Jet/BosoxFan
This is an apology to my many fans from all walks of life...and I mean it sincerely, I am truly sorry. I am sorry if you want me to sit here and unload a barrage on Johnny Damon. He was my guy for the last 4 years and he was even my guy when he was in KC and Oakland. He was a truly remarkable athlete and a pleasure to watch for the last 4 years. He will be missed dearly. He is responsible for the hands down greatest memory of my baseball life...better than a game winning HR I hit in Little League even...and I am referring to the Game 7 granny he hit that in essence was a mortal stabwound delivered to the punchdrunk Yankees and did away with "1918" chants forever. The pain Yankee fans felt that night still brings tears of joy to my eyes! I cant say a bad word about Johnny. It is the one offseason move made by the Yankees since their championship drought began that I actually think will help them address a need and improve their team. That said, there truly is a "Welcome back to the 80s" theme going on in the Bronx...9000 offensive players and no pitching. The slide will continue especially if Mariano goes down this year. I am saddened by losing a (cant call Johnny a class act because he is kind of a dirtbag) important cog in the RSN machine...but I remain as unafraid of the Yankees as ever! Kiss my @ss, Bob! Jet/BosoxFan
if Mariano gets injured we can just move Dotel or Farnsworth to closer uh huh...sure...and without Johnny, we'll be all set with Gabe Kapler and/or a second helping of Dave Roberts. Bugg
No offense-but the day Mariano's done this team has to completely retool their pitching staff. Dotel and Farnsworth may prove to be very effective setup/middle relievers, and they've both been adeqaute to good closers at times. But there's only one Mo. And it's gonna be a b!tch to replace him. Which is why they wanted Ryan so badly, figuring his contract would run past Mo's retirement. One scary thing-Yanks are locked into this team. If one of these old guys-Sheff, Matsui, Damon, Giambi, Posada-suddenly turns to sh!t there isn't much flexibility in this roster and nobody's taking any of these contracts. You'll get some Melky Cabrera-type overmatched minor leaguer to cover that spot. And that didn't work too well when Bernie went to crap. I think they could've lived with Jeff Davanon or Jason Michaels platooning with Bubba. But it wasnt't to be. Damon will be a good player for 2 or 3 years. Beyond that, who knows what you can expect in year 4? when they had nothing to offer for Aaron Rowand, Nomah wen tot LA and nobody wanted to go past 4 years for Damon, this move pretty much was a given. Be advised-you're going to see a lot of balls get through the left and right center gaps. But figure Damon's bat will make up for it.

Your response to JBF was excellent regarding the Mariano deal. And it's the truth. But the above quote from you is misleading. Damon will catch a lot more of these drives then Bernie and Womack and Matsui did last year. In fact, the OF defense, even with Damon's lack of an arm, is vastly improved over 2005, as we now have a CF who can cover ground, and catch up to stuff. This is besides his offensive prowess. And his locker room presense. Oh yeah. It also dealt a serious blow to the mortally wounded, reeling Bosox.
Thor99
And his locker room presense. Seriously? The man everyone in Yankeeland called the king idiot? Now he has locker room presence, just because of those pinstripes? He's not worth 13 million a year.

He's not worth 13 million a year. Suposedly, Damon was a very popular figure in the Bosox locker room. Just going by what I read. BTW - 13 million is overpaying him. No doubt about that. But if Matsui gets that, and Furcal gets that, so Damon is mearly getting the market rate for a leadoff hitter, and a "need-filler".

While Damon is no longer the elite CF he once was, he is still well above average and improves the defense in the OF immensely. If Johnny Damon was in CF versus the Angels, he catches that fly ball that Bubba and Sheff botched and the Yankees win. Heres to 06 in the Bronx
haggis
I had pretty much realised at the end of the season that Damon was gone and would most likely be in pinstripes. To hear the news was not really earth shattering. What is annoying about it is that it appears the Red Sox did nothing to sign him and given the GM state, this worries me a little. Well perhaps the Sox don't agree with the yanks that 13M a year for a CF that cannot throw is a good deal. Damon's strength is clearly his leadoff capabilites and stealing potential and he is fast in the field. But I can't help but think the yanks have locked up another Bernie Williams here: was good, did deliver but was then overpayed and was average. The key really is today's physical. If that shoulder is okay, then yanks should be okay. But he took a helluva beating at Fenway over the past few years. But pinstripes or not, I still have the memory of Game 7 of the ALCS and night he stabbed the yanks in the heart. That can never be taken away. How can you attack the Red Sox FO for losing a free agent to the Yankees? Getting outbid by the Yankees is a fact of life. They make more money than us and everyone else and there is nothing preventing them from spending it at will, even if it means the death of 25 other teams per season! Whatever! I used to hate to watch it, now I dont mind so much because: 1. The Yankees cant get it right if their lives depended on it! 2. The more $ they spend, the sweeter the YEP becomes as we host an annual one!

You trying to tell me you wouldn't be ALL over the yanks if they lost their GM of the future then have 2 wet nut rags co-GM in place of him and then within a week of that lose one of their top players? Look, I'm not that surprised at Damon going. Like I said, I felt it was coming back in June. There was plenty of talk in RSN about Damon being in pinstripes. I have no issue with him playing there. What I do have issue with is: 1. The Sox seeming to be asleep at the wheel (although that is a little cloudy in terms of details). 2. Damon claiming he tried his best to stay with Boston. Bullsh*t. He jumped so quick it wasn't even funny. If he truly wanted to stay with Boston he would have rejected the yanks and worked solely with the Sox in getting a deal done. Damon is all about Damon. He loves himself and he will thrive in that ny spotlight. But will there be enough limelight to go round in that club? 3. I love the Sox moves so far, but the holes are worrying: 1B, SS, Who's on Third?, OF. Damon was adored by what faction of fans? The ladies. He is not a man's man ballplayer. That is why I'm not that upset he's gone. I was more sad to see Bill Mueller go. EDIT: And another thing. Damon said all year he would not sign with the yanks that he couldn't do that to the Red Sox and their fans. Well the snake jumped pretty quick. I remember when Petitte left the yanks the Sox came after him HARD. What did he do? He declined their cash and went to Houston. Why? Because he couldn't do that to the yankee fans and team. The more I think about this, the lower Damon goes in my estimation. Johnny Fredo Damon. He's dead to me.
