On Tebow and Other Topics, Jets’ Mangold Keeps It Light

Recommended Posts

Broncos receiver Eric Decker recently said in a radio interview that he appreciated and respected Tim Tebow as a teammate but added, “To be honest with you, it is nice just to kind of focus back on football.”

Although the Jets may not have that luxury this season, center Nick Mangold seems ready to supply some levity. As he says in his Twitterbio: ”I try to find the humor in everything while promoting the virtues of being manly. Enjoy!”

In an interview on NFL Network’s “NFL Total Access,” Mangold spoke about Tebow; Mark Sanchez, whom he has staunchly defended; the Olympian hurdler Lolo Jones, who, like Tebow, has spoken out against premarital sex;his Olympian sister, Holley, a weight lifter; Rex Ryan’s weight loss and wardrobe; and other topics

Almost all of it was delivered deadpan — the video link is here, and part of the transcript is below:

On if he was one of the guys in the locker room last week chanting ‘Tebow Time’:

“No. I was actually pushing for Tim and Lolo Jones to get united. My message kind of got lost in the ‘Tebow Time’ chanting.

On if Tim Tebow and Lolo Jones will get united:

“I don’t know. This is now my new goal, this is how I’m going to spend my spring. Usually I try to do a little golfing but that isn’t going so well. Now it’s matchmaking.”

On if he buys the belief that Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez can’t handle Tim Tebow being on the same team:

“I’ve seen Mark handle all kinds of things. From coming in here as a rookie to dealing with ‘hot dog-gate’ at the Raiders a couple of years ago, he’s held his own. I’m not too concerned about this new development. He’s going to be fine and he’s going to be a heck of a player for us.

On if Tim Tebow threw an interception during OTAs today:

“I have no idea. I’m kind of busy doing other things. Those 300-pound people across from me aren’t going to stop themselves.”

On if Jets head coach Rex Ryan will make another prediction this year:

“I predicted he’s going to continue talking about his weight loss.”

On how Rex Ryan looks after the weight loss:

“He looks fantastic because he’s losing the weight and everything, but he looks kind of ridiculous because I think he’s still wearing the same clothes and hasn’t gone out and gotten anything new. So it’s like he’s wearing a tent.”

On if he is going to take time off to travel to London to watch his sister, Holley, compete in the Olympics in weightlifting:

“God bless Rex because he did offer it to me, but I don’t think I can leave my guys in the middle of training camp. But we’ll figure out a way to watch and I’m real excited and real proud for her. Somehow, some way I’ll watch it, but I don’t know if I can do the jump over the pond in the middle of training camp.”

On if he can lift 319 pounds in the clean-and-jerk like his sister:

“I have no idea. I know I can lift more than her and will tell her that at any time. But I don’t think I’ve ever done a clean-and-jerk. As far as she knows, I can always outlift her.”

On who has softer hands – Mark Sanchez or Tim Tebow:

“That’s a tough call. They both seem to moisturize pretty well and take good care of themselves. I think we’ll really find out come the nitty and gritty of training camp when there is not a lot of time to really put in for personal hygiene and whatnot and see what they’re doing.”

Extra point Mangold seems to be enjoying himself, even when having his chest hair pulled off on late-night TV.
