jets defense on pace for a 16 sack season

Maybe this exacerbates the fact that we haven't been able to produce consistent pressure without blitzing in about a half of a decade. Granted Jenkins did have a pretty consistent interior pass-rush for the handful of games he was healthy; anyone remember that play, i believe against the texans center where he just batted him to the side like a rag doll?? Ahh good times.

Anyways, besides drafting an OG or two, I've been a proponent of going all in on the linebackers for a while as that's been the obvious achilles heel of our defense.

Clearly we need someone to generate pass rush from the OLB position, cut Thomas, restructure or cut and resign Pace for a team-friendly deal as he's not as bad as his contract makes you think, I call it the jared jeffries syndrome. Grab a new ILB if Davis isn't ready and then grab another OLB/ILB tweener who you can groom or just hopefully of them hits. We desperately need speed and impact from our backers and just aren't getting it. Everyone thinks our defense is terrible, which it is, but if you can get an Aldon Smith or Von Miller type of player, our defense will take a complete turn around in one season.

When Garrett McIntyre is your Sack Specialist...you have problems. The Jets team needs to be blown up. We need:

1) A New QB

2) A New RB

3) FAST OLBs (Especially if we play 3-4 defense)

4) Better OL...

16 sacks this season means the D coordinator loses his job...

The Jets have the components of a pass rush, but that has gotten them nowhere. Wilkerson is capable of beating a single blocker fairly easily, Coples obviously has his upside, McIntyre and Maybin (where is he?) bring some speed to the LBs, Pace is one of those stupid people who chooses to occupy the space between "terrible" and "great" that most don't care to distinguish, and even Thomas and Scott can be effective blitzers. I realize this isn't super loaded with a Ware, Ngata, and Willis/Bowman, but it's a group that can do better than one sack a game given the guys coaching them.

I don't know how to get them going or what they should do, but luckily that is not my job. All I can do as the super smart, insightful fan I am is seethe, call for heads to roll, mock them, or mock others until they do something that pleases me.

I would just hope Maybin loses 15-20 pounds he gained this off season and goes back to being the one trick pony where the one trick got him like 6 sacks. That would easily add some more to our sack total. For sure!

Ehh, he's doing the same thing, they were just all hustle and coverage sacks really. I don't think I really remember more than one play where he straight up beat his man to force the sack; it always seemed to come from design or hustle. Not that either are a bad thing, he's just not the guy who's going to be a clay matthews, aldon smith, von miller or hell even bruce irvin for ya and get consistent pressure. We've been dying for one of those guys for a handful of years now and just getting an OLB of that caliber and ILB with speed who can cover, this defense upgrades considerable.

The annoying thing here is that there don't seem to be any signal caller here worthy of the top pick and I'm afraid that all the top OLBs are going to be taken there. My dream scenario would be to land one of Jarvis Jones/Mingo in the first and then with a later pick grab a CJ Mosley/Jonathan brown to play inside next to either Harris or Davis. Use the rest on one or two of any of the top guards available; warmack, jones, cooper, warfard, uzzi etc. Obviously some of these guys will be gone, but that's just my general strategy for the draft.

What most likely will happen though is that we'll finish 8-8 or there around and miss out on the Mingo and Jarvis Jones and once again, never have that one guy who can create consistent pressure.

5-11 best case, a real GM ought to be able to find a gem in this slot

Should be able to. I mean from a talent standpoint, it was clear to everyone who watched Von Miller and Aldon Smith that they were going to be outstanding pass-rushers. Guys like Watt and Kerrigan scouts knew were going to be good players, but I don't know if many thought to this level. The fact that we were rumored to want Irvin does at least show me that we have an idea of what we're looking for, as he would have been a great fit. This defense, with getting Ellis and Coples another year under their belt, with a legit OLB threat, can actually become a damned good defense again. Just hope that Mingo, Jarvis and some of those guys fall.

And I dunno, we still play Indy, St Louis, Miami, Buffalo, Tennessee and Jacksonville, which are all winnable games. Not saying we will, but we'll be in all of them. My fear is that we once again go 8-8, miss the playoffs, but miss on anyone that can really turn the defense or offense around. I think the offense has some pieces and if you just invest in two top OGs, you'd see a marked difference in pretty much all aspects.

My statement was in part in jest.

And you are correct we need some linebackers. Our middle line backer looks like he is ready for AARP meetings!
