Anyone else picked it up today yet? Great compilation. I'm sure this topic runs the risk of spiraling into how good the original album is, but nevertheless if you grew up listening to it, it's a pretty incredible package. A lot of the stuff had been floating around online for a while, but it's still pretty awesome to have everything packaged together and remastered. The Studio Smart Sessions on Disc 2 are fantastic.

The Pixies disagree.

Meh, I don't know, Nirvana never made a song like, Here Comes Your Man. Pixies although I understand were a huge inspiration didn't make the same music imo. But I'll be honest I'm pretty fairweather Pixies, really only ever listened to Doolittle...but I don't really hear Nirvana in that album.

Pretty sure Cobain himself would even admit this. He's been quoted several times over that he was constantly trying to sound like the Pixies; and that he thought he always did a sh*t job because of how crappy a guitarist he was, and how awesome The Pixies were.

God you are dumb. JF80 said they practically invented a genre. I was pointing out how the Pixies (and there are other bands if you really want to go there) were the true influence of that sound. But they were just a much more diverse, unique and better band then all the bands that tried to sound like them. The Nirvana sound was clearly born out of there more edgy hardcore/punk influences like since you're familiar with Doolittle songs like Tame, Dead or Gouge Away.

Also I also disagree with your overall assessment of Nirvana's sound, while they diffidently had a little more raw of a sound, songs like Come As You Are, Mollys Lips, Son of a Gun, About A Girl are all out of the Pixies mold if you ask me besides the fact they wanted to sound like the Pixies...pretty much the reason they started playing.

Not exactly the reason they started playing, but most definitely the reason that Bleach sounds that much different from Nevermind and In Utero. No Surfer Rosa probably means no Nevermind.

my musical taste is stuck in 1968, but I can get into nirvana to a certain degree and all I really wanted to say in this thread is

where the hell did the last 20 years go ?

holy crap I remember when this came out and I was already out of college

Leave me alone, I was trying to really bring it home.

It's all pointless anyways. The comparison is so unfair. One of the main reasons as to why Nirvana remains such a remarkable story is that 2/3's of the band are really crappy musicians. Everyone knows that The Pixies are the sh*t and that Cobain worshiped them and tried endlessly to emulate their music, and failed from a technical standpoint. But to me, all of this is what makes the whole thing that much more awesome. The music still manages to kick so much a$$. They still managed to bring every single house down that they played. They still managed to have the greatest Unplugged set probably ever. They still managed to put out the quintessential album of the decade. They still have the most bizarre set of bootlegs and bootleg collectors for any band that's ever existed, composed of people trying to hear yet another horribly recorded version of Sliver or something. Even with Nevermind, when I listen to it 20 years later for the gajillionth time. Throw Breed on a good sound system, or the last minute or so of Lounge Act (where Grohl just totally goes berserk), and tell me it doesn't want to make you throw a chair through a window and text someone a picture of you giving them the finger.

At the risk of quoting myself, I'll just point out that the above is what makes buying this edition worth it. Hearing him toiling over this sh*t, actually enjoying himself, and tinkering it is pretty amazing. Puts the album in a totally different context than most usually do.

It's also the 20th anniversary of the album Ten. Which I'd rather listen to than Nevermind. Just personal taste.

That said, I'd also rather listen to the Foo Fighters than Nirvana as well.

I like a few Nirvana songs, but, really, pretty overrated.

And anyone who compares Nevermind with Appetite is crazy.

Yep. They even made Guns 'n' Roses look like the same old sh** of the glam rock era. And I like GNR.

Speaking of GNR we held a flight to Rio lasrt night for an hour because the band and their entourage were running late

Tix go on sale today for their Houston show in November -- Should be a fun night out.

Appetite was a more exciting listen on the first go-round because I was 8 and there was a sketch of a chick with her tit out on the inside of the cassette booklet.

Holy crap, you were only 8. I think i was a JR in high school when that came out

Nevermind is my favorite record but I don't really think this is worth owning. Live at Reading is definitive as far as the 91-92 tours, the boombox demos have been around forever and sound like sh*t anyway, and contrary to popular belief there never actually was a complete uncompressed mix of the album, so whatever alternate mix this is that's included in the 4x version isn't what people were expecting. I think they actually do have Albini's original master ready to roll for the In Utero reissue, so there's that, and there are worthwhile curiosities out there but they can be very, very hard to find and I think the intent is to let them remain so.

It's not worth owning if you're a big stupid dork. I hadn't heard the Smart Sessions before. Whatever, it's on Rhapsody so I didn't pay for it anyways.

Who is even part of GNR any more other than the lunatic lead singer? They are nominated for the Rock and Roll Hall of fame, and they figure to get in. But should be interesting who shows up for the ceremony.

Only point-kinda got away from comparing bands; it's pointless.Enjoy what you like. And I enjoy Nirvana, GNR and have come to like the Pixies, who I missed first time around.Dave Grohl seems like he gets that while Nirvana created a movement away from hair bands, he recognizes he is still basically a rock star. Albeit what a rock was in 1985 is not what it is today.
