Starts here in Vancouver today. A very big event.

And you guys, yep the Americans, are the huge fav to win it all. Most of the Canadian team that won it last year turned pro and we have a very young team this year. Good luck to you.

Is this even a story in the U.S.?

Or on TV?

cheers,

d

The games are in Vancouver.

It's the "We hate America" thing.

Chill, guys.

Yeah, there's been some assholes in this country that have boo'd things American. They are the minority.

Hockey is about the only thing that we can compete with the U.S. in and have a chance of winning.

In this case, it's like cheering against a better team and hoping they lose to make it easier for you.

Side note from that last post is there ARE a lot of people here from the competing countries as well.

Which I'd understand, if the American anthem hadn't been boo'ed in Vancouver before.

I've got no hard feelings about it. I understand that the United States isn't exactly the most popular thing in the world. Or in hockey. Just how it goes, sometimes.

Besides Doug... I know a few bad apples spoil the whole bunch. No hard feelings at all.

And those American kids are going to run away with the WJC

Canada's TSN has the rights here. They are affiliated with ESPN (owned I think) so you may find it on ESPN 2 or something.

Not on the Duce. They're carrying college basketball and the world series of poker... ESPN has the Giants and Raiders.... and CBC has the Leafs and Devils. And the Oilers and Flames. damn...

2-0 U.S. beats Finland at world juniorsAssociated Press

VANCOUVER, British Columbia -- University of Minnesota forward Blake Wheeler scored two goals to help the United States beat Finland 6-5 on Wednesday night in the world junior hockey championships.

The 6-foot-4, 215-pound Wheeler, drafted fifth overall last summer by the Phoenix Coyotes, made a pretty play on his second goal to put the United States up 5-3 with 42 seconds left in the second period. Wheeler took a pass from Bobby Ryan on his backhand, neatly pulled it to his forehand, then beat goalie Karri Ramo.

Ryan, who plays for Owen Sound in the Ontario Hockey League, had a power-play goal and two assists for the Americans (2-0 in Group A play).

Tom Fritsche (Ohio State), Brian Lee (North Dakota) and Kevin Porter (Michigan) also had power-play goals for the United States.

Rob Schremp, the leading scorer in the OHL for London, added three assists. Minnesota freshman star Phil Kessel, projected to be the first pick in the next NHL draft, had two assists, giving him seven for the tournament.

Mikko Alikoski, Aki Seitsonen, Lauri Tukonen, Henri Heino and Teemu Laakso scored for Finland (0-2).

In the other Group A game at PNE Coliseum, Dustin Boyd and Steve Downie each had a goal and an assist in Canada's 4-3 victory over Switzerland.

Tom Pyatt and David Bolland also scored for Canada (2-0), which had a 4-1 lead midway through the second period. Julien Sprunger had a goal and an assist for Switzerland (1-1), and Eric Blum and Yannick Weber also scored.

"We've got to get better and we will get better," Canada coach Brent Sutter said. "That being said, our opponent was a tough opponent. At the end of a day, it's a win."

Justin Pogge made 17 saves for his second straight victory for Canada, 16-0 against Switzerland in tournament history.

In Kamloops, Sebastian Karlsson, Johannes Salmonsson and Oscar Hedman scored goals in Sweden's 3-2 victory over the Czech Republic in Group B. Tomas Kana and Vladimir Sobotka scored for the Czech Republic. Both teams are 1-1.

In Kelowna, Evgeni Malkin scored once and set up another goal in Russia's five-goal first period in a 6-2 victory over Slovakia in Group B.

Gennady Churilov, Nikolai Lemtyugov, Enver Lisin, Ilia Zubov and Alexei Emelin also scored for Russia (2-0). Andrej Sekera and Stanislav Lascek scored for Slovakia (1-1).

USA and Canada looks like battle of unbeatens on New Year's Eve-too bad no channel I get will show it

Big game today. All the bars here will be switching from NFL to junior hockey at 3:30 west coast time.

Here's come TV news copied from the U.S. hockey site.

Team USA (2-0-1) faces Canada (3-0-0) Saturday at 7 p.m. EST in a game that can be seen live primarily on FOX Sports Net North and heard on usahockey.com.

Might want to check that time, seems to be some confusion. Maybe the 3:30 local start is the pregame stuff.

Here you go. The U.S. may have been looking past Switz to the Canada game.

VANCOUVER, B.C. -- Switzerland scored a pair of third-period power play goals to gain a 2-2 tie with the 2006 U.S. National Junior Team before 12,130 spectators at the Pacific Coliseum in its third game at the 2006 International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championship.
