Long to take over at San Diego StateESPN.com news services

Oklahoma offensive coordinator Chuck Long is expected to be named San Diego State football coach, multiple sources told ESPN's Joe Schad.

San Diego State fired coach Tom Craft after he failed to post a winning record in four seasons. Athletic director Jeff Schemmel promised to hire a replacement "who can excite the community."

Among the other candidates considered was Dennis Erickson, a source told Schad.

This will be Long's first head-coaching job at the college level.

Long, a native of Norman, Okla., has been offensive coordinator at Oklahoma since 2002. He spent three seasons before that as quarterbacks coach with the Sooners. He was Iowa's secondary coach from 1995-97 and then was the Hawkeyes' quarterbacks coach in 1998 and 1999 before leaving for Oklahoma.

The former Iowa quarterback was runner-up to Bo Jackson for the Heisman Trophy in 1985, by the smallest margin of votes in Heisman history. Long played eight NFL seasons with the Lions, Packers and Rams, finishing his pro career in 1994. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1999.

Schemmel said he believed San Diego State could become a top 10 program when he made the change, based on "what we have in place here, what we can recruit to here. We've seen what Utah did. They did it, and they have no more assets than we do. And I would argue that we've got more."

"In this position, you have to ultimately ask yourself the question of whether the person in charge could get you where you wanted to go. I think it was time for a change," said Schemmel, who was hired in July.

San Diego State hasn't had a winning season since 1998, when it went 7-5 and played in the Las Vegas Bowl. The Aztecs have played in only two bowls in the last 15 seasons.
