this sells short Mangold who is a perennial all Pro. again I am mostly on the "fire Tanny" bandwagon but let's not sit here and pretend everything is s--t just cause the Jets are losing. They have had some very good picks in the last few years.

i also think it's inaccurate to lump Wilson and Vlad (and even Sanchez) in with Gholston. These guys are all starters. VG was a pure bust.

Mangold plays center. He's great, but he's a center. Further, Tannenbaum doesn't get genius status for selecting the highest rated center and having it pay off. Same goes for Revis... D'Brick too....

7 years and he still has no QB.... He's been a failure.

There is lots of talk about Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum and whether he’ll be back with the team next season. Tannenbaum is often described as a “salary cap genius” in regards to his knowledge of contracts and the cap process but his drafting and talent evaluation gets criticized as causing an overall decline in the Jets roster.

Tannenbaum’s record doesn’t really show he’s earned the reputation as a great “capologist” and a bad drafter. It was Tannenbaum who built a team that went to the AFC championship game in 2009-10 including an 11 win season during that 2010 year, with the same coach and quarterback. This quarterback/coach combination has been 12-15 since the end of the 2010 season.

Many of the players who led to the team’s success were obtained during 2006-07 offseasons, which the Jets had 14 draft picks and traded back in the 2007 second round acquiring RB Thomas Jones.

Taking a look at the Jets drafts against other teams shows that Tannenbaum has not done a bad job with the actual draft picks he’s made since 2008. The New England Patriots had 40 picks from 2008-11 with 11 prospects working out, while the Houston Texans had 32 picks with 13 helping the team but the Jets had 19 picks with 11 contributing.

Now this analysis is subjective and these other teams had extra players to choose from, so the Jets may have been forced to stick with their picks more than teams with a higher number of prospects, but when Tannenbaum misses on a player, like Vladimir Ducasse, it is heightened by the Jets having so few picks.

The Jets were one of the most aggressive teams in the league and “trader Mike” would do whatever it took over the last several years to fill holes:

  • 2008) Jets trade a 3rd (67) & 5th (141) to Carolina Panthers for NT/DT Kris Jenkins. (2008 – 16 games, 2009 – 6 games, 2010 – 1 game).
  • 2009) Jets trade 3rd (83) to Green Bay Packers for QB Brett Favre (One season, 2008).
  • Jets trade 5th (153) to Philadelphia Eagles for CB Lito Sheppard (One season 2009).
  • 2010) Jets trade 3rd (92) & 5th (160) to Cleveland Browns for WR Braylon Edwards (12 games 2009, 16 games 2010).
  • Jets trade 4th (127) to Philadelphia Eagles for CB Lito Sheppard, get 5th (155) from Philadelphia Eagles.
  • Jets trade 5th (155), acquired from Philadelphia Eagles, to the Pittsburgh Steelers for WR Santonio Holmes (Became a free agent after 2010 season, resigned by Jets 5 years, $50 million, $24 million guaranteed).
  • 2011) Jets trade 2nd (61) to San Diego Chargers for CB Antonio Cromartie (Became a free agent in 2011, resigned by Jets, 4 years, $32 million, $14 million guaranteed).
  • 2012) Traded away QB Drew Stanton, for the Indianapolis Colts sixth round pick (187), his $500,000 signing bonus remained on the salary cap, after acquiringQB Tim Tebow from the Denver Broncos for the Jets 4th (108) & 6th (188) taking on an additional $1.75 million in 2012 along with $1.03 million in guaranteed 2013 salary, (Tebow’s 2012 season, 6-of-7 for 39 yards passing, 87 yards rushing in 29 attempts, 3.0 average).

Tannenbaum has traded up 6 times since the 2008 draft and has traded back once givinga 4th (102) to the Green Bay Packers for their 4th (113 – DB Dwight Lowery) and 5th (162 – QB Erik Ainge, 2008). So Tannenbaum chose to build the team since 2008 via free agency, veterans for draft picks and draft trade-ups for the “ready-made” rather than developmental players.

Here are some contract decisions Tannenbaum made as well:

  • 2010) Renegotiated/caved to Darrelle Revis’ demands with 3 years remaining on his current contract giving him a 4 year, $46 million, $32 million guaranteed, “band aid” contract. Revis becomes a free agent after the 2013 season and can’t be restricted (franchised) in anyway by the Jets.
  • 2011) Signed LB David Harris, 4 year $36 million, $29.5 million guaranteed (biggest contract of any ILB in NFL history).
  • Cut LB Bart Scott’s 2011 salary by a $1 million agreeing to guarantee his $4.2 million 2012 salary.
  • 2012) Gave QB Mark Sanchez a contract extension worth $20.5 million fully guaranteed over 2012/13.

Tannenbaum’s team building strategy, not using the draft, along with bad contract decisions has led the Jets to deal with salary issues stifling the team’s ability to make roster changes/maneuvers. The fact that they were cautious during free agency in 2012 signing mostly one year deals, have not been willing to make in-season trades, sign many available free agents or make waiver claims for higher priced players to fill holes, shows the team was forced to take a different approach.

The Jets became very salary top heavy with almost half their 2012 cap space tied up in the pay of 7 players without the ability to get much relief. They’re a projected $19 million over the 2013 cap with many current starters heading to free agency after 2012.

Assuming Tannenbaum had the autonomy, Woody Johnson didn’t force him, to make decisions Tannenbaum is a “salary cap genius” alright, he’s a genius at putting the team over the cap, restricting necessary moves, but his drafts were not bad compared to others in the league.

A true “cap guru” would not use this fiscal irresponsible ultra aggressive building style because he’d know the end result would be a quick decline in talent with no way to improve the roster given the financial constraints.

So next time you hear Mike Tannenbaum is a “cap guy” not a “draft guy”, think again, because you’d wonder if any team in the league will want him to manage their salary cap after what he’s done to the Jets?

I see you failed to give Jason Malito his due for this article over at NYJetsCap.com, and passed this off as your own.....

Nice!

Tannenbaum's recent history has been pretty bad, so that's why he will be canned after the season.

The Harris, Scott, and Sanchez deals have all hurt the team, irreparably. In fact, the team's success has followed his leadership arc.

His first few years were much better, and so were the results.....

Mangold plays center. He's great, but he's a center. Further, Tannenbaum doesn't get genius status for selecting the highest rated center and having it pay off. Same goes for Revis...

The problem with Mangold is using the second pick of a total rebuild on a premium center. Yeah, there's one every year and they always go in that range, but Mangold is better than the other dudes and he was taken later so there's at least some sort of surplus value there. Tannenbaum gets zero credit for Revis because he didn't ****ing do anything. Revis was Mangini's pick. All Tannenbaum had to do was pay chart value to move up and then ink a slot deal. Check and...sh*t.

Jason does a great job with his site and is very generous with his time but you will see that everything on here is linked and verified by various sources. I’ve worked hard compiling the Tannenbaum records for weeks and have done extensive research. Below is just some that I’ve done.

Funny I wrote Sione Po’uha would be cut for salary cap reasons on Sept. 12 now everyone is saying it, that doesn’t mean they stole it from me? Just look through the history of my writings, they stand on their own.

It took you weeks to pore over seven Wikipedia entries?

If you notice in the article every move is verified by a legitimate news source which takes lots of work and research. My name actually goes on these articles and it doesn’t take a minute like making an anonymous forum post it often takes days to compile an article of this nature. To say I took someone else’s work and put my name on it is insulting and false.

Of course it's insulting and false. The underlying information isn't work, yours, his, or otherwise, because facts aren't proprietary, and I think the conclusion that this record is one of a 'draft genius' is sufficiently insane as to rule out the possibility that it actually came from somewhere.

Tannenbaum gets zero credit for Revis because he didn't ****ing do anything. Revis was Mangini's pick. All Tannenbaum had to do was pay chart value to move up and then ink a slot deal. Check and...sh*t.

using this logic, none of the drafting is Tanny's doing. Not for good or for ill. If he doesn't get the credit for Revis than he doesn't get the blame for Gholston.

Too much for you to understand that people refer to Tannenbaum as a cap genius, which he is terrible at, but a bad drafter, so why isn’t he a draft genius if he’s a cap genius? The title is meant as being humorous begging the question how did Tanny get such a bad rep as a drafter and a good one as a cap guy when the facts don’t point that out.

All I can say is look over the articles I have written and tell me where I stole them from?

Saying I plagiarized someone’s work is BS (period).

The fact is anyone can criticize my writings/opinions but my articles stand alone, take lots of time to research/write and are all my doing:

Jason does a great job with his site and is very generous with his time but you will see that everything on here is linked and verified by various sources. I’ve worked hard compiling the Tannenbaum records for weeks and have done extensive research. Below is just some that I’ve done.

Funny I wrote Sione Po’uha would be cut for salary cap reasons on Sept. 12 now everyone is saying it, that doesn’t mean they stole it from me? Just look through the history of my writings, they stand on their own.

If copying and pasting entires and footnotes from Wikipedia under bolded headers qualifies as work and research then I am in the wrong ****ing business.

Why don't you go to Wikipedia and produce the same document I did to use as a reference for all the moves Tannenbaum has made during the draft. You will see that you need to use many resources and cutting and pasting from these resources is not an option.

I had to find corresponding articles to every draft move either remembering who was traded when and what they gave up or got so I could like them later if needed. I also had to categorize the articles. I broke up the moves into separate categorize to make them easier to find and insert into any article I was going to write.

Fact is I gathered resources to be prepared for when a Tannenbaum article would be appropriate and planned on doing more than one on Tanny’s record. Like how he changed his drafting/building strategy since 2007 or how Woody Johnson has possible been calling the shoots, but I guess I just stole that as well or maybe I can just cut and paste it.

The bottom line is the appreciation for the hard work I put into this piece was to say I stole it and put my name on it and then just cut and paste some stuff. Two things which are just not true.

No you accused ME of stealing this and I don’t like being called a plagiarizer. Please show me where Jason did anything like this. Sure some of these moves have probably been criticized by Jason along with countless others but this, like all my other articles, are of my own hard work, I don’t need to copy anything anyone else does, so no not OK!

With how defensive you're getting, you're not helping your cause very much.

Not helping what cause, I could care less if every post in this forum said this was the worst piece of garbage they ever read but it has my name on it and was done via my effort no one else’s. Jason has a wonderful site I would recommend to anyone but he writes in this forum so let’s see if he thinks I stole this article from him?

If you're going to be in the content business you're just going to have to grow up and put this ridiculous notion that anybody cares about your hard work right out of your mind. I'm being constructive here. The level of detail you went into on the individual transactions doesn't really bolster your argument in any way. This isn't research you had to do. It's time you wasted Googling. What you think is your process is really just a distraction. Next time just sit down, close the browser, and make your point. And knock it off with the quotation marks.

The cause that this isn't consolidated Wikipedia entries.

Here is the link to the article in question read it and prove I cut and paste from Wikipedia to make it.

http://www.jetnation.com/2012/11/29/tannenbaum-draft-genius-salary-cap-novice/

The document I copy and pasted in the post was 2 word documents I typed out myself after verifying moves by finding articles that match what happened. I remember all the trades the Jets have made since Tannenbaum became GM I don’t need nor would trust Wikipedia as a reliable source otherwise I would have just linked them and not the articles I did. Please go through every article I’ve done on JN and you will not find one link to Wikipedia!

Do you think Wikipedia mentions Santonio Holmes became a free agent in 2010? No, I added in information to use later a history of what happen to the player after the draft or does Wikipedia have Kris Jenkins years and games played, no, etc, etc. I put in so much information to use in this article, like I always do, using my own time.

The fact is the document I have has everything I need to break down the Tannenbaum’s drafts without forgetting things and links to back them up

I broke my ass for 2 weeks to get the information correct and link up articles to prove my points so I would be reminded that Cromartie became a free agent after 2011 and then he signed a large contract.

So NO THIS IS NOT WIKIPEDIA and you’re welcome please keep enjoying my work.

You’re missing the point I work hard on every piece I do for JN and understanding the CBA isn’t exactly easy. The thing was someone said I stole this article, not true, I worked hard on it did the proper research cause I’m held to a higher standard. I can simple cut and paste anything without proper citing unlike forum post. The hard work aspect is that it was “my work” not someone else’s that produced this article.

You also have no clue about how I get information. I use many sources, like people at the NFL or former NFL executive to verify information, yes I know these types of people. You all think it is so easy just use Google well remember my name is on this and the accuracy of anything I do is of utmost importance.

The forum folks have criticized my work before and I usually don’t respond cause they are entitled to their opinion even if it is different than mine but do not accuse me of stealing material, that is not fair to me and I will than fight back not just accept it.

Well D.B. can fight you on this one considering the first article on Jason’s page “Focus on Decision Making not the Salary Cap” was put up on November 30th while my article was put up on November 29th, so I guess I’m a mind reader.

Hey, I don't think we met. I am the guy who owns this site and has poured my heart, soul and money into it for the last 8 years.

You are the guy who I have no idea about, except the 10 complaints I got about you asking for you to be banned. I haven't read all of your posts, so I am giving you the benefit of the doubt.

But if you are going to accuse people of stealing, you should first make sure it has any validity. In this case it doesn't.
