The spot was trouble for the Jets thanks to Wayne Hunter’s turnstile-like tendencies in the preseason and they were crossing their fingers that Howard would be able to do the job on Sunday against defensive end Mario Williams. The Bills big offseason acquisition was a total non-factor, leading Rex Ryan to praise Howard’s work. Williams wasn’t so forthcoming with compliments for Howard. Williams accused the Jets tackle of all manners of perfidy during the 48-28 victory and slammed the replacement officials for letting him get away with it. “Pass blocking doesn’t consist of illegal hands to the face just about every play, which, when somebody tells you that, and you’re five yards away from it, and you walk away like you don’t see him telling you you’re getting punched in the face every time, then that dictates somebody like myself having to take care of that on my own,” Williams said, via Mike Mazzeo of ESPNNewYork.com. “It’s not something that’s really going to dictate something, but what are you going to about it? You’re getting off the ball and getting punched in the face, literally — not by accident — just about every other time, and that’s a penalty, last time I checked, unless they changed it with the new CBA or something. Last time I checked, that’s a penalty.” It’ll take a close review of the 11-on-11 film to see how often Howard might have crossed the line while blocking Williams because he was never penalized nor did he ever get away with a miss so egregious that it registered over the course of the game. In general, the only reason you would have noticed a difference from past officiating is if you were actively thinking about it. There were no mishaps of note in the officiating, excluding Williams’ claims obviously. Even if he did get away with using illegal technique, it doesn’t explain Stephen Gilmore getting burnt by Stephen Hill for a touchdown, three Ryan Fitzpatrick interceptions and a total breakdown by the Bills on Jeremy Kerley’s 68-yard punt return for a touchdown. The Jets beat the Bills across the board on Sunday. The Bills and Jets meet again in the final week of the season when the original officials could be back on the job. He does realize that he is a $100 million free agent pro bowl guy playing against a UDFA journeyman who only played two weeks as a preseason starter right? Hands to the face or not, if you're a superstar DE, you still get to the QB. He has a few sacks shy of 100 for this career, something tells me he was held, hit in the face or something illegal on a handful of those. I was going to focus on Howard/Williams, but after I heard Williams's comment, I did not look at anything else other than this match up. On the very first play of the game (the quick out pass to Hill), Howard indeed smacked Williams right in the face. It certainly could have been called, but the quick pass to the other side of the field probably took the attention of the officials away. No big conspiracy there. After that, I saw one, possible two times where one of Howards hands came up to about the neck/chin level. Very incidental, not flagrant at all. The kind of stuff that happens somewhere along the line virtually every pass play and does not get called. Other than that, I was shocked. Howard completely dominated Williams (and whoever was lined up against him at different times). No holding, no punching in the face, no help from tight ends or running backs (occaisionally Moore slid over to help when he had no one over him and there were no blitzers to that side). Howard just textbook squared up and kicked Williams' azz. Beautiful technique and form. I thought Winston Hill was back wearing #77. I imagine the second half went the same way. After dominating Williams with great technique and skill, I can't believe Austin suddendly went dirty. I really think Austin punched Williams in the face on the first play on purpose. Just to get in his head. And it obviously worked. I can't explain how a practice squad player plays like a Pro Bowler in his first start. All I know is what I saw. It was simply incredible. Williams was paid like the best pass rusher in the game and hasnt had a double digit sack season in like 4 years. Plus he's weak vs the run. He was a small school guy and actually already started some games for the Eagles in 2010 including LT. I think he was getting play over Winston Justice who at various times people wanted us to get for RT. That's not saying much because Philly's Oline was horrid in 2010, but the guy got dumped at final cuts when Howard Mudd came in as the line coach. I think Mudd likes smaller finesse guys like he had on the Colts and expects more movement and complex schemes. This guy might be better suited to manning up and punching people in the face. Small school guys often take longer to develop because they haven't received much high level coaching and the guy also started at TE. I think we all shy away from these guys after the Adrien Clarke fiasco. Clarke had a similar - guy about to take the next step - resume and sucked. Plenty of these guys can play, you just can't count on them until you see them in the system against high level competition. IMO that means you can be very happy with a guy like Howard, you just don't want to start the season counting on him as your #1 option at RT. A few of the draft guys listed Howard as a small school sleeper - I think Bit and draftdaddy had him listed along with Ducasse and draftnasty mentioned him plenty too.
