According to Pro Football Weekly, the Panthers are running out of patience with RT Jeff Otah (knee).

Otah is owed $2.35 million in the final year of his rookie contract, and is coming off knee surgeries in the past two seasons. Per PFW's Dan Parr, there are "sources inside the organization" that aren't overly optimistic about his chances of returning to full health. Otah is expected to report for training camp, and will compete with Byron Bell for the starting right tackle job.

Here is the press release from the NY Jets:

Jets Acquire T Jeff Otah from Panthers

July 23, 2012 – The New York Jets have acquired T Jeff Otah in a trade with the Carolina Panthers for an undisclosed conditional draft choice. The announcement was made by General Manager Mike Tannenbaum.

Otah (T/6-6/340/Pittsburgh/New Castle, DE) initially entered the NFL as a first-round selection (19th overall) of the Panthers in 2008. In four seasons with Carolina, Otah started all 29 games that he played. Last season, he started four of the first five games before he was inactive at Atlanta (10/16/11) and placed on injured reserve with a knee injury (10/19/11). In his first two seasons, Otah started 25 of a possible 32 games at right tackle, helping the Panthers establish team-highs in rushing yards both seasons. In 2009, he blocked for running backs DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart as the pair became the first set of teammates in NFL history to each rush for more than 1,100 yards in the same season.

No sh*t. Certainly did not see that coming. Tough not to be happy about it considering it's a conditional pick. Worst case scenario it's a young player with a lot of upside (although obviously some health issues). If nothing else, at least the Jets are clearly putting some serious effort into bringing some real competition at OT this offseason. Whether it works out remains to be seen, but you've got to think they're helping their odds.

If the Jets doctors have a cure for soft, they have a steal. A lot of folks in the Panthers organization wondered if Otah cared anymore.

I don't really know Otah's story. Maybe one of our Carolina posters have the info?

Yeah, word is he's checked out. Still like the risk reward though. If he just needs a change of scenery and fire under his ass, I think he found the right place.

When healthy, the guy is a mauler.

Though, I think they said similar things about Big Jenk over there too...
