I am so bummed that this trade talk is gathering steam. Sure, the guy is super selfish. Sure he is annoying. But still... Oh well, at least we still got Cromartie.

It does seem to be gaining steam, and it actually makes sense for the 9’ers.  Harbaugh has to be sitting there fuming that if Revis could have shut down Boldin, that snot nose wouldn’t have the Lombardi right now, he would.

The CBS article above makes sense right now to.  The Hawks have to be very concerned about San Fran getting Revis.

Could be one more player here also.   Elway has to realize that his window with Manning, who he went all in with, is about to close.

If all three of these teams are interested, and I think they will be, something will happen.

It seems that the Jets have made a decision that they are not going to pay Revis what he is asking.  At this point, as fans, I guess it doesn’t matter what we think.  All we can hope is that the Jets get a haul.

Having 9, 31,34, 39, and maybe a few mid rounder’s would sure fix a lot of holes, and maybe have the luxury for a guy like EJ Manual.

Next year’s QB draft, outside of Bridgewater doesn’t look that great either.  The 9’ers have the fire power right now

I guess if you want to spin it that way to make it look better... If the goal is for him to finish his career as the Jet, the contract was a disaster.

Ridiculous.  It's nice  to sit here with hindsight and decide things would be better if we had Revis locked up for the next ten years at $6M per, but that wasn't going to happen.  At the time that deal was brokered, Revis was coming off a historically great season and the team was coming off of an AFC Championship game appearance.  The guy had a long holdout.  Getting him to camp proved the right thing to do because they had another excellent season and he obviously was hurt by getting in late.  The deal specifically was set up to make this offseason time to sh*t or get off the pot.  It was bad luck that he got hurt last year because otherwise the value would be higher and we'd have a better chance to get this mythical Herschel Walker deal.

The way the contract was set up protected the Jets from his holding out and gives this full season to work out a deal.  Giving up the franchise tag isn't that big a deal because Revis has already proven he is not afraid to hold out and the fanchise tag is over $10M and includes clauses regarding a yearly raise.  What would you have done differently besides not giving up the franchise tag?  Look at it this way - if he'd signed a 2 year deal this would be his franchise year.  How much difference is there?

I want Revis back, badly. But the reality of him constantly holding out and rumors of wanting to be the #1 paid defensive player at around $16 million is insane. I guess other teams put their roster together more intelligently and can afford that big load but clearly the Jets can't. So I guess I am relegated to hoping for like you said, a large "haul". I am just not so confident that we will intelligently allocate any picks that we get in return. Call me the usual bitter Jets fan... its more realistic concern, I think.

And we have to keep picking QB's til one sticks. Even in the softest of drafts, there is at least one hidden gem of a QB that will outperform a turd like Sanchez.

Green Lantern: Jets Need To Draw San Fran And Seattle Into Cage Match For Revis

If Either Gets NFL's Best Cover Corner, Gang Green Will Come Out A Winner, Too

By Jeff Capellini, WFAN.com

The popular belief these days is Darrelle Revis will get traded, but not before he shows that he’s 100 percent healthy and once again capable of being the best cover corner in the NFL.

But that was before the San Francisco 49ers decided it was best to get their hands on virtually every pick in the upcoming draft.

The Niners have but one true weakness and that’s in the secondary. Baltimore’s Joe Flacco abused them in the Super Bowl. You can make a case that if they had suited up someone with game to cover Anquan Boldin the Niners would have beaten the Ravens rather easily and added another Vince Lombardi Trophy to their already impressive collection.

It now appears the 49ers know full well what they need to do — meet the Jets’ steep asking price for Revis, a player that could very well keep the status quo going in the NFC for several years.

San Francisco is expected to have an astonishing 15 picks, including compensatory selections, in April’s draft. Considering the exceptional way the Niners have done business of late, they are in the very enviable position of being able to add the kind of depth that could keep them ahead of the hard-charging Seattle Seahawks in the NFC West for the time being. And that’s without trading for Revis. However, in this world of win-now, especially when you have the ultimate defensive weapon at your fingertips, why leave anything to chance?

The Niners would be nuts not to pull the trigger. That is if they truly believe, as I do, that medical science and Revis’ work ethic will get him back to being the all-world force that he was. If they believe all of that and can offer a contract that would make Revis happy, something that is doable despite this player’s Herculean appetite for money, well, you’d have the NFC’s best team already basically become unstoppable.

There are many out there who are holding on to this hope that the Jets will keep Revis, but with each passing day it looks more and more like they won’t. General manager John Idzik and head coach Rex Ryan didn’t exactly extinguish the flames of fear during their press conferences at the NFL Combine. Sure, they said Revis is this and that and important to what the Jets hope to accomplish during their rebuilding process, but they never flat out said he’s not available. They left the door open somewhat publicly, when in reality it has been wide open privately for a very long time.

And while the 49ers could offer their first round pick, No. 31 overall, the first of their second-round picks, No. 34, and other selections later to acquire Revis, the Jets have to be smart here and not necessarily jump at what appears to be the most attractive deal on the table.

The Jets need Idzik to call his former employers in Seattle and gauge their interest, because the Seahawks could have as many as 12 picks with compensatories and must know that their rivals adding Revis would be the type of blow that could take years to overcome regardless of how good they are or figure to be going forward.

If the Seahawks were to get into the game and somehow land Revis at the expense of some combination of a player (corner Brandon Browner comes immediately to mind) and picks, they’d have maybe the greatest secondary on paper in NFL history, when you consider it would also include incredible talents in corner Richard Sherman, Pro Bowl safety Earl Thomas and safety Kam Chancellor.

I’d like to see Colin Kaepernick try to navigate that minefield.

So the idea here if you are the Jets is to get the 49ers and the Seahawks, if both are truly committed to the Revis way of life, into a room and play them off each other, because if Idzik were to do this and come out with an incredibly deep haul, he’d earn currency for quite a while with right-thinking Jets fans who know Revis has to go. And for those who would remain upset the Jets traded away arguably the greatest player in franchise history, well, they’d eventually get over it, because they’d eventually come to the realization that this team has a billion holes to fill and little money at this point to fix the problems. The draft must be the answer until more of these absurd contracts come off their ledger. The sooner the non-believers get that through their thick skulls, the better.

Having San Francisco and Seattle try to one-up each other is a great way to turn a very good package into an immortal package, and whatever it potentially ends up being will only hasten the Jets’ plan of becoming relevant again.

The Jets have more pressing needs to worry about than a player in Revis that, despite all of his talents, they went 8-8 with two years ago. What about last season you may wondering? Yes, the Jets went 6-10 basically without Revis, but they did not allow a single 100-yard receiving game. The Jets’ main issue was on the other side of the line of scrimmage. They had the worst offense in football, and everyone knows it.

A ton of draft picks and some stealthy salary cap maneuvers will begin to change that.

Idzik is definitely a mystery man at this point. I think he has the moxie and intelligence to do what is necessary, mostly because he seems hell bent on not repeating the mistakes of his predecessor, Mike Tannenbaum. The Jets going forward won’t be about the big splash, nor will they attempt to throw money at problems by backloading everything and deal with it later.

That philosophy did work initially, but we’ve all seen the mess that approach makes later when that 20-something with potential turns into a 30-something with deteriorating skills and a gigantic price tag.

Idzik just has to play this Revis thing out until the last possible second, leave no stone unturned and play the games all good GMs play when one of their star players becomes available.

Get in touch with San Francisco. Hang up and then call Seattle. Ignore the posturing both are sure to display, because in the end the Jets have Revis, who could very well be the final piece for both of them in a race to a Super Bowl title or two.

Which one wants him more? That’s for Idzik to find out and exploit.

If I am Pete Carroll I am entering the race for Revis just to drive the price up for San Fran. That's his best option right now.

Not really. The guy who over paid Harris, Holmes and Sanchez is long gone. The guy trying to trade Revis was left holding the bag.

I understand its two different people. But the thought is still the same. We have a chance to retain Revis, who is a proven elite player while we overpaid for three turds. Well, two turds, and one scumbag.

Yes, a 2 year deal with the franchise would've been equally as bad because it would've also ensured that he leave after this year.

hold the horses

Report: 49ers not likely to pursue Revis now

A source tells ESPN's Chris Mortensen that the 49ers are "not inclined" to pursue Darrelle Revis at this time.
If Revis were healthy, it would seem like a no-brainer for the Niners to break off some of their 15 draft picks and hand them to the rebuilding Jets. But no one knows just how effective he will be following his ACL tear, making a long-term deal a major risk. And without that new contract, Revis would essentially be a very expensive one-year rental. Additionally, this 49ers' regime has set a precedent of not paying big money to other teams' free agents. We'll see if they change their tune once April's draft gets closer.

How about not acquiescing to a guy with 3 years left on a contract in the first place?  Rex screwed up by worshipping at the alter of Revis and Tanny screwed up by giving him that 32 million over 2 years he wanted.  If not for the injury there is no way in hell Revis would have planned on coming to camp this year without a new Mario Williams contract.

If they had spanked him in 10' like he deserved to be, they might not be in this situation now.

The no franchise tag and ridiculous cap hits if traded are the cherries on top.

this is what happens when you have really amazing players. The Jets haven't had a player this good since the early 70's. If the Jets trade Revis he will be the best player to ever be traded in his prime (under the age of 30). We forget that top talent demands respect (and a big check). If the Jets had 53 boar hunters they wouldn't have any hold outs. Or wins.

What about offering to make him the highest paid corner in the league shows a lack of respect?

I'm sure Idzik would be able to swing something if he simply had to make him top paid.  The problem is that Revis wants 4-5 million MORE than whoever is 2nd.

How would that have changed the current circumstances?  They would NOT have made the AFC title game in 2010 without Revis.  They would NOT have Revis now if they hadn't dealt with him during the holdout and he did NOT have 3 years left on that deal-Revis could "buy" the last 2 years for something like $1M.

or good news that they don't trade the best Jet since Joe Willy for a bag of magic beans.

it's also a really deep corner draft in the top 60 picks so that kinda hurts the Revis market too

One thing we are going to have to accept here.  Every one is going to be lying until we wake up some morning, and the the back pages say "Revis traded to xxxx"

I think the Jets, Woody, have decided they aren't going to pay Revis what they consider and outragous amount of money.

What we think doesn't matter

IIRC, he has a clause that if he held out this year the Jets keep his rights for another 3 @ around $3M per.  They sure didn't think this through.

Remember they gave out contracts to Harris and Sanchez AFTER the 2010 Revis contract. 2010 was the time to get him in a contract that would've made him a jet for life. They failed.

Back in 10' the talk was that Revis was one stubborn SOB and would have sat out the entire year if need be.  I don't think he would have given two sh-ts about this clause.

If the Jets would've paid him in 2010, he would've gotten less money than he wants now and he would've been a jet for life. Thats the original sin.

They did fail.

The Jets (Tannenbaum) bet the farm on the 2011 season.  They bet the farm on Sanchez turning into an NFL QB.  Sanchez failed, and Tannenbaum failed.

Tannenbaum paid with his job.  Now the clean up starts.

Hopefully  Idzik has a plan to get the Jets competitive  by 2014.  It appears that not paying Revis, and getting what they can for him is a part of the plan.

If the Jets are contenders in 2014 and Revis is with the 9’ers, screw him.  If the Jets are still in the toilet in  2015, then screw Idzik.

I’m not a Revis fan, or Revis hater,  I’m a Jets fan.

You guys are funny.  Too lazy to go back and see if you were in the "let him rot" or "pay the man" categories in 2010, but it is beyond silly to blame the front office because Revis wants as much money as possible and is a great player.  There is no way Revis would be a "Jet for Life" and a great player because he will hold out any time his value is higher than his contract and blaming the FO when they actually took this into consideration is moronic.

I always thought they should let him rot.

Revis has made what, about 80-100 million between salary and endorsements so far?  How much does he need to make to feel respected?  another 80 mil contract averaging 12 mil a year isn't good enough?

He can stil make more money than he'll ever be able to spend and be beloved without 16 mil a year.  I just don't understand why being the highest paid corner isn't good enough.

There is no way to prove what you're saying but i highly dobt that if they had had given him a legit, non band aid, contract in 2010 at ~10-12m for 6-7 years, we wouldn't be talking about him right now.

He wouldn't accept that then, and he won't accept it now.   He received $32,500,000 his first 2 years, and started hinting about a hold out last year.

I'd love to have a happy Revis.  He's never going to be happy.
