Sanchez struggles; Jets defense dominates at mini-camp

3:43 PM, June 12, 2012 ι By BRIAN COSTELLO

Score another one for the defense.

On the first day of mini-camp, the Jets defense won the day just like they did last week in organized team activities. Starting quarterback Mark Sanchez had a particularly rough day, completing 2-of-9 passes during team drills with two near interceptions and three sacks. Backup Tim Tebow was better, going 5-for-9 with one sack and a nice touchdown pass to Dustin Keller.

It is understandable that the defense would be way ahead right now. The offense is still learning new offensive coordinator Tony Sparano's system and have a lot of injuries at wide receiver right now.

The two standouts in the practice were both newcomers. First-round pick Quinton Coples continues to impress. He was in the backfield a ton and is moving around the line. He sometimes lines up all the way outside like a linebacker and other times is over the guard or tackle. Wide receiver Chaz Schilens, signed as a free agent, had a strong practice. His top highlight came on a beautiful catch in the corner of the end zone from Sanchez in 7-on-7 drills. He leaped over cornerback Darrelle

Revis to make the catch.

Safety LaRon Landry did report for minicamp after missing a large chunk of the voluntary program. He did not practice, though, as he recovers from a foot injury.
