Simms: Jets should go all in on Tim to get most out of him

By BRIAN COSTELLO

When Phil Simms heard Peyton Manning planned on signing with the Broncos, he started to think about landing spots for Tim Tebow.

“Jacksonville, Miami, Green Bay ... the Jets never even occurred to me,” Simms said. “It never entered my mind.”

Like most NFL observers, the former Giants great and CBS analyst is baffled by the Jets’ trade this week for Tebow to make him their backup quarterback and Wildcat specialist.

“I’m very, very surprised the Jets did it,” he said.

Simms has always been a Mark Sanchez supporter, and the trade left him wondering if the Jets wanted to make this move, why only go halfway? If you want Tebow, embrace everything that comes with him.

“If you’re going to go in, then hell, go all in,” Simms said. “How do you do this two ways? ‘We’re going to have a little package of plays.’ Then they should have never let Brad Smith go. I don’t know. I don’t see how you get the effect of Tebow unless you’re all in.”

Simms covered many of Tebow’s games last year for CBS. He believes what made Tebow effective can’t be replicated if he is only playing a handful of plays a game in the Wildcat.

“He’s still a quarterback,” Simms said. “He still needs the rhythm and the pacing of being in there and let it come to him and it happens. It’s not like ‘I’m going in there. I have five plays. I’m going to make five unbelievable plays and they’re going to work.’ That’s a dream world.”

The Jets hope Tebow can provide them with a wrinkle to the traditional Wildcat with his throwing ability. There is a hope he can hit a few big plays. But Simms said it is unrealistic to expect Tebow to sit on the bench for most of the game and then deliver a huge pass.

“It’s like saying to the shooting guard: Don’t shoot until the game is on the line and we want you to hit it,” he said.

Simms went through his own quarterback controversies with the Giants, early in his career with Scott Brunner and late with Jeff Hostetler. But those were typical competitions compared to what Sanchez faces with Tebow.

The 24-year-old is a phenomenon who brings a huge, vocal following with him. Simms saw this up close and wonders how it will affect Sanchez. Simms remembers a production meeting last year with Kyle Orton, who was then the Broncos starter. Orton answered all their Tebow questions, but Simms said it was evident they bothered him.

“It wears on the starting quarterback. This is just my perception. Kyle Orton didn’t tell me this,” Simms said. “When he left the room you could tell it was wearing him out. It just beats you up. It’s an assault that you can’t prepare yourself for.”

Simms wonders if the Jets realize just what they’ve bought into.

“The other big thing is his presence, his following and everything else,” he said. “I just don’t know if you can prepare or understand how big it is.”

Simms emphasized he does not want to sound as if he is knocking Sanchez.

But Simms said to get the full value of Tebow a team needs to give him playing time. In order to have a ball-control offense with fewer turnovers that gives the defense long breathers, it has to be Tebow Time all the time.

“You can only get that effect if you really do it over time or that’s your plan going into the game,” he said. “Sometimes it takes multiple games before you really start to see the effects.

“I don’t see how you go into situations like this and you go half way. It takes time to create that culture. You can’t do it with a couple of plays a game.”

* Tebow officially becomes a Jet today at 4 p.m. He re-signed his adjusted contract yesterday to clear up a technicality. The Jets will introduce Tebow at a press conference at their team headquarters on Monday at noon.

At first I thought the idea of bringing in Tebow for wildcat and goal-line situations while keeping Sanchez as the starter made sense. After hearing both Namath and Simms-two guys who know what it takes to play qb-I think I'm changing my mind. The situational thing probably isn't going to work, and Tebow can't pass well enough to do the job long-term as the starter.

It just amazes me how people are afraid of change which is understandable. The West coast offense changed how the game was played offensively and there were many critics at the time. The Jets are changing how their offense will be played - right now offenses are too dependent on one person - a great qb if you are lucky to have one. Maybe just maybe the Jets may change how the game is played... or ...............and I think it's great.

I have not weighed in on the Tebow mania because to be honest Im not sure I understand the Jets Logic . I do however fully understand Simms take on the situation. I think this would work if the Jets not only use Tebow in the wildcat but they use him in other situations as well. if they could get Tebow to be more of an H-Back....... I think Tebow would be open to learning new things and hes just the kind of personality to put the work in and give it a try. He always says he wants to do whatever it takes for the team to win maybe now is the time to test that statement. I think there are lots of ways he can be used with both him and Mark on the field lets see how innovative the Jets can get.

Also if Tebow is used in various ways and not just in the Wildcat it will direct some of the "Start Tebow" crap we are sure to see out of the equasion. This guy is a tough football player and thats what I admire about him.

I like this. I like to think this Dipsh*tty team is being innovative somehow, and honestly it's not completely crazy.

We all know he's coming here to start.

We trade up for Mr Hollywood that barely ever played in college. Now we go after the even shinier toy. Woody wants a star at the QB position. That's all this is.

If thats the case Matt, and i hope to god its not, this team is going off the freakin tracks. I know this was a woody decision but it does not mean we can stir things up a bit with how we play him

Of course its the case. Woody didnt watch Tebow play last year...he saw the 30 second highlights and the endless Sportscenter spots. Factor in the Gmen winning the Super Bowl, and this was a no brainer.

As a fan, I cannot wait for this disaster. Tebow embarrassing himself as a Jet and getting booed out of this city is going to be phenomenal

Thats what I want to avoid Matt I really hope it does not get to that point of Him getting booed and run out of town. There are productive ways we can handle this and not deal with all the possible stupidity if we handle it dreadfully worng.

All that being said and this may sound contradictory I agree with you this will probably turn into afull blown circus with Rex stirring the pot and tanny sh*tting the bed

We will not look good coming out of this, which is typical. We will be that villainous group of white trash fans that didn't appreciate the high character, hard nosed good Christian boy that Tebow is, and the front office will be accused of creating a desperate gimmick and will be vilified.

Idk if we are quite there YET.

We are going to be a medicore team even through the circus because we DO have some good players. This team can get back to Top tier pretty quickly if we draft good the next 2 years and fill holes with a few SMART FA signings. My guess is Tanny will continue to make a mess of this team and we will be stuck in mediocrity for a few years before we completely fall off the cliff. At that stage we will once again be looking for a Bill Parcells type to ressurrect the franchise if ones available. We are currently repeating history and right now we are in 1992 not 2012

I am not a Tebow basher, but IMO the reason for bringing him in is clear.............Woody still has a bunch of unsold PSL's.

You know what. I could have embraced this a lot more if they actual had like, some semblance of a plan. Like, if they cut Hunter and Sanchez, that would have been 11...ELEVEN MIILLION dollars saved and then you know, actually followed through with this ground and pound thing by signing Nicks, D.Bell & Martellus Bennett. Would help make the Tebow thing make a little more sense.

That absolutely makes sense if you have a real QB, one that is the unquestioned leader of the offense. Since we do not, this is doomed to fail.

What happens if the unthinkable happens? He actually has success with the jets and he makes them a better offensive team. Are you going to admit you were wrong?
