Bill Parcells

Anybody else think that all of a sudden, that he has just become another coach, probably in teh middle of teh pack.

First, let me start that I have the ultimate respect for the man. He took this morbid franchise and made it believe in itself and made it relevant again. I don't know many coaches that could have done that.

This current stint with teh Cowboys has been good, but certainly not great. And, you are starting to see things that are very UnParcellsian:

-Choke jobs in the 4th quarter

-His team coming out in games and seemingly uninspired and unmotivated

-A big game like yesterday and getting blown out.

Just things you would never see in from a Parcells team.

Has teh game started to pass him by? I think he may have hitched his wagon to QB's who he trusts, but who just can't seem to fit in today's game. Maybe that stubborness is coming back on him?

You have got to believe this is taking a toll on him. I wonder how long he will continue to stick it out. It just not seem to be the same coach that we admired

SD - You are way off in your analysis. Parcells has had to coach his coaches as well as players in Dallas. He has a very young defense and a RB with a injured wheel. As I stated in another thread Dallas will contend next year for all the marbles. It is still just a little too early.

RSJ-The one thing that you could ALWAYS count on a Parcells team, ALWAYS, was that it played better at the end of teh year than it did at the beginning. No matter the injury situation, no matter what transpired, they were GOLD in December.

Last week, they were outplayed by the Chiefs, and this week he got his hat handed to him.

In terms of having to coach coaches, that is on him. There is no excuse for that.

This is a different Bill Parcells we are seeing. His offense is very experinced , too.

I'm not making excuses for him. When he had a brand new coaching staff with the giants it took him 4 years to reach the superbowl and his teams were not always that great in december. I seem to remember the Jets knocking him off in december one year. When his teams were clicking they did always get stronger down the stretch. But they were not always clicking. And when Partcells had a very experienced coaching staff with the Jets it took him 2 years to get the team playing on a super bowl level. I'm not making excuses, I'm just stating the facts. No one on his current staff has been with him that long and most were cast offs from other teams. Last year everyone blasted him for having a losing record. Then he improved on that. Give him one more year and you will see.

Are you kidding me?

He BUILT the Jets team that went to the playoffs 3 out of the last 5 years.

:)

(Wonder if he should get credit for this year).

BZ

Good point!

But he shouldn't get credit for this year since this is the first year the core of the team that he coached is injured/no longer here.

This is what it came down to-A Bill Parcells team, in December played a game that they MUST have in order to be considered a playoff team, and they got their azzez handed to them.

They were not prepared mentally, or physically. The players and coaches looked dumbstruck.

It was odd to see a Parcells team get that handed to them. That was Jetsian

And neither one has won anything without Crennel. And walsh never won anything without Seifert.

Dumb statement.

I don't think it is dumb. Walsh doesn't have a body of work after Seifert. Bill has a body of work without Belly. He has done good, not great.

Parcells has done as much as he could with Bledsoe and his abilities- you get a guy that will wait in the pocket forever and that just will not work in today's game withe the athletes so big and quick

Parcells is not the savior and miracle worker that some will put up there to be

talk about a dumb statement! who the hell decided to go with bledsoe? parcells did. they had parcells in the hall of fame over 10 years ago and since then he hasn't won it all. belichick has 3 times. i'm not saying parcells isn't a good coach or that belichick is better. just that belichick won it all without big bill. not the other way around.

Jones knew what he was getting with Parcells coming in. He wasnt there to rebuild. Jones wanted Henson to play, Parcells said no and there you have it. Washed up guys like Vinny and Bledsoe wont do it for you. That falls on Bill.

Now, hey if Bill wants to stay around for another 5 years and start from scratch I'm sure he'd be pretty successfull.

But running out there with a bunch of has beens on offense wont cut it. Also add in an underachieving back who killed my fantasy season.

Matt, can I have your old Bruce Coslet AVATAR? I noticed you don't use it no more.

I think the problem is not so much that the game has passed him by, he's just not as shrewd without Belichick on his staff and doesn't have the patience to develop new QBs. When I heard he was taking Bledsoe to Dallas, I wondered how much longer it would be til he tried to get Phil Simms to leave CBS and go back to playing.

To me it's obvious:

Giants: Two Super Bowl rings

Patriots: One SB appearance, no rings

Jets: One AFC Championship appearance

Cowboys: Whole lotta nothin'.

The time has come for ol' Tuna to move on, go back to being a TV analyst, IMHO.

If you get a chance JetMo, I'd love to relive the memories.

:D

This is the best I can do; this stuff was posts made right after the loss to the Bills in '01 (a week before the Jets beat the Raiders on Jon Hall's 50 yarder to go 10-6 and make the playoffs/ it was a gift from Osama Bin Laden because this game was supposed to have been played the 2nd week of the seasons/ the first of Herm's many, many lucky breaks)....

Damn, wrong disc.

I can't find it right now, but I will eventually. In the meantime here's an article from that same season (remember the second loss to the Pats that year)

Game Story

(ADDING QUOTES)

NEW ENGLAND 17, NY JETS 16

--------------------------

EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (Ticker) -- December stirs bad memories of late-season collapses for the New York Jets. The New England Patriots were more than happy to flip the calendar.

After being thoroughly outplayed in the first half, the Patriots rallied from a 13-point deficit behind the precision passing of Tom Brady and posted a 17-16 victory over the Jets in a battle

of AFC East rivals.

Perhaps the biggest surprise of the season, Brady once again showed the poise of a veteran in leading the Patriots (7-5) to their seventh win in 10 games since he took over for injured starter Drew Bledsoe.

"I thought we had a real courageous effort out there," said Patriots coach Bill Belichick of his first win in four tries

against the team he refused to coach. "Being down early on the

road and in the division, they hung in there and fought back.

We're 7-5 and a lot of people didn't think we'd be in this

position. We came from a long way back, a long way uphill and

it's pretty satisfying."

The loss snapped a four-game winning streak for the Jets (7-4), who fell one game behind first-place Miami (8-3) in the AFC East.

A sixth-round pick out of Michigan in 2000, Brady completed 20-of-28 passes for 213 yards with no interceptions. He did most of his damage in the second half, going 15-of-17 for 160 yards when the Patriots scored on three straight possessions.

"This is huge for us," Brady said. "We needed to make

adjustments (in the second half). I just wanted to get the ball

out and get it in the hands of our playmakers."

Meanwhile, Jets veteran Vinny Testaverde was neary flawless in

the first half, but threw two key interceptions in the second

half.

"They didn't do a whole lot of changing (in the second half), we

just didn't make the plays," Testaverde said. "It was a chance

to remain in first and we didn't do it. The silver lining is we

have five weeks left to do something about it."

Testaverde's first interception was returned 12 yards by

linebacker Mike Vrabel to the New England 43. Five plays later,

Antowain Smith scored on a four-yard run for New England's first

touchdown 4:41 into the third quarter, pulling the Patriots

within 13-7.

After John Hall kicked a 50-yard field goal for New York, Brady

engineered a nine-play, 82-yard drive which was capped by a

four-yard touchdown run by fullback Marc Edwards with 2:11 left

in the quarter.

"They answered our TD with a field goal so we needed to score again, and we did," Edwards said.

The Patriots took their first lead of the day when Adam Vinatieri kicked a 28-yard field goal with 6:29 remaining in the fourth quarter.

Testaverde's second turnover sealed the win for the Patriots. With a 4th-and-5 at the New England 44, Testaverde attempted to drill a pass to rookie tight end Anthony Becht, but nickel back

Terrell Buckley picked it off with 21 seconds left.

The second-half collapse conjured memories of bitter Decembers

past for the Jets. Over the last 16 years, including this loss,

the Jets have enjoyed just three winning Decembers, with a

post-November record of 18-42 since 1986. Last year, they lost

their final three games of the season after starting 9-4 under

former coach Al Groh and missed the playoffs.

"We have to find a way to change that (December struggles),"Jets coach Herman Edwards said. "It's up to us to do it and we will. But today we were hurt by the tunovers.

"It was a game of two halves. We had a lot of energy and we moved the ball well (in the first half). Then in the second half, we gave them an opportunity when we turned the ball over. That gave them energy."

Ironically, the Patriots beat the Jets at their own game since

New York entered with a league-leading 33 turnovers forced, but

had none on Sunday.

The Jets dominated the first half, outgaining New England,

225-67, and held the Patriots to three first downs. Testaverde

was 15-of-23 for 164 yards, including a 34-yard touchdown to

Laveranues Coles, in the first half.

However, Testaverde was just 4-of-10 for 20 yards with the two interceptions in the second half when the Jets managed just a 50-yard field goal by Hall.

New York opened the game with a six-play, 72-yard drive which featured a 33-yard pass to rookie Santana Moss, the team's first-round draft pick playing in only his second game following

August knee surgery. Coles beat cornerback Ty Law on a slant, caught a short pass

from Testaverde and raced past safety Tebucky Jones for his

sixth touchdown of the year.

Coles caught a 24-yard pass on New York's second possession,

helping to set up a 19-yard field goal by John Hall, increasing

the Jets' lead to 10-0 with 4:53 left in the quarter.

Testaverde scrambled for 12 yards and Wayne Chrebet turned a

short pass into a 24-yard play to set up Hall's second field

goal -- a 40-yarder with 2:47 remaining in the half.

The second half started with the Patriots going three-and-out

and Brady getting sacked for an eight-yard loss by defensive

tackle Steve Martin.

But the momentum shifted when Vrabel picked off a pass that deflected by defensive end Brandon Mitchell and returned it 12 yards to the New England 43.

On a 3rd-and-3 play, Brady fired a pass over the middle to Fred Coleman, who raced past safety Victor Green on a slant and gained 46 yards before he was tackled at the New York 4. It was the first catch of the season for the seldom-used receiver. "Who heard of Fred Coleman before today?" Belichick said. "It

was a big play and a big run. I think it'll be the same thing every week with guys stepping up."

Two plays later, Smith ran behind left guard for a four-yard touchdown.

Craig Yeast returned the ensuing punt 34 yards to the New York 48. Former Patriot Curtis Martin then took over, running for 30 yards on two pitches to the New England 22. Martin finished with 87 yards on 19 carries and become the third

player in NFL history to open his career with seven consecutive

1,000-yard seasons. Barry Sanders and Eric Dickerson are the

others. Martin has rushed for 1,070 yards this season.

But Testaverde was sacked for a nine-yard loss and the Jets had to settle for a 50-yard field goal.

The Patriots responded with an 82-yard drive which Brady opened with four straight completions for just 15 yards. But the fifth one came on a 3rd-and-9 play when Smith turned a short pass into a 40-yard play to the New York 27.

"He (Smith) was the last read on the play and he broke a tackle and that was a big play," Brady said. "We needed to keep playing hard, keep playing with toughness and with discipline.

That's what coach Belichick preaches."

Kevin Faulk took over for Smith and rushed three straight times for 23 yards before Marc Edwards bulled in for a four-yard touchdown.

David Patten made the big contributions in New England's third straight scoring drive, catching passes of 12, 15 and 17 yards. After reaching the New York 5, a false start penalty pushed the

Pats back and they settled for Vinatieri's 28-yard field goal with 6:29 left.

The Jets converted two third-down plays on their final possession -- completions of nine yards to Chrebet and seven yards to Moss -- and reached the New England 44. But on a 4th-and-5 play, Testaverde attempted to fire a pass over the middle to a well-covered Becht and Buckley made the interception

with 2:02 left.

Brady ran for two yards on a 3rd-and-2 play with 1:06 left after New York called its final timeout to seal the win.
