It's time for the Geno Smith era as Rex Ryan and key NY Jets brass agree it's time to move on from Mark Sanchez

Rex Ryan's shotgun wedding with new boss John Idzik may end in divorce in a few months, but the Jets' Odd Couple agrees that it's time to kick off the Geno Smith era.

The Daily News has learned that Ryan, Idzik and much of the team's key decision makers are on board with moving on from Mark Sanchez.

Although speculation centered on Ryan's desire to cling to Sanchez, sources told the News that Ryan believes that Smith is the better option if healthy.

Sanchez's shoulder injury makes it a no-brainer for Ryan, who is likely to start Smith for the season opener against the Buccaneers on Sunday.

The Jets were so impressed with Smith in the first couple weeks of training camp that Ryan was set to name him the Week 1 starter before the rookie suffered an ankle injury in the preseason opener.

The original plan was to start Smith against the Jaguars in the second preseason game. Ryan, who will have final say after collaborating with Idzik, offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg, quarterbacks coach David Lee and others, was poised to declare Smith the winner in the quarterback competition as long as he didn't implode against Jacksonville, according to sources.

However, the Jets made the mistake of having Smith practice all week in the run-up to the game. Smith didn't play after his ankle predictably didn't get better that week.

Ryan & Co. could have avoided the ensuing mess by resting Smith for a few days to improve his chances of playing against Jacksonville.

Sanchez elevated his play in practice that week, while Smith was "brutal," one day, according to Ryan.

Despite Sanchez's sharp practices, the brain trust simply doesn't fully trust the fifth-year veteran and have grown tired of his repeated red-zone mistakes, according to sources.

Sanchez has committed three turnovers and made one glaring mental mistake in the red-zone in the preseason.

Although Sanchez showed flashes of excellent play in the first two preseason games, the key decision makers don't believe the team can consistently win with him.

Rightly or wrongly, many of them can't forget Sanchez's history: He has committed a league-high 52 turnovers in the past two seasons.

However, Smith's three-interception first half against the Giants last week made it difficult for Ryan to declare him the winner of the "fair and open" competition.

Ryan's curious decision to insert Sanchez into the fourth quarter of the third preseason game behind a makeshift offensive line, ironically, cleared the path for Smith, who admitted that his ankle still isn't 100 percent.

The organization is fully aware of Smith's limitations, but believes that Mornhinweg will be able to tailor streamlined gameplans to accentuate Smith's strengths against specific opponents, according to sources.

The brain trust was pleased with Smith's ability to digest the playbook and perform against Ryan's complicated defense in practices, according to sources.

The organization knows what to expect from Sanchez.

Smith remains a mystery, but it's a risk Ryan & Co. are willing to take.

There is hope in the unknown.

This simply cannot be. It goes against the whole agenda that Bitonti and others have that Idzik undercut Ryan and that Idzik has been ordering Ryan around.

Lol, you should be calling out Mehta and the anti-Rex squadron more than Bit. Speculation centered around Ryan's desire to cling to Sanchez... Who's speculation? Mehta's? Every Rex hater on the board?

That was the BS being paraded around here more than anything else. Now Mehta's saying Rex wanted Geno all along? Pretty funny.

i dont understand why the media is so in love with Geno Smith...it's literally gonna be six weeks of handjobs for this guy until they call for Sanchez to take over. Media is never going to give Simms a shot. It's gonna have to be an act of the universe forcing the Jets to go to Simms...

Especially considering Rex has been entirely objective when it's come to Sanchez the last two years.

On the one hand, starting Geno is the only hope Rex has at prolonging his career. On the other hand, I still think Rex is only on board because Sanchez is hurt.

It wasn't BS and you know it.  Come on, you know that here has been more than ample evidence over the years of Rex's partiality to Sanchez.  Ever heard of another HC getting a tattoo of his wife wearing his starting QBs jersey?  If Rex has gotten over his crush on Sanchez, good for him, but there was no reason to think he had until something like this happened.

Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network followed up Mehta's report and found that Rex "came around" on Geno. Which probably means that Sanchez will be out for a month.

Yep, sanchez hurt, PR leak out that Geno was going to be the starter anyway.. better for Rex, better for Geno.. seems fairly obv

ther eis no reason to expect a rookie to come out guns blazing agains NFL defenses, particularly when he is surrounded by mediocre at best offensive playmakers(?)  But ut us ridiculous to think that Geno will not develop into something without at least a fair hearing first.
