Ryan: Belichick 'best coach in league'

Maybe Tim Tebow is rubbing off on Rex Ryan.

The usually blustery Jets coach sounded unusually humble Wednesday when discussing Gang Green's upcoming game against AFC East blood rival New England.

Ryan called the Patriots’ Bill Belichick “the best coach in the league’’ – though he didn't concede anything in the teams' Sunday showdown in New England.

“[if] it was just between Belichick and me, he’s going to win, no doubt,” Ryan said at his Wednesday news conference in Florham Park, N.J.

“I recognize that. But it’s not going to be by lack of effort on my part. He’s going to get everything I’ve got.”

When Ryan was hired by the Jets in 2009, he famously said he did not intend to “kiss Belichick’s rings” – a comment that rankled Belichick and created a distinct frost between the two that’s only gotten frostier over the years.

Since then, the numbers back up Ryan's unusual modesty. He is 3-4 against Belichick, who has won three Super Bowls to Ryan’s none.

“When I look at him, I see him as the best coach in the league,” Ryan said. “Maybe if he has his struggles one day, he’s sick, who knows, I get him."

Ryan also said Belichick's accomplishments are something to which he aspires.

“The way I look at it as, you want to compete against the very best,'' Ryan said. "Maybe I’m crazy, whatever, it’s maybe not even debatable, but I have dreams about what I want to achieve, and I want to compete against the very best.

“I don’t want to compete against someone down here, but I want to compete against the guy up here. That’s where I want to get one day, and if I eventually get there, that’d be great. Then maybe people would want to compete against me the same way. That would be terrific.”

Both teams are 3-3, with Ryan’s Jets coming off a 35-9 win over the Colts and Belichick’s coming off a 24-23 loss to the Seahawks.

He may have said he won't kiss his rings but he has always heaped praise on BB.

Outside of the obvious that many have already pointed out, which that Rex has endlessly praised Belichick since he's been here, my other question is where is this nonsense coming from that apparently there is some great rift between them? There's been past reports that the two have known each other for a while from back in the days when Rob was coaching under Beli on the Pats and that they get along just fine. There's never been any particular issues between the two of them on the field or in any PCs either. This isn't Mangini we're talking about here, there's really nothing there besides the fact that the teams are division rivals. It's more fabricated nonsense from this clueless media.

The media is just trying to stir the sh!t up. Their job is to generate controversy and get eyeballs to read their crap articles & watch their crap shows.

And us fans gobble it all up cause we're morons.

Seems the "new" Rex Ryan is still a transparent Idiot.

Misplaced anger, kimosabe.

Neither Rex or any Jet (sans Santonio) has said anything remotely controversial this year. You're letting your emotions get the better of you.

"I won't kiss Bellichik's rings... but his ass, no problem-o!"

- Rex Ryan

Black Optimus Primate

I meant to positive rep you , I was a little too excited.

Rex has always been a BB fan boy. That's why his role in "That's my Boy" wasn't such a far-fetched concept to grasp.

PAC I'm not just talking about this year bro its about the whole package of 4 years .... since they have talked for the first 3 years you tend to build a reputation ...right ? Why do you think the media bates Rex with this bullsh*t ? Because hes never opened his mouth before ? They bate he bites and they love it. Did you see the press conference on the Jets official site when Rex announced he was putting Revis on IR ? The media was asking him questions that were insulting and Rex should have put them in their place but he could not for 2 reasons 1. he actually said he was holding off in case they go to the SB and 2. because he cant help himself and is easily drawn into ridiculous conversations. The media eas this sh*t up and in all honesty they eat Rex up as well/

No matter what Rex has done this year, which I happen to agree is very little, he has still created his own problems when it comes to these type issues. What does he get for all that ? he gets the media microscope.

No one cares what Rex thinks of Bill Belichick NO ONE but Rex seems to be fixated with the guy.

Ill be happy when this entire F.O. and coaching staff is Gutted

GOOD JOB!

I've watched every PC this year including Sparanos, Pettines, and Westoffs. That's why I can say you and those who are overreacting the last couple days are off your rockers. He throws in the occasional one-liner but is not being "eaten up" by the media whatsoever.
