Yeah Ansah does a great job getting his hands up in passing lanes. He wasn't put into a position to get after the passer that often playing inside a bunch, but that experience inside will help him quite a bit with his hands long-term. Worked out well for Aldon Smith. Great closing speed. There's a lot to work with and he developed nicely last year. Will be interesting to see where he goes and how he ends up, but things tend to go well when you combine tools with high character and he seems to have both.

He's kinda like a Gholston who gives a fuch.

Jake Bequette had more sacks in one season in the SEC than Chandler Jones had his entire college career in the Big East. He had almost triple the career tackles (and more sacks their final season) than Bruce Irvin (only 8 1/2 sacks final yr) did in the ACC.

Aldon Smith had 5.5 sacks his final year at Missouri. JJ Watt had 4.5 sacks in 2009 at Wisconsin...only 7 in 2010 (his final year)....meanwhile DaQuan Bowers had 16 as a Jr....meanwhile Jeremy Beal was a tackling and sack machine at Oklahoma for 4 straight years.

Give me the Beast!

...out of those two.

these stats need to be put into context. aldon had 10+ sacks as a freshman. chandler jones has 1 brother in the NFL and another the baddest man in MMA. Jarvis doesnt just have good production, he has terrell suggs type production had he stayed 4 years.

Ansah by the way was very good in the SB game but he was kinda worthless SB week of practices. In one on ones he literally has zero moves. He has no plan to get to the QB he's relying purely on athleticism. Which might work sometimes. But he's not really a pass rusher at this point in his career. Alot of development to come.

How much production do you want from a guy that wasn't even a starter his senior year until someone in front of him got hurt?? The progression the kid has made has been unbelievable; got noticed for putting in the time on special teams, worked his weigh to a backup role and then once he took over the starting role he flourished in lining up all over the field.  Not to mention dominating his peers at the Senior Bowl. The kid has the production when it matters, not to mention he's drawn absolutely nothing but rave reviews from assistant coaches and just about everyone associated with him.  He is arguably the most freakish athlete at his position, a very hard worker by all accounts and an extremely quick study.  Besides learning the nuances and terminology, not sure what more you could want from a player.  I'm beginning to think there's no way he drops to 9 at the rate he's going.

so the fact that he wasn't a starter until he was a senior is a good thing? production aside, I just don't see the fit. He's always had his hand in the dirt and he can barely understand the game as it is. To stand him up and make him cover running backs and tight ends is a nightmare conversion. how many  3-4 OLBs were 270 coming out of school? It just doesn't happen He's a 4-3 or 3-4 DE waiting to be bulked up. unless the Jets want to use 3 3-4 DE there's no role for Ansah on rex's D.

1) Ansah stood up some in college.

2) Merriman, Vrabel, and McGinnest come to mind for 270 guys. Kerrigan Or Orakpo might be close but I forget. Pace, Suggs, and Spencer are three guys I suspect play around that weight.

3) No one is drafting a DE/OLB in the top ten to cover TEs and RBs.

4) He is not a 3-4 DE.

His "negatives" include inexperience, and inability to stop the run when double teamed.  He'll get experience. I am all for Ziggy.

Jordan is a close second, just for potential-sake.  But teams will run at Jordan all day.  His best bet is to be brought along slowly like Aldon Smith, and then what? Smith doesn't play in space.

Both have the same 10-yard split, but Ansah has the weight to be a factor in the run game.

And there's the Gato that comes out during draft time that I like.  I was thinking this place ruined you for good.

Clay Matthews wasn't a starter until his senior year and he played football his entire life.  Ziggy started playing two years ago after realizing he wasn't going to make it playing ball or running track; the fact that he worked his way up through specials without being gifted anything should be telling enough of his work ethic.

Gato already mentioned a few, but who cares about his weight when he moves as fluidly and with more explosion than pretty much every other prospect come in weighing less.  And once again, you simply do not select an OLB in the top 10 to cover TEs and RBs; that's how a franchise ends up with drafting a solid all around player/Calvin Pace and everyone pisses and moans, because he can't get to the QB.

Not a spot for Ansah on Rex's D?? If Rex can find a place for guys like McIntire, Muaga and a bunch of the other JAGs, I'm pretty sure he could find some use for one of the best athletes in the last handful of years.

EDIT i just read point #2. Vrabel took 5 years to convert. Merriman i guess is a decent comparison, except that he had 18 sacks in last 2 years. If Ansah had Merriman's production I'd have no problems with this player. basically you are giving 2 or 3 exceptions to the rule, most players don't play linebacker at 270.

if Ziggy Ansah's dad was a 3x All Pro in the league that might be a valid comparison. Clay also looked great at Senior Bowl practices, Something Ansah didn't do.

let's just forget it folks. Some 4-3 team is gonna take this guy and he's gonna play in the 4-3. perfect for the Giants at 19.

Adalius Thomas was heavy, and a Ryan favorite.

Los Yets pick ten spots before 19 bit.

Most 3-4 OLBs are closer to 270 than you want to sell. I suspect since you're bit that you chose that last sentence's words very carefully. Of course most linebackers aren't 270, but we're looking for a very specific and very different kind of LB.

ok so let's walk this through If the Jets drafted Ansah, where does he fit at the depth chart. Starting OLB? Really? he doesn't actually know how to play football. gonna stand him up and throw him to the wolves year 1? Or a pass rush specialist? except he doesn't have pass rush moves. What is the plan for this player? Teach him for years and hope he's good in year 3/4 like Vlad?

screw that I'd rather take Jarvis and watch him win DROY.  if Jarvis is retired by the time Ansah is all caught up in year 5, so be it. not drafting for 2020.

meanwhile Ansah to a 4-3 team he plays 4-3 DE which is basically already (kinda) knows how to play and he can rotate in. It's a much simpler career path.

what kind of LB are we looking for? A pure pass rusher? Cause Ansah has 4 sacks and no pass rush moves.

A pass rusher and edge setter yes. What and how many pass rush moves are needed to be OK at 9?

He would open on the depth chart playing a role as a DE pass rusher who once in a while stands up and rushes the passer, assuming the team doesn't go into the draft with only McIntyre at OLB. Maybe they throw him into the fire and start him, but don't think that is Rex's style for the majority of players especially pass rushers.

1. It's a throwaway year, why not let him develop?

2. He DOES too have pass rush moves, he has a rip, a swim, and a bull-rush. With NFL coaching and more experience I think he could develop a nasty spin move.

3.  Put him where Bryan Thomas used to not do anything.  He can not do anything over there.  Like Thomas he can set the edge against the run, and who knows, maybe like Thomas not be effective rushing the passer.  He can only get better, this will be what, his second real year of playing?

What relevance does Clay Matthews' father even have in this discussion?? If anything it makes the fact that Clay couldn't start up until his senior year that much worse, considering he's been groomed to play football since he was born.  They both worked their butt off to wind up starting their senior year, but Ansah did it in much more spectacular fashion.  Lol at how you mention ansah didn't look great in practice, but then gloss over the fact that he dominated the actual game in which he earned MVP honors.  Give me Iverson and you can have the guy who looks great in practice but doesn't show up on the field (not saying matthews doesn't show up on the field).

Whether it's Jarvis Jones, Dion Jordan or Ziggy Ansah, there's almost no way that Rex is having any of them be an every down player out of the gate.  That's how you get guys to hate the NFL when they are not put in a position to succeed and the nuances of the trenches eats them up.  No matter who we draft there, they're almost guaranteed to be a situational player until they develop.

Please don't act like setting the edge is meaningless.  It's the most important thing and it's not easy.  It's probably the key to the entire defense and it is why the younger guys that we all think have potential have trouble getting on the field.

Who are some past Senior Bowl game MVPs?

for the Record Ansah wasn't the MVP. EJ manual was the MVP. Ansah was "outstanding defensive player" an award recently won by illustrious players such as Robert Ayers and Sam Acho.

the game is  important but the practice is not like any old practice. It's a closed session with all the NFL decision makers and scouts there. Ansah didn't do well in the practices and yes that matters.
