If you're going to be doing more heavy duty stuff like gaming/graphic design/video editing then that is different and the laptop you need would depend on what you need it to do. I wouldn't know off the top of my head. I will say that at that point you cant really go wrong whatever is on sale on newegg and has decent reviews. Cnet might have a recent article about it(they usually do) They're all pretty much the same at that point(assuming you take care of the laptop, people have a tendency to treat cheaper laptops like crap and complain when they give out.) You're not really going to tax it enough to see the difference. Look for things that are important to you at that point. Battery life/ weight/screen size/huge hard drive/processor speeds. This is the best advice on the Mac vs. PC ongoing debate. Mac's are a great product. I love them, and have used them for roughly the last 10 years. That said, I just bought a new laptop, and I got a PC. At the moment, my MacBook Pro still works, and so if I need to do any video editing, I still have it for FCP. Other than that, I just got a new PC of equal specs, for about 1500-1900 less than I was prepared to spend on a new mac. Do I like Mac OS better? Of course. But, a new computer, two months rent, and maybe 2 weeks to adjust vs a new computer just seems like an obvious choice when my usage will be mostly Office and the internet. If they insist on having an Apple product, then iPad + bluetooth keyboard is even a better option than an Apple computer for web browsing. Which is why I asked what he needs to use it for. Actually bought a Kensington bluetooth keyboard case for the iPad a few weeks back, best 65 bucks I've spent in a long time. I also discovered the wonders of their Pages app and also how convenient it is going paperless with PDF's on a tablet...I've been using my laptop less and less. Aside from basic word processing tasks, I really don't see the need for a top-of-the-line laptop anymore. If someone were ready to spend the type of money on what a Macbook costs, I'd recommend just spending half of that on a basic laptop, and the other half on a tablet of your preference. I don't even carry my Macbook around with me anymore, but I don't think a tablet is a complete replacement for a computer. Though that opinion may change once I see iCloud in action.
