MARTIN RACES PAST ANOTHER MILESTONE

By MARK CANNIZZARO

November 28, 2005 -- Curtis Martin eclipsed a historic milestone last night when he became only the fourth player in NFL history to reach the 14,000-yard rushing plateau.

Martin reached the milestone on his fourth carry of the Jets' 21-19 loss to the Saints, a 23-yard gain. He finished the night with 91 yards on 24 carries.

Martin entered the game needing 385 rushing yards in the Jets' final six games this season to become the first and only back in NFL history to rush for 1,000 yards in his first 11 seasons in the league.

Yet, despite all of this, Fox TV analyst Jimmy Johnson, while talking about prolific USC running back Reggie Bush and where he might go in the NFL draft, said matter-of-factly, "Curtis Martin is done."

Here was Johnson's full quote about Bush: "I think he's a great player and if he's not the first pick he'll be the second because a team might need to move up and take a quarterback. I'd love to see him go to Jacksonville because he would make an exciting duo with [Jaguars quarterback] Byron Leftwich, but the Jets need him the most because Curtis Martin is done."

Perhaps Johnson forgot that Martin won the NFL rushing title last season with 1,697 yards.

Maybe he hasn't noticed that Martin's Jets have used five quarterbacks this season and opposing defenses have had the luxury of stacking added players against the run.

Perhaps he doesn't realize that only one player on the Jets' offensive line
