Top GM Candidate Gamble May Want Tomsula as Coach

People will tune in with new leadership.

Wouldnt you be excited if the Jets draft a new QB?

Sure, probably. But ownership in today's NFL can not announce a rebuild to the public. It would drive down the interest in the team.

Who gives a sh*t about Rex's press conferences?

The Jets go 4-12 and this first time HC Tomsula could possibly be on the hotseat going into 2014 with the pressure of putting together a winning season. No GM or first time HC wants that.

2013 is the enema year. Get rid of bad contracts, get in young players, and let Rex take the fall.

Also you very rarely see a coordinator successfully go to the NC spot with the same team. Parcells went 4-12 in his 1st year with the Jints. As per his own view he still allowed his relationshjps with his defensive unit cloud his judgment. Perhaps if a guy is only here a year when he gets the bump it could be different. But all of this is delaying the inevitable to indulge a fathead bully who's on a tropical island downing melonball shots instead of reviewing the carnage of his failure. Understandable he needs a break, butif he plans on being here next year his priority should be in Florham Park. His vacation can wait.

Unless of course he is not going to be here.

That's my point exactly.

Jets go 4-12 next year, it's best to have Rex be the HC and you fire him. Then hire your own guy with another high 1st rounder on the roster.

If I'm Tomsula, I don't want the Jets job right now.

Why do these hypotheticals all have the Jets going 4-12, 3-13 etc. They just won 6 games without their 3 best players and some of the worst QBing I've ever seen. Next years team will be better than this years. There is no possible way it isn't.

The 49ers are hands down the most talented team in the NFL. They don't have an elite QB but other than that they are absolutely loaded. When healthy, the Jets have 3 or maybe 4 players at most that could start for the 49ers.

That is exactly what you want from your GM.

Justin Smith was a top 10 pick and a FA signing. Donte Whitner was a top 6 pick and a FA. Anyway that's 3 top 10 picks, one first overall, two top 6, 5 in the top 15, and only 4 picks in the 20s (most through trade). Lots of losing got them there. I don't think the strategy is anything amazing or unique for a FO, though major props goes to almost getting it done a time or two and being the best team in the NFC West.

Steelers or even Mark Ross from the GIants please.

In this particular scenario, you bring in Gamble and Tomsula at a time when expectations are at near all-time lows, then give them a year to identify the 3/4ths of the roster that need to be flipped. Added bonus: 2013 gets to be a redshirt year for Tomsula to figure out how to be a head coach. I'm assuming Gamble would be smart enough to hire coordinators with some experience to help mentor his young HC--maybe then you get the Norv Turner/Chan Gailey-type hire at OC.

As for this idea of keeping Rex around to staple a bad 2013 to on his way out the door, that only works if Woody hires a Casserly or Polian--somebody with enough political capital to have earned a throwaway season while intentionally going 2-14. No young GM wants to go into his first four-year rebuild having to forfeit a full season. New York has turned on Rex as hard as it's turned on Sanchez. He's a negativity magnet right now, and there aren't enough Ryan Lindley's on the schedule next year to turn that around.

thats fine but what happens when tomsula sucks the big one? gamble come sin and demands to bring his guy who hasn't even been a coordinator in the league and then he is failing hardcore......then what? gamble just fires the guy who he demanded we let him bring here as terms of taking the job? or do you now have to fire gamble and tomsula....since they were a package deal? yet another entire regime change? i have absolutely no problem with canning rex and fibnding a new hc to start over with. but let me ask you a question......if we were only looking for a head coach and we hired this guy tomsula.......all you would hear would be cries of "SOJ, who the **** is this tomsula guy and why are we hiring hm to run our team when he's never been more than a line coach????"

honestly i might be more impressed with the guy from the giants......their picks have mostly been closer to the end of the rounds.

If Gamble does his job the way it seems he's done it in San Fran, Tomsula might be fine. All things being equal, no head coaching hire has a predictable guarantee of success. Gruden could come here and bomb, as could Cowher, Lovie Smith, Belichick, Walsh, Ditka, etc. You never know, and there's no formula for knowing who will be great and who will suck until they do it.

doesn't trent baalke get any credit for the 49'ers? just one question.......if we were only looking to replace rex this year and we hired tomsula would you be like "**** YEAH!!!" or "WTF??????!!!"

The NFL is a QB league yet the 49ers have won 24 games in 2 seasons with Alex Smith and 2nd rd pick getting his first NFL playing time.

Top to bottom the 49ers roster is loaded. Not all of their moves have panned out but comparing them to the Steelers or Giants is a mistake because both of those teams have franchise QB's.

I don't know anything about this Gamble guy but I wouldn't belittle the 49ers accomplishments, the next time the Jets win 24 games in 2 seasons with be the first time.

I don't mean to sound like I'm stumping for Gamble/Tomsula, because we don't know much about either. My point is that if Woody comes across Super GM Guy and Super GM Guy wants his own coach, Woody should let him have it.

the 49ers were terrible for so long. drafting patrick willis and vernon davis were no brainers.... and alex smith - that was such a brilliant pick? a pick like that gets someone fired in NYC.

Bowman WAS a brilliant pick (and i wanted him here) - i give them props for that one yes.

wanting his own coach is fine. but tomsula? who is he? i'll admit i don't get in depth enough to know the individual coaches of every team but a line coach with no successful coordinator experience and whose only head coaching experience above pop warner was a .500 effort in nfl europe?? i think i'd be pretty annoyed if woody caves to this. why not just grab the cardinals receivers coach and make him our HC?

I don't know that he is or he isn't. Just that Woody needs to be flexible if Super GM Guy throws an ultimatum back across the table.

idk man.... u got to be able to move definitively in a better direction than RR if thats what u do. this tomsula guy sounds like a setup man.

but i'll tell u what, if u get a super GM guy and he pulls a power move like that, he better have more cache than to only be able to pull this tomsula dude with him. for real/ what kind of backwoods operation does he think this is.

he hasn't even been a coordinator before? crissakes

I don't know - HC jobs in the NFL don't just fall off the turnip truck. If you've got a GM that wants to elevate you from D-Line coach to HC, I kinda think you jump on it.

^ In response to both dudes: what if Marc Ross wants to bring Kevin Gilbride on as head coach? What if the Texans guy wants Wade Phillips?

idk about that. gilbride has been a successful coordinator at least......not so much as a head coach. does he get to punch rex before he leaves?

philips has had success as a coordinatore and Hc so i'd be ok with that over this guy tomsula

If Marc Ross was hired and brought Kevin Gilbride on as his head coach I would do two things:

 1. Charge $55 membership fees
 2. Retire

Seriously, Gilbride replacing Buddy's son? Message board gold.

Would they have a memorial old guy fistfight in the hallway, perhaps? Keeps coming back to the idea that demanding Ryan return precludes an experienced GM, and that also makes 2013 a shotgun wedding clusterf__K waste of a year. How can you sell that to we fans? We would be told upfront this year is a wates until the new guy coach gets here in 2014, and then probably deal with another down season setting up his program.

It's insane. Would suggest season tickerholders decline the penalty. Screw the PSL. I'm not paying it to watch Ryan diddle toes again. And they cannot blackout road games or RedZone.

Answer: do they make the team better? If no, then no to either. A a package deal only works if both positions are improved. It's important to have a solid package.

As many of you have heard, the Jets have been granted permission to talk to San Francisco’s Personnel Executive Tom Gamble for their open General Manager position. Gamble has been in the NFL for 24 years. He’s regarded as one of the best talent evaluators in all of the NFL. He’s been directly responsible for assisting San Francisco’s GM Trent Baalke for the past two years drafting guys like Kyle Williams, Kendall Hunter, Mike Iupati and Aldon Smith. Together they managed to lock up LB core of Navorro Bowman and Patrick Willis and Vernon Davis.

According to Albert Breer of the NFL.com, Bill Polian personally endorsed Gamble as a great fit for the New York Jets:

Also sounds like, early on, 49ers personnel man Tom Gamble is atop the Jets’ list. I don't want to see Rex fired yet, but if it has to be done because the new GM wants his own guy, I can live with that. But if we are going to switch HC's I think it's time to get an offensive HC here like the Saints did with S Payton, I know our last offensive background HC (Kotite) was a complete train wreck, but I think it's time again IF we make a move.

the 49'ers have been bad enough in the recent past that they have been slotted nicely in the draft. kudos to them for making good picks but if the jets have to go through that much losing to finally be talented gambvle will bve long gone before he gets to see the success.
