Jets sign Brady Quinn, cut Graham Harrell

The Jets are adding another quarterback to the mix.

Brady Quinn, who was cut by the Seahawks on Monday, will sign with the Jets today. Quinn has previously played for the Browns, Broncos and Chiefs. The Jets have also announced that they are releasing backup quarterback Graham Harrell, who lasted less than a week with the team.

The Jets still haven’t named their starting quarterback after a lengthy competition between Geno Smith and Mark Sanchez, but the shoulder injury suffered by Sanchez in the preseason likely makes Smith the favorite to start for the Jets when they open the season on Sunday.

(Side note: Isn’t it fun that we’re now talking about real, live NFL games that will be happening on Sunday?)

The Jets already had a crowded quarterback situation, and they’ve praised the work of backup quarterback Matt Simms. But they apparently thought they needed even more help at the position, and Quinn has found a new home.

Brady Quinn is a legit backup with NFL experience. Sanchez will be IRd or released.

1. Geno Smith

2. Brady Quinn

3. Matt Simms

Allow Geno Smith to play with no one looking over his shoulder.

Quinn is 29 in Oct.  If Smith sucks, Quinn will replace him.  It may even be stronger that some one is looking over his shoulder.  Or 2 someone's.

Time for overreactions from the media and a lot of you morons.

This just means that instead of cutting Harrell when Sanchez is healthy, they will cut Quinn.  Period.

I think this is the basic scenario.  and if geno gets hurt again, you have a healthy veteran

Jets signed QB Brady Quinn and released QB Graham Harrell.

Quinn enters the fray in Rex Ryan's quarterback carousel, which also includes Geno Smith, Mark Sanchez and Matt Simms. Quinn has gone 4-16 in 20 career starts, holds a 53.9 completion percentage and has a 12:17 TD-to-INT ratio. In other words, the Jets are still grasping at straws. Smith remains the most likely starter in Sunday's opener against the Bucs.

Jets sign QB Brady Quinn; release Graham Harrell

The Jets quarterback carousel is the ride that keeps on giving.

The team announced Monday that they signed Brady Quinn (following a reported morning workout) and released last week's QB signee Graham Harrell.

Quinn -- who was drafted 22nd overall by the Browns back in 2007 -- tweeted his release from the Seahawks Saturday. The former Notre Dame quarterback has bounced around from Cleveland to Denver to Kansas City to Seattle -- and now Florham Park.

Quinn, 28, had been battling Tarvaris Jackson for the Seahawks' backup job behind Russell Wilson. He threw for 271 yards and two touchdowns this preseason for Seattle, but coach Pete Carroll and the rest of the staff ultimately went with Jackson.

With the addition of Quinn, the Jets now have four quarterbacks. But they also have an experienced veteran alongside rookie Geno Smith. Mark Sanchez has been sidelined since the Jets-Giants preseason game, when he suffered a hard hit to the shoulder from defensive tackle Marvin Austin. The fifth-year quarterback has been getting treatment since then and hasn't thrown a football during the media portion of practice.

He currently is listed as day-to-day and Rex Ryan has said he won't offer a medical update until Wednesday's league-mandated injury report is due. But the Quinn signing raises the question: Will Jets fans ever see Sanchez take the field again?

It's clear Sanchez's shoulder injury is more serious than the Jets let on. And that means, there's always the possibility that they place him on injured reserve (and worse, for Sanchez fans, cut him during the season).

Harrell was signed last week after backup Greg McElroy reinjured his knee. McElroy was released Saturday, as the Jets chose to keep Matt Simms.

Jets sign QB Brady Quinn, release QB Harrell

Per @nyjets on Twitter

Im guessing they are going to IR Mark Snchez by the deadline on Wednesday this saves us money and ends Marks tenure as a Jet. Time to move on.

It doesn't save us cash.

The Jets’ quarterback carousel continued Monday, when they released Graham Harrell and signed Brady Quinn, who had just lost Seattle’s backup job to Tarvaris Jackson.

The Jets still haven’t officially named a starter for Sunday’s opener against Tampa Bay, but rookie Geno Smith is preparing to start the game, since Mark Sanchez is nursing a right (throwing) shoulder injury.

The Jets signed Harrell last week after Green Bay cut him. At that point, the Jets had five quarterbacks: Smith, Sanchez, Harrell, Matt Simms and Greg McElroy.

Harrell played just one snap, a kneel-down, in Thursday’s preseason finale against Philadelphia. Simms shined in the game, completing 33 of 44 passes for 285 yards. McElroy was unable to play because of a lingering knee injury that he aggravated earlier in the week.

When the roster was trimmed to 53 players on Saturday, the Jets decided to keep Simms and release McElroy, who was Sanchez’s backup last season. McElroy is now on Cincinnati’s practice squad.

Simms, an undrafted free agent in 2012, has never played in an NFL game. The Jets signed him last May, released him in August and signed him again in December. So he has barely even been on an NFL team. In college, he started just 10 games of major conference football – eight in 2010 and two in 2011, all at Tennessee.

With McElroy gone and Sanchez hurt, the Jets had no backup quarterbacks with significant NFL experience. Harrell, undrafted in 2009, didn’t appear in an NFL game until last season, when he played in four as Aaron Rodgers’ backup in Green Bay and completed two of four passes.

Quinn, the 22nd overall pick in 2007, gives the Jets more experience behind Smith. He played in 14 games over three seasons with Cleveland, the team that drafted him, and started 12 of those games, including nine in 2009. He was traded to Denver in 2010, but did not play in any games that season or in 2011, when the Broncos opted for a second-year quarterback named Tim Tebow as their starter.

Quinn was Kansas City’s backup last season and ended up playing in 10 games and starting eight, after Matt Cassel suffered a concussion. The Chiefs went 1-7 in the games Quinn started. He finished the season with a 56.9-percent completion rate (the best of his career), two touchdowns and eight interceptions. For his career, he has completed 53.8 percent of his passes for 12 touchdowns and 17 picks in 24 games (20 starts).

So Quinn certainly isn’t starting quarterback material. But he will turn 29 years old next month and could be a mentoring figure for Smith, who turns 23 next month, as the Jets might have no choice but to weather the hiccups Smith might endure in his rookie season.
