An organizational source said many people around the team believe the mercurial wide receiver is just trying to avoid training camp and he is healthier than he is letting on. In fact, a source said Dr. Robert Anderson, the foot specialist in North Carolina who operated on Holmes, has cleared Holmes to begin football activities, but Holmes has resisted.

Holmes claims he cannot run routes yet and will not give any timetable for his return. It has been 11 months since Holmes suffered a Lisfranc injury in his left foot that required two surgeries. Holmes said he still feels pain in the foot every day when he wakes up.

“I can’t pinpoint a day when it will feel better because every day has been the same up until this point,” Holmes said. “I feel good some days. I don’t the others. This pain won’t go away. It’s something I can’t predict because I have to get up and I have to run. I have to cut. I have to put pressure on it and apply as much pressure as I can to run routes and to feel comfortable.”

There is a theory around the Jets that Holmes will suddenly pronounce himself ready to play when the regular season arrives in two weeks and training camp is through. Holmes also missed most of last year’s training camp with what was listed as “general body soreness” and then a rib injury.

Others inside the Jets think Holmes could wait to see how the team starts the season before deciding when to play. If the team is losing, he may wait a while. If things are going well, he will join the party.

Officially, the Jets have said Holmes has not been cleared by the doctors.

“He seems excited,” coach Rex Ryan said. “I think that’s a good sign. Again, he’s going to lean on the trainers. We’re all going to lean on the trainers and the doctors. When they say he’s ready to go, he’ll be champing at the bit. I can tell you that right now. He’s in great shape.”

Holmes did some running on the field before last weekend’s preseason game with the Jaguars, which made some speculate he was close to returning. Holmes downplayed that idea.

“What you seen on Saturday at the game wasn’t anything in particular extra,” Holmes said. “It was just giving it a try and seeing what I can do.”

The Jets open the season against the Buccaneers on Sept. 8. Holmes said he does not think it’s unrealistic he will be able to play then. Asked if he is holding out hope to be on the field that day, Holmes said, “Why would I hold out anything? If I can go, I will go. If I can’t, I can’t.”

It has been 11 months since Holmes suffered the injury in Week against the 49ers. By comparison, Jaguars running back Maurice Jones-Drew suffered a Lisfranc injury a month after Holmes and has been participating in training camp. He returned to the field last week against the Jets, something members of the organization took note of.

Holmes’ status is like a guessing game around the Jets. While some wonder if he’ll be back in two weeks, others think it could be October.

General manager John Idzik said he was hopeful Holmes is close to returning this week and Ryan has repeatedly praised Holmes’ work rehabbing from the injury.

Holmes seems to be tempering any optimism though and had an interesting response when told Ryan said he looks like he’s in great shape.

“Looks can be deceiving,” Holmes said. “I say that with a smile because if I actually felt as good as I look, I’d definitely be 100 percent ready.”

At the moment, Holmes said he is unable to “be at Santonio Holmes’ level of competition.” He won’t even commit to returning this season.

“I don’t know how to answer that question as far as missing the whole season,” he said. “We have 16 weeks of football. At any point, I could be ready to play and if not I’d be willing to accept it.“

I don't even like Holmes (who does?) and I think this is in doubt.

Summer is almost over :( and he isn't avoiding much at this point. Plus after this injury be isn't going to be pushed as hard as those not coming off his injury. His workouts wouldn't be that intense and it's not like he's sitting at home all day eating Doritos while on the PUP list.

Just because he's a douche doesn't mean he's a slacker.

Oh noes!!!!!!!!! So he doesnt want to play in stupid preseason games and go through stupid offseason program to risk a set back from his injury. WORST PERSON EVER. This is such a big deal!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Personally, I think the whole team should skip training camp and the preseason.

You're so snarky these days.  What happened to the great poster that was, its a shame.

I have no problem with a veteran who's coming off a major injury to not risk a set back.  Different scenarios for certain players, obviously, but its not like he's a rookie or a 2nd year player that absolutely needs an offseason to be effective come game time.

And it's not like it's a new offense with a new quarterback at all.

Maybe we can trade him to the Steelers for a fifth?

I hate Tanny, but I still think it was a great trade.  It was the subsequent contract that was moronic.

I  hated that contract too, but I think Jason did a piece that showed that it was pretty much standard for a player of Holmes caliber.  He does it based on numbers, it's not like he is a guy to overrate Holmes or anything.

i am not a fan of the "What the F happened to you, You used to be beautiful" type posts. If Dbates wants to be 99% snark, best of luck. If Tom wants to go from deviant to predator, hey that's great.  If I want to go from optimist to pessimist, hey that's life. Who is keeping track of these things? People aren't allowed to change?

Hopefully a new QB but he's got a playbook, he's on the practice field, he's in the meetings, he's hearing the calls and the verbiage and apparently he's coaching the young guys up!  I'm not concerned.

They might make that trade, they havent won a SB since they let him go.

You're the second person to say this. It puzzled me then and it puzzles me now. I feel like I've always been snarky.

You have, but its more excessive these days.  I miss the old dbates who provided some content and not just snarky one liners.  TomShane ruined you, go figure.

Meh, he was questionably the #1 WR on the market that offseason and he truly was coming off an incredible year as much as Jets fans like to forget.  He got what the market was demanding for his skills.  That contract wasnt nearly as damning as say Sanchez or Harris.

It definitely was infinitely of a better deal than Sanchez, there's no question about that.  That's not really saying much though.  The main reason I have issue with the contract was not even the overall cost, but the level of guarantees.  It's not his production, but the fact that the guy was a known douche-nozzle, and you simply don't lock yourself into that long of a contract for a guy like that.  I just think that he has so much of his salary guaranteed three years into his deal is kind of crazy for a guy like that.

Yes, but you used to sprinkle in more football talk. You like 50/50 snark and good football talk.

Now you're like 85% snark. That's a whole lot of snark.

85% of the posts on this board merit snark responses. JiF has literally never made a serious football post that wasn't just abject trolling.

Just FYI, I still think I'm beautiful.

Legit LOLed at the Tom line.

Nobody said they weren't. It was merely an observation.

This is as inaccurate as your scouting report on Dwayne Robertson.

He didnt seem to be a dbag here though.  I mean, yeah he took a shot at Schotty after the AFCG...but rightfully so IMO.  That was some of the worst play calling ever.  Otherwise, he was a good soldier and teammate and Sanchez had his best year with him around and clearly favored him.  He was winning games for the Jets.

But I hear ya, I just dont know what the market was demanding...maybe thats what Tanny had to do to secure him.

Santonio Holmes has been medically cleared by a foot specialist to begin football activities, according to a report by the New York Post. But Holmes refuses to practice.

Brian Costello reported that many people around the New York Jets believe Holmes is just trying to avoid training camp and is healthier than he's letting on. Holmes said Wednesday he can't run routes and still feels pain in his foot every morning.

"I can't pinpoint a day when it will feel better because every day has been the same up until this point," Holmes said. "I feel good some days. I don't the others. This pain won't go away."

The Jets have publicly said that Holmes has not been medically cleared. The team is likely to double down on that approach after Costello's report in order to minimize the drama around Holmes. But there's a real concern within the team, according to Costello, that this is only the beginning.

"There is a theory around the Jets that Holmes will suddenly pronounce himself ready to play when the regular season arrives in two weeks and training camp is through," Costello wrote. "Holmes also missed most of last year's training camp with what was listed as 'general body soreness' and then a rib injury.

"Others inside the Jets think Holmes could wait to see how the team starts the season before deciding when to play. If the team is losing, he may wait a while. If things are going well, he will join the party."

This is what happens when teams just can't bear to cut ties with talented players who have clearly soured well past their expiration date with the team. We've seen this standoff coming for a while with sources "close to Holmes" telling reporters he should miss the first month of the season, while the Jets have expressed hope he'd be ready for Week 1. Holmes publicly wasn't even sure if he'd play this season.

Holmes has been the source of a lot of the off-field headaches during the Rex Ryan era. By keeping him around another year, the team invited these kind of stories.
