The Gun Of Bavaria
I guess the obvious question would be - Who? Ramsey? Schaub? http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/football/story/374970p-318644c.html ............................... Once again, the Jets must make a decision on Abraham, who leads the team with 8-1/2 sacks: They can sign him to a long-term contract or re-use the franchise tag, which would create intense acrimony and wouldn't make sense from the salary-cap standpoint. There's another option: They could tag him and trade him, perhaps for a veteran quarterback. In the latter scenario, Abraham would get the blockbuster contract from his new team. No matter what happens, the Jets aren't going to let him walk away as a free agent, receiving no compensation.
bman
if ets lose ABE then this organization is more stupid than I thought.. You can trade a two pro bowler for Ptrick Ramsey or Matt Schaub! Jake Delhomme maybe.

Green DNA
i said all along tp trade Abe to SD for rivers straight up. Trade a 2 time pro-bowler for a guy that has never taken a meaningful snap in the NFL? That is the kind of deal that everyone would rip Bradway a new a$$hole for if Rivers fell on his face. That is a speculative deal, I would prefer a proven commodity.

Abe's value has diminished and we are getting a potential franchise QB, remember he was 4th pick in draft. You are not going to get another QB for Abe, Volek or shaub is riskier IMO and do not possess the upside that rivers has

bman
i think our defense needs abe..But if we can can keep the top 6 pick and get rivers..I'd pull the trigger on that 1.. Then draft Defense with that pick and rb in rd 2..
bitonti
I guess the obvious question would be - Who? good question. If the team trades Abe flat out they won't get value. How many 27 year old 3x pro bowl DE sack masters are there in the league? not many. they will franchise him again if the cap allows (and it should). That's pretty much the story. 4HCrew
Why not just sign him to a long term deal? he is a proven pro bowl player that has a lot of value to this defense. Hell if you want to trade someone put big ole #63 up there and his bad knee

Hell if you want to trade someone put big ole #63 up there and his bad knee he wants 20 mill bonus and he has either been highly effective and then hurt or healthy and average like this year either way not worth 20 mill plus

Mean Papi Green
and what has Ellis warranted this year? sure as hell not his big contract thats a done deal, nothing can change that now, why make the same mistake again my point is this, since the end of last season what has he done to prove he deserves a big investment?? 6 sacks??? and a streak of 6 invisible games in mid season after a great start.... 4HCrew
I just have to disagree with you mean Papi. I think with the average to mediocre play of the DT's and sub par play of Ellis J Abe stats are not as good as they should be. From what I have seen he has hustled all year and played better against the run. He is the only true pass rusher on the Jets and could change the game on any play. Other than maybe Vilma no one else can do that.

You are not going to get another QB for Abe, Volek or shaub is riskier IMO and do not possess the upside that rivers has Darrell Russell was the #2 overall pick in the 97 draft, and look where he is now.... Draft position doesn't mean anything if you don't prove yourself in the NFL. He hasn't gotten the opportunity yet, but he could just as easily be the second coming of Ryan Leaf as he could be the next Peyton Manning. That is the kind of deal that everyone would rip Bradway a new a$$hole for if Rivers fell on his face. That is a speculative deal, I would prefer a proven commodity. First of all, what proven commodity do you think Abe can bring? Nobody is going to give up a proven starting QB for an injury prone DE who ranks in the 7-15 range overall in NFL DE's. Secondly, being an avid poker player I tend to judge everything on odds and probability. Odds of Philip Rivers becoming a quality starting QB-50%-50%. Odds of him being a star-5%-10%. Odds of him being a total bust-5%-10%. Odds on John Abraham playing a full season once he gets his big payday- 30%. Odds on Abe having stats that put him in the top 5 class of DE's-10% (It's actually 0% but I'll give him a hance here.) Odds on John Abe settling for anything less than top dollar for DE's-0% I'll take my chances on letting him go.

PatsFanTX
Bit - I agree. I see another franchise tag coming on. But can the Jets afford to franchise Abe again given their cap situation? Abe would get the average top 5 salaries of DE's or a 20% increase over his salary this year, which ever is greater. Keep in mind, the cap hit for franchised players is 100% in that given year. That's a big hit for a team rumored to be already at $128 mil going into next season.
