting. I mean, we're replacing Gholston with him, essentially, and that's already an upgrade. What's the worst that could happen? He sucks and he's gone next year? Even still it's way worth the risk, even if he only plays as a backup. Nobody's expecting this guy to be the next Clay Matthews, and nobody's saying this guy is the future of the Jets, but he's got potential and looks better than the previous guy we had.
