If Arod goes, Jeter can move to 3B.

Moving Arod might kill 2 birds with 1 stone - Arods contract is gone and Jeter w/dimished range + a broken ankle makes the eventual shift from SS to 3B. Nunez or another SS takes over sooner or later, but maybe that move is spurred upon a year or 2 earlier than originally thought should Arod be traded.

So you're going to move a relatively immobile aging "gets pasta diving" Derek Jeter to a spot that requires as much fielding ability as SS and a longer throw to 1B? Also this franchies would by design get less power from a corner spot. They will never say it, but the Yankees would rather Jeter do some combination of corner OF/1b/DH. But Jeter has an ego and seems to have made clear to everyone he wants to play SS until he hangs it up.

Hopefully they get rid of Rodriguez. But more likely they put Nunez and/or Chavez or some cheap vet like that at 3B.

?

Less range is required for a 3B. Miguel Cabrera plays 3B. Slower, less athletic infielders typically play 3B.

And Jeters arm is plenty strong enough for 3B, as its one of the few reasons he's stayed at SS for this long.

Jeter is not ageless.Haven't looked at the defensive stats for 2012 but in earlier years he was getting to less and less. Granted at 3B he would defend from the line, but still he is going to be less mobile than a younger player. And he will be adjusting to a new positions. Further no Yankee manager is going to tell #2 to move over unless he wants to do it, and all indications are he wants to retire as the Yankee shortstop.

Might be true. But not even Jeter can make all the decisions.
