Buzz: Jets to Hire Graves? (Update: And Ruskell?)

May 15th, 2013             10:18 am

After the moves earlier this morning, attention now turns to who John Idzik might bring in to work with him in the front office. One candidate has emerged already:

Jason La Canfora        ✔  @JasonLaCanfora

Jets are expected to hire former Cardinals GM Rod Graves to join their front office staff

10:00 AM - 15 May 2013

The two worked together from 2001 to 2004 in Arizona. Here’s a Brian Costello story from shortly after Idzik was hired by the Jets where Graves talks about him in glowing terms:

“He’s probably one of the brightest guys I’ve ever worked with in terms of dealing with rosters and players and the finance behind player salaries and so forth,” Graves said. “He’s very well organized. I think he does a great job at future projections and roster management for making decisions today that will allow for flexibility down the road. He’s very good at that.”

UPDATE 4pm:

Another name being speculated on…

ProFootballTalk         @ProFootballTalk

Currently trying to nail down that both Rod Graves and Tim Ruskell will be hired by the Jets.

Ruskell is another guy with a wealth of experience and a connection to Idzik, who he worked with both in Tampa and Seattle, where he was the President of Football Operations until 2009.

So there's your player/scout guy.  He's got a pretty good track record of drafting, IMO.  Not too many big misses and lots of really good players found after the 1st round.  I like this.

Word.

More changes to Jets front office

Posted by Josh Alper on May 15, 2013, 11:49 AM EDT

John IdzikAP
Assistant General Manager Scott Cohen isn’t the only member of the Jets front office being shown the door as General Manager John Idzik puts his team in place.

Multiple reports in New York indicate that director of football administration Ari Nissim is also leaving the team. Nissim had been with the Jets since 2006 and played a major role in negotiating contracts when Mike Tannenbaum had Idzik’s job. Jojo Wooden, who was the team’s assistant director of player personnel, also left recently to take a job with the Chargers.

There’s also word on some of the new faces who could be joining the Jets. Many of those reports on Nissim’s ouster also mention the expected arrival of former Cardinals General Manager Rod Graves. PFT is working to confirm those reports, as well as a possible role for former Seahawks General Manager Tim Ruskell with the Jets.  Idzik and Graves previously worked together in Arizona while Ruskell was in the Tampa organization at the same time as Idzik in the 1990s.

It’s an expected part of any first year under a new general manager, but all of the moves away from the recent past with the Jets won’t do anything to quiet talk about the shakiness of Rex Ryan’s hold on the coaching job.

Does every single blurb about the Jets on PFT end with speculation about Rex's allegedly tenuous job status?

It sure seems that way.

Remarkably similar to what Sandy Alderson did when he came to the Mets, bringing in established henchmen to change the culture. Not that it's worked for the Mets, mind you, but it's good to see the Jets Good Ol' Boy network flushed out.

The Mets will not spend the money to compete hoping the fans will wait until their farm system can fill in quality players- the Jets and Woody have shown they will spend the money. We just need competent people drafting and getting fair priced free agents.

Ruskil and Graves were completely incompetent at their last jobs.

I wont say they were completely incompetent. In Graves defense the Cards were decent in his tenure as GM. with the exception of locating a QB when Warner retired.  They found decent players who contributed all over the team.

Ruskell i dont know much about other than his ties to Seattle. He seems to be more of a scouting guy than anything. He was also on the short list for the GM job in Chicago when Jerry Angelo got fired last season.

Renarkably similar to every new GM hire ever when the new GM comes from outside the organization. They went outside the organization for a reason, and probably not because they were happy with what they got out of internal hires.

Their last GM jobs?  because they aren't being hired here as GM's.  Herm Edwards was a great D-backs coach.  Terrible HC.  Rex was a great DC.  Not a very good HC.  Tannenbaum was a good accountant.  Horrible GM. Sometimes a step up in responsibility takes a competent employee out of his sphere of comfort and/or ability.  So these guys were good enough in the past to land GM positions in the NFL. They are being hired to perform a job below the pay-grade of a GM.  And they come with GM experience.  Seems to me Idzik is trying to surround himself with proven, intelligent, experienced employees.  Don't see how this can be a negative.

Long time Cardinals fan and I must tell you that when Graves was fired, Cardinals fans couldn't be happier.  We have been calling for his head for almost a decade.

News of his addition to the Jets was quite a surprise for Cards fans:

http://www.arizonasportsfans.com/vb/f4/jets-to-hire-rod-graves-195065.html

Graves had been with the Cardinals organization since 1997 during which the Cardinals have had 10 seasons with 6 or less wins.  He job was saved by the amazing SB run in 2008 but things quickly turned ugly after that season.

Graves was promoted to GM in 2003.  That was when Cardinals fans got their first bad taste of Graves.  In his first draft Graves passed on local star Terrell Suggs (who everyone expected them to pick) and traded picks with the Saints.  Graves got two picks late in the first round but also ended up giving the Saints a 4th.  With those two first round picks Graves selected WR Bryant Johnson and DE Calvin Pace (Two players who no one expected to go in the first round).  This began a decade of frustration with Graves for Cardinals fans.  Don't even mention Adrian Peterson around a Cardinals fan.

Graves supposed "Strong suit" was contracts.  However he became known as the human snail in that regards.  Rarely would he work multiple contracts at the same time it seemed.  Not to mention most of the contracts he completed left fans scratching their heads.  For example, in 2005, fifteen months after giving OT LJ Shelton a big contract the Cardinals ended up cutting him.  This type of story repeats itself often in Graves career.  Questionable move after Questionable contract after Questionable trade.

Some of Graves biggest hits that Cardinals fans still have nightmares about:

Passing on Suggs to draft Bryant Johnson

Passing on Adrian Peterson to draft Levi Brown

Trading Anquan Boldin for a 3rd rounder

Trading Dominick Rodgers-Cromartie and a 2nd round pick for Kevin Kolb

Giving Kevin Kolb a $60M contract

2008-2011 not drafting an OLineman in the first 6 rounds when the Cardinals OL sucked

Endless Free Agent signings that made no sense and crippled the Salary cap.

So then I guess its good that he is not coming here to be the GM, huh?
