What is the price range?

Are you looking for a middle of the road average Dell? ~ $1200-$1500

Alienware? More.

FalconNorthwest? AAAAAlllllooootttttt more.

Check NewEgg.com. They have a decent variety of laptops.

http://www.newegg.co...?SubCategory=32

Price range is 700-1000. Although i could go higher. I keep buying one every few years so i am not looking for something over long haul :)

It all really depends on what you need it for. Jetnation and youtube you can get by with a $500 laptop just fine. If you're going to be doing more heavy duty stuff like gaming/graphic design/video editing then that is different and the laptop you need would depend on what you need it to do. Is it just going to be a web browsing/internet porn/word processing rig?

Not to hijack, but what is the current reccommendation for $500 web browsing/internet porn/word processing rig?

I wouldn't know off the top of my head. I will say that at that point you cant really go wrong whatever is on sale on newegg and has decent reviews. Cnet might have a recent article about it(they usually do) They're all pretty much the same at that point(assuming you take care of the laptop, people have a tendency to treat cheaper laptops like crap and complain when they give out.) You're not really going to tax it enough to see the difference. Look for things that are important to you at that point. Battery life/ weight/screen size/huge hard drive/processor speeds.

SONY is a good option. Also look at the Toshibas in your price range. Don't let the Mac evangelists talk you into one of those. Too much money for too little computer.

Depends on what he wants to do with it - and how much time he wants to spend on upkeep.

What do you plan to do with said laptop? Give specifics, so we can avoid the trivial Mac vs. PC debate.

Mac is the way to go for several reasons.

1) You can run Mac and Windows

2) Better Hardware

3) Mac retains its resale value (my last one bought pre owned for $600, used it for 2 years and sold it for $600) You won't ever get that return on a PC laptop.

It is also way too expensive for someone who isn't going to see a difference in use. Unless they need it specifically for what Macs are good at. People who buy macs to fart around on the internet make no sense to me. Why over pay when you can get a machine that does what you need it to do for 40% of the price. Install linux and you're golden if you hate windows.

This is the best advice on the Mac vs. PC ongoing debate. Mac's are a great product. I love them, and have used them for roughly the last 10 years. That said, I just bought a new laptop, and I got a PC. At the moment, my MacBook Pro still works, and so if I need to do any video editing, I still have it for FCP. Other than that, I just got a new PC of equal specs, for about 1500-1900 less than I was prepared to spend on a new mac.

Do I like Mac OS better? Of course. But, a new computer, two months rent, and maybe 2 weeks to adjust vs a new computer just seems like an obvious choice when my usage will be mostly Office and the internet.

Totally agree with this. If they insist on having an Apple product, then iPad + bluetooth keyboard is even a better option than an Apple computer for web browsing.

Which is why I asked what he needs to use it for. I've been a Mac user for over 20 years, but never prescribe an Apple to someone unless it aligns with their needs.

is their a "MacFax" sight to make sure my used computer didn't fall into a bathtub and get repainted to hide the water damage?

Nice advice guys. I definitely think Sony sounds like a good option.

I have had a not so good experience with ThinkPads and Toshibas so far.

I bought a $350 Lenovo from Best Buy and am really happy with it!

Lenovo is a good solid choice..one of few laptops that doesnt 'feel' like u r typing on a 1 oz. plastic kiddie toy

What shocks me the most is that they are a player in the entry level laptop market. The chip prices made it possible I guess, but it does feel like a good quality unit.

Actually bought a Kensington bluetooth keyboard case for the iPad a few weeks back, best 65 bucks I've spent in a long time. I also discovered the wonders of their Pages app and also how convenient it is going paperless with PDF's on a tablet...I've been using my laptop less and less. Aside from basic word processing tasks, I really don't see the need for a top-of-the-line laptop anymore. If someone were ready to spend the type of money on what a Macbook costs, I'd recommend just spending half of that on a basic laptop, and the other half on a tablet of your preference. I don't even carry my Macbook around with me anymore, but I don't think a tablet is a complete replacement for a computer. Though that opinion may change once I see iCloud in action.
