Marty Mornhinweg: QB Competition Could Be Over Before Camp

As far as the whole taking the snap from center thing, it's been made pretty clear by pretty much everyone that the real concern there is footwork.  Interestingly enough, one of the very many things that you've seen the "experts" crapping on Sanchez for is how completely awful Sanchez's footwork is and how it's gotten progressively worse over time.  The point is that there's pretty much nothing you can criticize Geno for that won't also apply to Sanchez.  In the end, you have to let the best player play, whether that's Geno, Sanchez or even McElroy or Simms.  Starting the one guy the Jets have at the position who has proven beyond doubt that he is absolutely horrendous for no reason other than "just because" is not going to do anyone any good.

Agree with you.

I fully expect the "taking the snap from center" to become either the "red, yellow, green" ... or "teach him to slide" point of contention for the impatient huddled masses.

Gimmick offense can be defined as an offense that isn't used in the NFL

Partial list of QBs drafted from the air raid in the NFL

QB Tim Couch
QB Josh Heupel
QB Kliff Kingsbury
QB B.J. Symons
QB Graham Harrell
QB Nick Foles
QB Robert Griffin III

QB Brandon Weeden

QB Landry Jones

and now, Geno Smith. (Johnny Manziel is also in this offense)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Air_raid_offense

note i am not saying that Geno is gonna stink because of Kliff Kingsbury. (or be great because of RG3)

But it's possible that starting him week 1 from an Air raid offense to a West coast offense might be too ambitious a career path.

Okay, but not being used in the NFL doesn't make an offense a "gimmick". With the right personnel and coaches, ANY offense can succeed at ANY level of football.

We all really like Geno but it's concerning that doesn't really know how to take a snap from center. marty morn offense has more shotgun than most but there's gonna be about half the game when the starting QB is gonna have to take traditional snaps.

Yes there's hope that Geno can be the next Russell Wilson but Wilson came from a stronger QB class, and non-gimmick offense . I just think  he might need a year or so to get seasoning. a redshirt year could be the best thing for his career.

WCO offense is based on timing and footwork.. will be shocked if Sanchez doesn't win. Consuela is under center day 1 imo

in theory maybe.

If Marty Mornhinweg uses air-raid concepts in his WCO (like what Shanahan did for RG3) then Geno will have an easier transition than it would seem.

The Jets gave Sanchez the starting job when he was drafted. We should all hope that whoever is starting this year has earned it.

Cam Newton came out of a Hit-Your-First-Read-or-Run offense and is doing just fine.  Who gives a f*** about the system.  Saying Geno should sit is stupid now that Garrard is gone.  He isn't going to learn anything from Mark Sanchez sitting on the bench.  Start Geno Week 1.

Geno will win the job because there's no better option.  Who gives a f***?  Was Kirk Cousins any competition for RG3?  Or Matt Flynn for Russell Wilson?  Or Drew Stanton for Andrew Luck?  Either a QB can play or he doesn't.  All this other stuff is meaningless.

In what world is timing and footwork anything but two of Sanchez's worst attributes?  Hell, it's very possible that in those two categories, McElroy could be the best of the bunch.  And no, that's not even meant to be a compliment to McElroy.

It's certainly very possible that Sanchez ends up as the week 1 starter, but if so, it would be that they don't want to throw Geno into the fire yet and can't bring themselves to start some random nobody, either currently on the team or off of the scrap heap, over their draft pick.  So instead, they will just cross their fingers that Sanchez pulls his head out of Moore's ass just enough to avoid riots at MetLife.

... But only if he can handle the snap from the center, amiright?

yeah..  I think MM is full of sh-t on this one.

He's likely trying to play mind games with his QB's to see if the heightened sense of urgency will make one of them falter the next couple weeks.  How can you be preaching competition for 5 months then declare a winner before they've even put pads on.

ohhh that tricky Marty Morningwigs.

Oh, the Ape is on fire in this thread... I'm self-reppin' just to tip you pigs off that some high-intellect funny just happened, you won't get it, but at least you can rep it to give the impression you did.

if you put Cam Newton in the same room as Geno Smith.  Cam is a beast: a tight end with running back skills and a QB arm.

Geno is a regular guy. If geno Smith had Cam Newton's physical abilities he'd have gone 38 slots higher.

You are acting like Geno Smith was a high pick. He was a Kevin Kolb, Kellen Clemens type of pick. You compare him to RG3 and Luck and that's not really a good comparison. We hope he's Russell Wilson. But let's not pretend he's a FQB just cause we want him to be.

It goes like this;

Step 1. Sit Sanchez the first year

Step 2. ????

Step 3. Franchise QB and Super Bowl Champs

Fool proof plan right there.

So we are comparing Geno Smith to Tom Brady now? there's no way that will end badly.

I'm saying that a RB, in a TE's body with a QB's arm, doesnt mean sh*t.

Most of the best QB's to play this game are far from a freak physical specimen.  They're built more like Geno Smith.

Yeah well Sanchez plays like an undrafted free agent in year 4.  If we still had Garrard I wouldn't be advocating this.

Arguing that Sanchez should start has no leg to stand on.  It's just to start him "because".  We all know Geno will win a fair competition by default.  So its either start Sanchez and have Geno learn nothing from it, and deal with the awful play we know is coming from him, or just start Geno from Week 1 to give him as many snaps as possible.  If he's not Russell Wilson, who cares?  We go 3-13 and draft another QB.

There's no upside to starting Sanchez.  He's not leading us to playoff appearance and he's not teaching Geno anything.  He knows he's gone and even if he WAS a good tutor, he's not going to help the kid out.

I never said anything about Geno Smith's ability to play QB. What we are supposedly talking about is who will start day 1. Guys like Cam Newton start day 1. Guys like Tom Brady sit a year.

All of this "just because" talk it seems to me like you guys want to hand the job to Geno "just because" he isn't Mark.

Meh, Vince Young had similar measurables, sat day 1.  You're acting like body type determines that...I think it has very little to do with the decision.

And I see nothing wrong with advocating Geno over Mark even if your logical is as elementary as, he's not Sanchez.  Because Sanchez is that bad.
