Red Sox deal Renteria to Braves for MarteESPN.com news services

The Braves and Red Sox have agreed on a deal that would ship shortstop Edgar Renteria to Atlanta in exchange for Braves third-base prospect Andy Marte, ESPN's Peter Gammons has learned.

An official announcement is expected in an hour.

The Red Sox signed Renteria to a four-year, $40 million deal as a free agent last offseason. But Renteria struggled in his first season in Boston, batting .276 with eight home runs and 70 RBI with just nine stolen bases. He had a career year with the Cardinals in 2003, batting .330, hitting 13 homers and driving in 100 runs. He also stole 34 bases.

Renteria will replace Rafael Furcal at shortstop for the Braves. Furcal finalized a three-year, $39 million deal with the Dodgers on Wednesday to become their shortstop.

Marte is rated as the top prospect in the Braves organization by Baseball America. Last season in Triple-A, he batted .275 with 20 homers and 74 RBI. In 9 at-bats with the Braves in 2005, he hit two homers and drove in six runs.

Being a Met fan I know Marte the 3b prospect Atlanta traded has gotten a big buildup for them. Interesting to see if he is good as they have been saying for Boston

You're right Faba. Apparently in Atlanta Marte wouldn't move off 3B(Chippers position) thus his availability.

Rotoworld has some high praise for this guy below.

10 or 15 years from now, this offseason could be remembered in Boston for the Marte acquisition, not the Josh Beckett pickup. The Braves were frustrated with the 22-year-old's unwillingness to move off third base, but the Red Sox won't have a problem keeping him there. He's not going to be a Gold Glover, but he should be able to remain at the position for at least the first half of his career, and he'll hit enough to be an All-Star in his prime. The Red Sox will probably send him to Triple-A for one more year and give him a starting job in 2007.

There is more to this Renetria debacle than meets the eye. Seriously, how does one go from Gold Glove to leading the majors in errors in one season? Was he hurt? Was he steriod sober this season? Was he a drunk? I mean, he looked drunk out there on the field. Interesting indeed. Now don't get me wrong - I'm glad he is gone. See-yah!

Fenway Infield . I think Jeter called it the toughest in the AL.

I can't see Nomar staying healthy if he plays full time in the inf.

Really homer007...you cant see it huh?

But let me guess, you CAN see Jason Giambi* returning to his 2001 MVP form right? Oh, and you cant imagine that he and Sheffield ever juiced up, correct?

But fat Manny...he definately is popping roids?

Please keep all Red Sox opinions to yourself!

Oh, and no way does Nomar come back, think Alex Gonzalez at SS or perhaps Loretta moving to SS though I personally hate the thought of that.

A source told the Boston Herald another team that was interested in Andy Marte turned away after the Braves acknowledged the player had a tear in the ulnar collateral ligament of an elbow.

A Red Sox official said the team reviewed his medical file and declared him healthy. If Marte has a tear in his UCL, he might someday need Tommy John surgery. It's not as big of a concern for him as it would be for a pitcher, but it could leave the Red Sox without his services for a year. Dec. 9 - 4:28 am et

Sox medical staff is starting to sound like our Jets crew between the lack of clear answers on Marte or Beckett's health.

I'll keep all Bosox opinions to myself if you keep all Yankee opinions to yourself.

Which means you will never post on these boards again.

Which will make 99.9% of the membership very happy. =D>

BTW - Giambi did show last year that he still has it. Nomar has been MIA for 2 seasons now. ANd he freely admits, through his agent, that he would play the OF. WHy? To stay healthy, have a solid season, and parlay that into 1 final multi year deal.

Anyone can see that. Except JBF, of course, who is blind to anything under the category of "common sense".
