Millwood agrees to five-year deal with Rangers

Millwood agrees to five-year deal with Rangers

By STEPHEN HAWKINS, AP Sports Writer

December 26, 2005

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) -- Free agent pitcher Kevin Millwood reached a preliminary agreement on a $60 million, five-year contract with Texas, giving the Rangers the legitimate No. 1 starter they have been seeking.

Texas can void the fifth year of the deal if Millwood doesn't pitch a certain number of innings in earlier years of the contract. Millwood is expected to undergo a physical Tuesday, and the deal likely will be finalized Wednesday.

Details of the deal were disclosed by two people familiar with negotiations who spoke on condition of anonymity because the contract had not been finalized. Millwood's decision to accept Texas' offer was first reported by the Fort Worth Star-Telegram on its Web site.

Millwood had a 2.86 ERA to lead the American League last season, his only season for Cleveland. The right-hander, who turned 31 Saturday, rejected a salary arbitration offer from the Indians.

Millwood, who also was sought by Boston, will be the No. 1 starter in a revamped Texas rotation, already bolstered by two trades this month. The Rangers got former All-Star right-hander Vicente Padilla from Philadelphia and acquired Adam Eaton from San Diego.

In nine major league seasons, Millwood is 107-75 with a 3.76 ERA. He won at least 17 games in three of his six seasons with Atlanta (1997-2002) and was an All-Star in 1999. He pitched two seasons for Philadelphia before going to Cleveland last year.

AP Baseball Writer Ronald Blum in New York contributed to this report.

5 year 60M?

Too much.

That's it, SJ ... You Got the right idea ... You fellas Just Go right on being fiscally responsible 8)

That's Just the way the Yankees like it

This is like the arms race of the 70's and 80's ... Reagan knew he would eventually bankrupt the Soviet Union if we instituted an all out arms race, and eventually that would break them down and lead to their fall

I think that's what we're seeing here ... for awhile the Sox tried to spend with the Yankees, but now the wheels are falling off

BIG STEIN employed the Reagan strategy to perfection

Mr. Henry ... TEAR DOWN THAT WALL!!

hey SJ, didnt the Red Sox have an extra 13 million to spend on pitching that they saved from not re-signing Damon?

Now they have an extra 25 million

Ooohhhhhhhhh.

You're cruel. Heh heh.

Seriously, I am surprised the Bosox did not jump for Millwood. He would have solidified that rotation, which still has a questionable Schilling, and a guy, Wells, who wants out, badly. Manny also wants out, and with Mueller, Millar, Cabrera, Damon, and a few other pieces gone, 2004 seems like a long time ago to those Bosox fans.

Fear not, 2090 is just around the corner.

Agree with SJ, Millwood not worth that contract to the RedSox. Not even close.

The Rangers had to nail Millwood as for once they need to enter a season with decent Starting Pitching. I understand them overpaying .

The Sox already have 5 or 6 starters and only want to add a starter so they can trade a Clement or Arrojo for a CF, SS.

Another good move by the Sox not going too many dollars and years on a free agent.

The Sox rotation is looking fine if you ask me:

Schilling

Beckett

Wells

Wakefield

Clement/ Jonathon Pabelbonjovi / Arroyo / Jon Lester

If Wells craps out, there are enough stallions in the pen to take that slot. 06 will be Papelbon's year.

That is the "glass-is -half-full" way of looking at things. I see things differently.

Schilling. Still not haelthy, since Oct. 2004.

Beckett. At least 1 trip to the Dl, if not more, for carious durations.

Wells - He wants out, and is nearing the end. Fat and out of shape can only get you by for so long.

Wakefield. You guys all question Randy and his abilities at his age. Timmy is no youngster either.

Clement. Has he won a game after July in his career?

Arroyo. If he's so good, why is he in every trade rumor, or so it seems?

Anyway, I will take the Yankees rotation over the above any day.

So...let me get this straight!?!?!?

The usual suspect Yankee honks are on here killing the Red Sox for not giving Kevin Millwood (!!!) 5 years and $60 million. Do I have it right? This is like a dream come true for me!

There is alot to cover here:

1. How 'bout you kill Texas, who really deserve to be killed. How could you give this guy THAT kind of money. What a waste...you might as well bring back A-Rod if you want to friutlessly p*ss away that much cash.

2. Some retard said "the Bosox had $13 mil to spend on letting Johnny go..." Um, no. Johnny was getting $8 mil per year, ABOUT what he is worth (a little less probably) so they have about $8 mil to spend.

3. It seems like the Yankees, with the numerous starting pitching questions of their own, coulda used the services of this guy, does it not? How about one of you brings that up and is objective for once?

4. Speaking of the Yankees...why are you all so obsessed with the Red Sox? Is it because you havent won a world title in the new millenium and we have? Damn, thats pathetic. This must be what Bostonians USED TO sound like when we were winning the offseason world series every year.

You guys really haven't even won that WS to often either. So don't go on bragging about being off-season champs. Maybe you have won it once in 86 years. About as often as you win a real WS.

We were talking about the Rangers signing Millwood. I am still going with the opinion that they overpaid, and did not improve themselves all that much, as Millwood replaces Rogers, who had an excellent season last year. His 195 innings and sub 3.50 ERA will be difficult to duplicate in that ballpark.

However, I found this blurb in an article on fossports.com:

Take a look at these 2005 home-road splits for three prominent Ranger hitters (one of whom is no longer a Ranger):

Hitter AVG/OBP/SLG at home AVG/OBP/SLG on the road

Hank Blalock .297/.361/.534 .231/.276/.335

Alfonso Soriano .315/.355/.656 .224/.265/.374

Mark Teixeria .334/.411/.698 .270/.349/.459

Those are some stark differences. Most hitters (except for those playing their home games in extreme pitcher's parks) tend to perform better at home than on the road, but that doesn't explain away these splits.

The Rangers play in a park that is very similar to Coors Field, when you come right down to it. Small wonder they have a tough time getting decent pitching.

Those are Johnny Damon like splits.

To be honest though the Rangers never really chase SP in free agency.

It was as if the Chan Ho Park disaster scared the daylights out of them.

The Millwoood contract length is crazy but you are probably correct in that 5 yrs was the only way to get him.

The Sox again were smart to take a pass once it got out of hand.
