Autumn Beers --- the best thing about the summer ending

Shipyard Pumpkinhead has been on the shelves for the past couple weeks, and is as good as ever!

Harpoon Oktoberfest has been better than usual this season... Sam Adams has been good as well.

What beers do you look forward to most this time of year?

Sam Adams has to be the most overrated beer of all time.

I'll have to try the Shipyard....however I find myself not liking the elitist beers as much as I should.

I agree with you on Sam whole-heartedly, their Oktoberfest is the only beer they make I will drink - and ONLY when I strike out on my first 3-4 requests.

Shipyard's got my favorite of the pumpkin beers, but depending on where you live there are quite a few good ones. Bluepoint Brewing company makes a decent one down on LI, had it a couple weeks ago when I was visiting home.

The best thing about moving to the Midwest is Great Lakes beer. Their Oktoberfest is pretty awesome and the Winter Lager is supposedly legendary. Guinness also recently put out a lager that is quite good. Newcastle Werewolf is a solid limited and I'd definitely recommend it if you come across it.

I've never been too big on pumpkin ales. However, one thing I would recommend is a nice little twist on an Irish Car Bomb called a Pumpkin Bomb; Goldschlager and Bailey's dropped into a pint of pumpkin ale. It's pretty effing good and this is the only time of year you can do them.

I think Sam is also on the overrated side also, but it depends. I think their summer beers are very good.

I love that Sam Adams is now big enough to have haters... lol

If it was called something else and you were told it was a small time operation you would be raving about it.

I think they're overrated because everyone seems to love them. I actually like the regular Sam the best out of all the specialty beers. I like summer ales, but I literally cant drink the Sam Summer.

Also, a small brewery- Captain Lawrence(brewed in my hometown) I don't like either....so its not me hating whats popular.

Regular Sam is a decent lager. It used to have more of a niche simply because the other lagers that are generally the best weren't widely available as they are now. I'll still have a Sam every now and then, but so many bars that you walk in to these days have a variety of imported and surprisingly excellent domestic stuff. The market's changed drastically since Sam hit it big. Not gonna lie though, I think my palette for seasonal beers came from trying out the different types of seasonal Sams when I first hit the legal age once upon a time. But it's hard to argue that there's simply better seasonals out there nowadays.

Not in my case, I usually don't rave about beers that go right though me.

Goose Island isn't too shabby either.

Agreed on the Boston Lager being a pretty decent 'regular' brew and the Summer being sh*tty. Same goes for the Coastal Wheat, which I thought was awful when I tried it. I think the Noble Pils is pretty good, unless you're some weirdo who doesn't like hops at all.

Overall, between the two major Boston breweries, I prefer Sam Adams to Harpoon, who I find to be terribly overrated. Their Leviathan line is good, but I find their IPA, hefeweizen and any other brews I've tried to be substandard.

I haven't had enough of their brews, but the tripel I had (Gold something-or-other) was pretty good and sneakily strong.

Sam Adams Oktoberfest in the beer of choice when i go to the Tilted Kilt in downtown Denver to watch JETS games. And its a very good beer.

Colorado being the haven of micro and small time breweries this is a fun time of the year.

If you ever are here or find those beers in your market try the 90 Shilling and Red Barrel Ale from O'Dells.

Sawtooth Ale and Oktoberfest from Left Hand Brewing. Left Hand Brewing beers are in so much demand around here that they gave up on selling it in other states because they could not fulfill the demand in Colorado.

Beers i want to try is the Shipyard Pumpkinhead. Sounds interesting.

Harpoon's Rich & Dan's IPA - the 100 barrel series they did over the summer was amazing.

Harpoon hands down for me, is better than Sam - but everyone has different tastes.

I'm talking about the stuff that's more readily available if you live outside of Boston/New England, not the one-offs - which they don't even give you when you do the tour/tasting there.

Brooklyn Brewery has some solid selections, but they aren't the only craft beer in Brooklyn. Any one have Sixpoint before?

Huge fan of Sixpoint... had no idea they started canning it though. I've gone to the brewery in the past to get sixtels for my kegerator since they cost half as much as getting it through a distributor.

Ah, gotcha... yeah, we have friends that work there. We get the good stuff when we go for a friends and family tasting night.

I don't think there actually is such a thing. You might be thinking of the Christmas Ale, which is spectacular.
