Is O'Connell try-out gathering up options for a Tebow trade?

I just saw the news on bringing in Kevin O'C for a tryout and was initially pissed at the seemingly non-existent role of Greg McElroy.

Dug a little deeper and found this which might make some sense - even though it's from Cimini

Does QB tryout affect Tebow?

An interesting name came across the NFL transactions wire Tuesday -- free-agent QB Kevin O'Connell, who worked out for the Jets.

Once upon a time -- September, 2009 -- the Jets traded for O'Connell, in part, because they opened against the Patriots and they wanted to pick his brain for Patriots intel. He was drafted by the Patriots and spent the previous year on their roster. It just so happens the Jets face their AFC East rival this week, but he's too far removed from that situation to be of any help.

So why would the Jets bring in O'Connell for a look-see? This is a player they've said goodbye to on three different occasions. Their depth chart is filled, with Mark Sanchez andTim Tebow and Greg McElroy So why?

Make no mistake, this wasn't random. GM Mike Tannenbaum isn't a random kind of guy; there had to be a reason. Which raises a question: With the trading deadline only two weeks away, is there a chance the Jets could trade Tebow and make Greg McElroy the No. 2?

Rex Ryan already is on record as saying the Wildcat hasn't been as successful as he expected. There also have been rumblings that Tebow is frustrated by his smaller-than-anticipated role. The man has played only 50 offensive snaps in six games, making more of an impact as a personal protector on the punt team than on offense. It has become quite clear that Ryan doesn't know how to use him or never wanted him in the first place.

I found it interesting that Patriots coach Bill Belichick delivered a virtual filibuster Tuesday on the value of Tebow, detailing all the different ways he's supposedly helping the Jets -- if only it were true. It almost seemed like Belichick was exaggerating Tebow's importance to tweak the Jets for under-utilizing him.

Obviously, they'd be admitting a colossal mistake by trading Tebow. Plus, we know owner Woody Johnson is a big Tebow fan. For those reasons, a trade is highly unlikely. Plus, who'd want him? Maybe we're reading too much into O'Connell's workout, but you have to know that everything happens for a reason inside the big building in Florham Park.

This is some pretty serious conjecture on Cimini's part without a whole lot to support it. It's just as likely (if not more so) that it could be a variety of other reasons, from them being unhappy with McElroy to them wanting somebody to throw to any offensive skill position players they may have been trying out or anything in between. It could have even been a matter of them considering filling the open PS spot with a QB but then figured they'd check in on O'Connell and if he was looking alright then they wouldn't bother. There's plenty of reasons and as much as I'd love for it to be true, there's very little evidence to support the idea that they're going to send away a guy they just traded for 7 months ago.

I think it's a total crock of sh*t. Cimini is really stretching here. Tannenbaum isn't a random kind of guy? Have you seen a list of the guys the Jets have had in for a tryout? I'm surprised they didn't have Marky Mark in here for one.

O'Connell is a guy they obviously liked coming out that year. He had an arm injury which kept him out for a year. It makes sense to see what he's got.

As for Tebow, yes the wildcat hasn't been as successful as we'd hoped. It's been worse than it was with LT, with Leon. Hell, it's been worse than it was with McKnight or Greene. On the other hand, so has the entire running game. I think Tebow is providing a hell of a lot of production for a backup QB. He's gotten us several first downs. He's certainly done more than Mark Brunell and Clemens did on a week to week basis.

I guess that's what give me some hope that McE isn't just total garbage and will be outta here at the first chance. You'd like to think that Cimini actually spends some time around the team and maybe even has a distant finger on any pulse of the team that may exist.

I think they brought O'Connell in this week to tweak Bellichek and McDaniels.

O'Connell may have been gone for a while but the terminology is likely still the same. This was just designed to force the Pats to spend a little more time in practice working in some new terms. Total bs and will have no impact on the game.

O'Connell is physically superior to McElroy. He is probably physically better than the other two also. He is a big, fast kid with a strong arm.

Compares To: MATT CASSEL-New England...O'Connell is a more mobile passer, but like Cassel, he is going to need time and patient coaching to add technique and mechanical refinement. He is a rare-sized athlete with great mobility in the pocket, but his delivery is a mess and his footwork leaves a lot to be desired. He forces a lot of throws and needs generate better touch on his short-area throws and improve the zip on his deep passes. If a team preaches patience and has an established veteran in place to allow O'Connell several years to develop, he could be a good one. Rushing him, however, might render any pick used on O'Connell a wasted selection.

The Jets have put three years in on this kid. If he gains consistency he has the upside to be a serious QB. Of course we are all horrified about hearing about "poor accuracy", but hey, he's free!

I'm all about Tebow hanging out here - so long as it's in a special weapon role or an emergency, all snaps, QB. If Sanchez can get his little melon slowed down a lot more and becomes the attack QB that he could be, or we get a QB that can run an offense - Tebow throws a lot of potential wrinkles into opposing game plans. If Tebow's fine with that role and the press accepts it and S'sTFU about it - I'm fine with Timmy T retiring here.

Well, the press is never going to accept it or STFU about it, so you'll never be fine with it. I think we have a fair chance of getting the rest. Maybe not that Sanchez getting his melon slowed down, but the sh*t about Tebow. FWIW, O'Connell has been with the Dolphins, Pats and Chargers and that is four of our remaining ten games. I doubt he has information of any value for anybody but the Chargers who we play near the end of the year.
