With New York Jets owner Woody Johnson and head coach Rex Ryan set to meet the public tomorrow the team, coming as no surprise, has decided to part ways with quarterbacks coach Matt Cavanaugh according to reports.

Cavanaugh received heavy criticism for quarterback Mark Sanchez’ regression during the 2011 season but was oddly retained even though the offensive coaching staff had been turned over with new coordinator Tony Sparano, probably next to be let go.  Sanchez took an even bigger step backwards during the 2012 season leaving the team no option but to part ways with Cavanaugh as their quarterbacks coach.

The Jets may still be searching for a new general manager, but they’re already making changes on the coaching staff. The Daily News has learned that quarterbacks coach Matt Cavanaugh will not be retained for the 2013 season, Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News reports.

Cavanaugh, whose contract expires at the end of the month, appeared to be on thin ice after the 2011 season, but he survived the ax. Mark Sanchez was in a holding pattern, at best, after an uneven 2011 season, but the young quarterback regressed this season.

Rex Ryan and his staff returned to work on Monday after a nearly week-long hiatus. Cavanaugh was informed Monday morning when he returned to the team facility that he won't be back for next season, according to a source.

It would be interesting to find out "who" within the Jets organization fired Cavanaugh? There is no GM and Rex is on a couples retreat in the Bahamas.

Technically he wasn't fired, he was just told he wasn't going to be offered a new contract (his current one expires in a few weeks). Besides, I'd imagine Rex is probably back at this point given tomorrow morning is the press conference.

I don;t blame Cavanaugh for Marc. Marc just does not have what it takes. I blame the Jets for hiring Cavanaugh, whose only recommendation as a coach was that he was REx's buddy. Asisine.

I think Sanchez turns the corner next year with a new QB coach and a year under his belt with Sparano's system. You gotta remember nobody has ever looked good in year one of a Sparano led offense. You already saw some flashes the second half of the season.

Cavanaugh should've gone with Schottenheimer. Again, he's another guy who had nothing to work with, but he basically presided over a #5 overall pick that got worse and worse over the course of four years.

Not sure why they kept him. He came over from Baltimore and the assumption was that Schottenheimer was forced on Rex or Cavanaugh would be OC. Seemed odd to pass him over, but keep him on. Especially for a squid like Sparano who had even less OC experience and very little other than a recommendation letter from Parcells.
