Jets begin cuts toward 53-man roster Published: Friday, September 02, 2011, 10:40 AM Updated: Friday, September 02, 2011, 11:54 AM By Jenny Vrentas/The Star-Ledger The Star-Ledger Follow

I know he's a longshot, but I want to keep Matthias Berning. He has the crazy eyes. You can't coach the crazy eyes.

Yep, I remember some jets fans screaming how they wanted Olshansky via FA. And man what a shame about Harris.

Perrish Cox may be a complete and total goon but he can play...

Cox is definitely going to jail for rape and he's guilty as all hell.

Some big names here...I thought Tate was going to turn into a draft steal for them too once he got healthy...

  • Despite two consecutive Pro Bowl appearances, S Brandon Meriweather was cut by the Patriots, who drafted him in the first round in 2007. New England also released WR Brandon Tate, one of the league's top kick returners.
  • The agent for Perrish Cox says the Denver Broncos have waived the struggling CB. Cox started nine times as a rookie and is facing a sexual assault case that is scheduled for trial this year. He has pleaded not guilty and is free on $50,000 bail.
  • The Bears cut RB Chester Taylor after signing him to a four-year, $12.5 million contract with $7 million guaranteed in 2010. He ran for just 267 yards while averaging a career-low 2.4 per carry.
  • The Cowboys cut DT Igor Olshansky, who signed a four-year free agent contract in 2009 and has started 28 games since.
  • The Denver Post reports that TE Dante Rosario has been released by the Broncos. Rosario was drafted by the Panthers in the fifth-round in 2007 and started for the bulk of four seasons.
  • After struggling with a knee injury during his bid to convert to safety, Brandon Underwood was released by the Packers.
  • The Tennessean reports that DE Jacob Ford and WR Justin Gage were both cut by the Titans. Gage had 12 TD catches in four years as a Titan. Ford started five games and had 42 tackles last year.
  • The Colts cut former Bears DT Tommie Harris, according to profootballtalk.com. Harris was a Pro Bowler in 2005, 2006 and 2007.
  • The Bengals released OG Max Jean-Gilles, according to profootballtalk.com. Jean-Giles started 10 games last year for the Eagles.
  • Belichick's Patriots cut RB Sammy Morris, who rushed for 727 yards and seven TDs last year.
  • The 49ers cut No. 3 QB Josh McCown, a starter with the Raiders in 2007 and the Cardinals in 2004.

interesting list.

the 2 that jump to me are Meriweather, but he would just be a luxury for us with our safeties. But just based on his talent alone I wouldn't mind taking a shot.

the 2nd is Gilles the guard. Been with Philly for awhile. He only fits in with ground and pound O's. He's huge, like 6'4 360. Really slow. But in the mold it seems like Tanny and Rex like. Like Ducasse and the guard from Pitt we tried to get a few years ago, Kemoeatu.

MJG is awful. Like Adrien Clarke awful. He's so slow in run-blocking and the only reason Philly hung on to him was because he had lap-band surgery to cure teh fatness. Didn't work. He took over when Nick Cole went down last year and was pretty, pretty, really bad.

I agree somewhat. He has been brutal. But he never fit in with Philly's style. He just needs to go out and maul people. Philly O needed quicker lineman.

But he might get Sanchez killed.

I liked his fatass coming out of Georgia too. Thought he'd be a true roadgrader... Duke Robinson is another.

At Georgia, sure. But if your feet are to slow too complete the simple tasks of pulling or switching off a tackle, you can't play in the NFL. Them's the rules.

The Bengals just cut him dude. Think about that. The Bengals. The Cincinnati Bengals.

What it all means: Lowery had been moved from CB to S last season, and apparently the Jets felt he was expendable given their depth in the secondary. You may recall he had game-clinching plays in back-to-back weeks last season in wins over Minnesota and Denver.

Schaluderaff was a sixth-round pick from Utah in the April draft. Rex Ryan indicated the Jets believe he could play center in a pinch if he had to. Remember, by waiving Felix, that leaves starter Nick Mangold as the only healthy C on the roster. Backup C-G Rob Turner still is rehabbing from surgery to fix a broken leg. Ryan also said LG Matt Slauson could slide over to C if Mangold got injured.

The Jets are going to be a little short-handed on their 53-man roster for a few weeks because of injuries. Turner, fifth WR Logan Payne [wrist] and third-string QB Greg McElroy [wrist] all have required surgery for injuries, and won’t be back for several weeks at least. None are being placed on IR, and Ryan said there are no plans to do so.

Pat Turner being cut means the Jets will begin the season with only four wideouts, starters Plaxico Burress and Santonio Holmes and third receiver Derrick Mason along with rookie Jeremy Kerley. Kerley also is the No. 3 QB at this time, according to Rex, but don’t expect that to be the case when the Jets line up against Dallas in eight days. I expect the Jets to get a veteran No. 3 somehow, and former Jets Kellen Clemens and Kevin O’Connell both were cut Saturday.

That means somebody at the back of the roster will be cut to make room for another QB. Candidates would include LBs Nick Bellore and Garrett McIntyre and S Emanuel Cook, although with Cook the Jets have 10 DBs, which is the number of DBs Ryan likes to have. LB Aaron Maybin isn’t on the fence anymore. Ryan said he was impressed with his play against the Eagles, when he had two sacks.

Ducasse was drafted to replace Woody... not Faneca.

Not according to a family member of mine that works in the Jets scouting department. He was to fill in for Faneca who had just been released. Woody was staying put and Slauson was depth. Ducasse would have been considered at tackle only after a season or two in the interior line.
