My point is that I have no idea whether this is a good move or not, I'm not sure, but I think Goodson will be a good addition, he's only had two games in which he's received 15+ carries in his career and has went over 100 in both of them, and he's a great receiver for our WCO, so I'm optimistic and am sure that Idzik, who's very livelihood is on the line has thought it out more than you have. Yet you on the other hand, are positive it sucks.

If you have no idea if this is a good move or not, why are you this upset that in my opinion, the resources would have been better spent elseware?  Obviously every GM in the NFL spends more time thinking about moves than fans do.  Does that mean that if I didn't like the Vernon Gholston pick, I'm not entitled to think it sucks since the GM/scouts know more than me?  Am I not allowed to be upset with Mark Sanchez contract because Mike T knows more about football than me?  Why don't you just give me your opinion, and the rest of us Jets fans will just adapt to your view, and then we will never have to debate football again.  We can just support everything our GM does.

It's amazing that people are so upset at signing a guy that averages 4.5 a carry over his career, has 4.4 speed and catches 90 percent of the passes thrown his way. For TWO MILLION DOLLARS!!! AHHHHHHH!!! WE GET TO DRAFT ANOTHER POSITION EARLY AHHHHHHH!!!!! YOU MEAN WE'RE NOT WINNING THE SUPERBOWL THIS YEAR AHHHHHHH!!!!! OWEN MEANEY DIES AT THE END? AHHHHHHH!!!!!!!

The guy has barely played over his career, so 4.5 yards per carry doesn't really mean a hell of a lot.    Shonn Greene averaged 5 yards a carry his first season,  by the time he was the legit FT running back,  he was below 4 and is now going to be a backup to Chris Johnson on a losing team.

I don't hate the move, I don't love the move, it's just a move to bring in a back up running back who might get a couple of carries a game, maybe get 10 carries in a few games, but other than that, he's a non factor on a team.     He played on a Raiders team where the RBs always got hurt. And he still barely played.  Sometimes players are what they are and that's a 3rd stringer. Nothing more.

This is a fallacy. In game 9 against Tampa Bay, Darren McFadden got his first injury of the season, a high ankle sprain. Goodson took over as primary ball carrier and two possessions later, sprained his ankle. He then missed five games, McFadden missed six. In the game that McFadden didn't play, and Goodson was available, against the Chiefs, he was the primary back and carried the ball 13 times for 89 yards. The next week, McFadden returned for the final two games and took the lion's share of carries with Goodson being the primary backup.

Not saying you are totally wrong, (I think the jury is out) but this part of your argument is absolutely untrue.

Shonn Greene is a plodder that makes Thomas Jones look like Jamaal Charles to go with hands that Roberto Duran would envy. Two totally different players.

FWIW - the Chiefs were one of the worst teams in the league vs. the run.  That game being his shining example really isnt all that impressive.

By looking at the stats, the one thing that is encouraging is that both times in his career that he received more than 20 carries, he went for over 100 yards...but that was only 2 games back in 2010.

Unless Goodson flat can't hang on to the football or is hurt - he's going to be seeing 5 times your projections, counting receiving touches. The last guy we had that was close to being functionally elusive was LT and he was between E and 1/8 of a tank.

Well, on the flipside, the Raiders offensive line was horrendous. Yes the Chiefs were bottom 10 against the run, but I was not holding this game up to any standard, I was just pointing out it's existence as it pertained to the myth that Goodson was third on the depth chart.

Do you think Goodson is better than Powell?  Do you think he has more upside than Powell?  I'm not saying he's going to be 3rd on the depth chart but I'll tell you what, he's going to have to up his game if he wants to get more touches than Powell.  I'd say Powell is going to earn the starting spot, and Goodson and McKnight will get a few touches each- assuming McKnight is still a Jet, and we don't draft another back.

Yes, I think Goodson is better than Powell. He will be the starting RB if nothing changes between now and TC. Book it.

I really don't see that, but if you've watched Mike Goodson play for the last 4 years and came to that conclusion, than you've earned that right.  I think they signed him to get the bulk of the carries, but BP is going to out play him.  Powell had 17 catches last season with limited action, and was a better goal line runner than Green, in my opinion anyway.  Guy was breaking off 5-10 yard TD runs last year, and should only improve with another year of work, and a better OC.  With Goodson's 7 fumbles in 250 or so touches, I see us using him to spell Powell between the 40's.  Goodson puts one or two on the ground in a critical spot and he's on the bench.  The fumbling issue should not be overlooked.

What about the fantastic career of Mike Goodson shows you that he's deserving of 6.9 million over 3 years? If we signed him at 3 million, I wouldn't mind. 4 Million and I'd be meh about it. 6.9??? For a team that has about 17 million to sign/draft a RB, 2 starting guards, at least 2 starting LB's, 2 starting Safteys, 1-2 rotational D Linemen, a starting TE, 1-2 rotational CB's and a starting kicker, and will possibly lose another 3 million in cap space do to the revis trade- YES I am upset about spending that money on Mike Goodson.

Your username sounds like the title of a football-theme gay porno.

I think Goodson has good potential. Never really had a chance to prove himself on the field yet. I see him being the starter but at the same time I see Powell being used a lot as well especially passing downs

Because he cannot catch the ball and cannot block in pass protection?  Sweet plan.

Like the QB situation, they certainly need more at the position.  We get a bunch of guys and keep whoever performs. It will be nice not to be wed to guys because of their contracts.  These three might be enough, but why live with them?  As for potential, all three were 4th round picks.  That should tell us something.  None of them has done much in the league, so they will probably start on even footing.  At least we can hope they choose who gets carries based on merit.

The way it's working out this offseason,  they are in a tank kind of season.   The guys they are signing are injury prone, cheap, and r

It's not that much of a fallacy.  Most Running backs last what, about 4-5 years in the NFL on average.  Why guys don't play over that span on bad teams is because they just aren't that good.   And this guy seems to have injury issues without ever playing much.

Neither one of them will be on the team in 3 years, most likely. Its not going to cost 17 mil for the two of them.

That makes me feel much better.  Sometimes people are so afraid to disagree with a move the GM makes, and just blindly support every move he makes.  How many bad signings/trades have we had this season?  David Garrard, Peterman, Goodson, Ivory?  Two are off the team, and so is their gauranteed money (not much, but still adds up)  Goodson will probably be cut- if he's not, he should be.  And Ivory, who was our savior according to most on this site, is already banged up, and hasn't shown anything.  Guy looks like a right guard with the football in his hands.  We wasted a 4th on him, and it will be a miracle if we see anything from our 5th and 6th round lineman who look absolutely horrible so far.  The early picks better pan out or we are looking at 5 years before we get this thing worked out.  Signings like Ivory and Goodson who flop, and suck up cap space are absolute killers.

Mike Goodson Takes Pay Cut From Jets

Renegotiations

by jason

The Jets and troubled RB Mike Goodson have agreed to a contract renegotiation. Goodson, who had a well publicized arrest earlier this spring, was absent from all of training camp when he failed to report to the team. Goodson’s failure to report to the team could have been costly if the Jets did not support his reasons for missing training camp. He could have been fined $30,000 per day as well as nearly $60,000 for each preseason game he was unavailable for. The team also could have asked him to forfeit slightly over $80,000 in signing bonus money.  This money would be on top of the four weeks of base salary and signing bonus allocation that he will be forced to surrender due to his league ordered drug suspension.

The sides appeared to come to a middle ground rather than going through any CBA related process of recovering money. Per a source with knowledge of the contract, Goodson reduced his base pay from $1 million to $715,000 in 2013, a loss of $285,000 on the season. In addition the team converted $650,000 and $850,000 of his  Paragraph 5 salary in 2014 and 2015 respectively into roster bonuses. At this time I dont know if these are per game or standard roster bonuses, but considering his situation I would opt to think they may be the per game variety.

The deal was struck prior to Goodson’s suspension from the NFL becoming official on Saturday so the suspension money was based on a $715,000 base salary rather than a $1 million dollar base salary. Under his original contract he would have lost $235,294 in salary to the drug suspension, but that number will now be reduced to $168,235, which would make the actual salary loss $217,941.

However the numbers currently on file seem to indicate an actual cash take home that reflects a six game rather than a four game suspension. Goodson’s 2013 salary cap number is currently $798,080 rather than $882,198 that the four game suspension should leave him with. Teams do have options to suspend players for conduct, such as the Raiders decision to suspend Rolando McClain last season, but I don’t know if that is the case here as there could be other cap mechanisms at play.  Just a bit of speculation on my end that I would think someone will clear up in the coming days as sometimes when there is this heavy volume of NFL transactions some numbers can get a bit mixed up in the process.

EDIT: I was informed that Goodson will lose two games to NFI status, which is where the other two lost paychecks come from in his contract renegotiation

Goodson had little option but to accept a pay cut from the Jets. With all his legal troubles no team in the NFL was going to touch him and the Jets could have fined him significantly and then cut him as soon as his league mandated suspension ended. This move likely allows the Jets to reclaim as much as they felt was reasonable after the bad PR that Goodson brought to the team this offseason.

people are underrating Ivory. But don't forget about Antonio garay. They whiffed on him, Peterman, Garrard and Braylon.

How are they going to make $17M over 3 years when they signed contracts of 3/$6M and 3/$6.9M?  They didn't get much in the way of signing bonuses either.  These guys haven't been great pickups, but they don't have to be, they were cheap to mid-range signings.  This isn't like the Redskins whiffing on Haynesworth.  The guys that they cut were getting nothing up front.  I think Peterman's signing bonus was like $65K.  Are you sh*tting me?  How can you complain?

repeating the names of the misses isn't an argument when you ignore the hits.

should he have gone into camp with 53 players ?

should he have kept his own signings for the sake of it even if they were beat out by better players ?

lame dude, just lame

did he piss in your cherrios or something ?

what hits? don't be an idzik apologist just cause you want him to be awesome. The only objectively good thing this guy has done all offseason is draft SHeldon Richardson.

we've been through that list.  you know who they are

can you at leasty give him credit for cutting his signings in the name of keeping the best players ?

I'n not an apologist.  I think he should have cut goodson to send a message.  they waited too long to name a starter at QB.  he should not have excused rex to go to clemson.  he's made mistakes

but I give credit where it is due

If Willie Colon makes it through 16 games I will praise that signing. Chances are Vlad and Winters are starting by week 8. Kellen Winslow is another bust that has yet to bust ( but probably will). I can't think of any really good signings. Dewan for Laron was a huge downgrade. Antwan Barnes? GMac shows more than that guy.

which best players is he saving for? like Wilkerson? I'll give him credit when he gets that deal done.

This doesn't make sense.   They have to cut players.  Bringing in crappy players that wind up being cut isn't a good thing. it just means he brought in crappy players. At least they were cheap, but in general,  it has not exactly been a winning first year so far for Idzik.  Now if Smith, Milner, Richardson wind up great, all bets are off.  But if Smith sucks and Milner isn't that good,   and most of his free agent signings are doing what they've done so far,  it wasn't a good year.
