Jets Reportly Set to Hire Ex-Cards GM Graves

After the moves earlier this morning, attention now turns to who John Idzik might bring in to work with him in the front office. One candidate has emerged already:

The two worked together from 2001 to 2004 in Arizona. Here’s a Brian Costello story from shortly after Idzik was hired by the Jets where Graves talks about him in glowing terms:

“He’s probably one of the brightest guys I’ve ever worked with in terms of dealing with rosters and players and the finance behind player salaries and so forth,” Graves said. “He’s very well organized. I think he does a great job at future projections and roster management for making decisions today that will allow for flexibility down the road.He’s very good at that.”

Ruskell is another guy with a wealth of experience and a connection to Idzik, who he worked with both in Tampa and Seattle, where he was the President of Football Operations until 2009.

More changes to Jets front office

Assistant General Manager Scott Cohen isn’t the only member of the Jets front office being shown the door as General Manager John Idzik puts his team in place.

 

Multiple reports in New York indicate that director of football administration Ari Nissim is also leaving the team. Nissim had been with the Jets since 2006 and played a major role in negotiating contracts when Mike Tannenbaum had Idzik’s job. Jojo Wooden, who was the team’s assistant director of player personnel, also left recently to take a job with the Chargers.

 

There’s also word on some of the new faces who could be joining the Jets. Many of those reports on Nissim’s ouster also mention the expected arrival of former Cardinals General Manager Rod Graves. PFT is working to confirm those reports, as well as a possible role for former Seahawks General Manager Tim Ruskell with the Jets.  Idzik and Graves previously worked together in Arizona while Ruskell was in the Tampa organization at the same time as Idzik in the 1990s.

 

It’s an expected part of any first year under a new general manager, but all of the moves away from the recent past with the Jets won’t do anything to quiet talk about the shakiness of Rex Ryan’s hold on the coaching job.

The Mets will not spend the money to compete hoping the fans will wait until their farm system can fill in quality players- the Jets and Woody have shown they will spend the money. We just need competent people drafting and getting fair priced free agents.

I wont say they were completely incompetent. In Graves defense the Cards were decent in his tenure as GM. with the exception of locating a QB when Warner retired.  They found decent players who contributed all over the team.

 

Ruskell i dont know much about other than his ties to Seattle. He seems to be more of a scouting guy than anything. He was also on the short list for the GM job in Chicago when Jerry Angelo got fired last season.

Renarkably similar to every new GM hire ever when the new GM comes from outside the organization. They went outside the organization for a reason, and probably not because they were happy with what they got out of internal hires.

Their last GM jobs?  because they aren't being hired here as GM's.  Herm Edwards was a great D-backs coach.  Terrible HC.  Rex was a great DC.  Not a very good HC.  Tannenbaum was a good accountant.  Horrible GM. Sometimes a step up in responsibility takes a competent employee out of his sphere of comfort and/or ability.  So these guys were good enough in the past to land GM positions in the NFL. They are being hired to perform a job below the pay-grade of a GM.  And they come with GM experience.  Seems to me Idzik is trying to surround himself with proven, intelligent, experienced employees.  Don't see how this can be a negative.
