Green Day: Jets hurried, Steelers rested

Minutes after Monday night's dramatic win in Atlanta, Rex Ryan made a sarcastic comment about this week's schedule, noting the New York Jets' quick turnaround and the Pittsburgh Steelers' two-week layoff.

After their loss to the Minnesota Vikings in London, the Steelers (0-4) went right into their bye week. They will be well-rested for Sunday's game at MetLife Stadium. As for the Jets, they didn't return home until 5 a.m. Tuesday. The coaches went to work immediately on the game plan, cramming a lot of prep work into one day -- a challenge when facing a non-divisional foe. That they have a rookie quarterback makes it harder, because he has less time to study up on Dick LeBeau's complex defensive scheme.

It doesn't seem fair, but there are always scheduling quirks that can't be avoided. On paper, it should be a mismatch, as the Steelers are off to their worst start since 1968. But they're a proud franchise and they always cause problems for the Jets. The Steelers own the all-time series, 18-4, including two postseason wins.

ICYMI: As expected, QB Mark Sanchez decided to have shoulder surgery to repair a torn labrum. It happened late Tuesday, according to the Jets. He's done for the remainder of the season, and likely done in New York. ... Pass-rushing specialist Antwan Barnes went for tests Tuesday on his injured knee. No word on the severity. Ryan didn't sound overly optimistic. ... Yep, the Jets are playing the no-respect card. ... OC Marty Mornhinweg has some Rex in him; he likes to attack.

let everyone talk about how the Steelers will win. really, the Jets do better when everyone writes them off as sure losers.

I feel like we play Pittsburgh every year though. what's with that?

Because we have lately.

But this is the first time in a while that we're playing them at home.  It seems like we always have to go to Pittsburgh.

The only saving grace about this game is the the Steelers OL is absolutely terrible.  Like, holy sh*t terrible.  We can make them one dimensional easily with their inability to run the ball and Rex has been able to frustrate Big Ben in the past.

The scary part is, LeBeau with 2 weeks to prepare for a rookie and Geno has 6 days to prepare for LeBeau.  That's scary.  Yeah, this Steelers D isnt the same...but its still scary.

Im excited for this Game. Despite the matchup and who has what in recent weeks talks. There is 1 Major thing I love about it. The Jets have a winnable game to get to 4-2 while the Pats have a losable game to get to 4-2. its like a rematch of the 9-2 battle in which we lost 45-3.

Only Diff is, the patriots are depleted and the jets dont have sanchez and dont have to play in foxboro

If the Jets are 5-2 with a game lead over the 4-3 Patriots. We can inject the kool aid into our Veins with a needle ;)

In general, a team coming off MNF probably shouldn't be playing a team coming off a bye week or a Thusday night game.  Particularly an away MNF game.  But that's the NFL for you.  Just wait until they have teams flying back from London to Seattle after a Monday night game.

Yeah, you always know the season is done for as soon as the media and general public starts giving the Jets a chance.

This might be the one week where the Jets could, and perhaps should, go with the run first approach, then starting working in the play action as the game goes along.  With the combination of all of the circumstances, including the short week and rookie QB against a team like the Steelers, no reason not to play to what has been their weakness on defense anyway.  While Geno looked great this week, that's no reason to think you still shouldn't try to be a bit more cautious with him when the situation warrants it.

It is bullsh*t...but nothing you can do.

This game is going to be extremely difficult. Two things in our favor- the Steelers oline sucks and Todd Haley is a terrible human.

Both have been beyond evident this year and their running game is pedestrian. I hate giving Lebeau two weeks to prepare for anyone, let alone a rookie QB, but they have been getting absolutely torn up in the running game and if we can do that consistently and keep their offense off the field, I'm pretty confident we can win this assuming we don't turn the ball over more than once (which is a big if).

The other big thing is that the steelers aren't creating turnovers like they used to; now this could be due to teams just running on them all day and not giving them the opportunity or they're just getting old.  I'm pretty sure they have only two forced turnovers; 0 ints and 2 ff.  If Geno protects the ball again and the running game finds a groove, it'll be a close one.  Pitt is still capable of putting up big points.

The Steelers have been having trouble stopping the run.  Pound the ball and then take some chances with guys that are one on one. Something of an offensive game like they had against Buffalo.

Too bad about Barnes.  I think his speed was going to be very helpful.  Especially as the big fellas start taking control up front.  We will see more Garrett McIntyre now.  He didn't get much done against Atlanta and he was getting his chances one on one.

This game will come down to whether or not our DL can bring down Rothlisbunger on first contact. With that horrid O-line, it is a given that our DL will spend much of the night in their backfield, but the reason Big Ben is who he is is because he walks out of tackles routinely. IF we get a  hand on him, he needs to be planted.

I'm not worried about their run game. Leveon Bell looks okay, but we stuff the run. Period.

Antonio Brown and Heath Miller. Heath could have a field day against us.

This is pretty spot on. RB's hardly matter at this point, Jets D line has gobbled em all up. Its the actual sacking of Ben I look forward to. I see us taking him down 5 times.

Their OL is so putrid, anything less than 5 is a dissapointment. We Shall see, honestly I dont care how. Just give us a 4-2 record against the 4-2 patriots and I will be happy. We need to see them when Geno isnt making his second start on 2 days rest

Definitely a bummer, I liked Barnes' speed on the outside on passing downs quite a bit, but maybe it's time the legend of Ricky Sapp finally comes to fruition. I can't tell if it's his inability to stay healthy that's hurting him or just lack of opportunity, because it's certainly not lack of physical ability or willing to hit.

Is it?

They are ranked 10th in total yards allowed. 23rd in points per game. 25th in rushing yards allowed per game. They have yet to create a single turnover and have only forced 2 fumbles. Football outsiders ranks them 20th in the league. (For perspective, the Jets are ranked 4th.)

They really aren't scary at all. Dick LeBeau is scary. I have no doubt he can scheme to confuse Geno. The question is: can these players execute his game plan? So far the answer has been a resounding "no." Let's hope they don't start to get it this week.

My money's on us losing both.

I don't know man...I so want to believe in this team! they seem different from past teams but I guess they always do until the collapse happens.

These guys really seem to get along, whether it be Idzik, Revis leaving, or no more Sanchez at QB....the team seems tight knit. Haven't heard about any issues or problems they have with each other. Seems like these young guys are stepping up and being leaders, including Geno. Actually apologizing face to face to the defense for the turnovers might not seem like a big deal but I'm sure that meant a lot in that locker room and actually backing it up means even more!

Having a team that's close and plays hard for each other rather than just hard for themselves can go a long way!

Garrett McIntyre will get plenty of run.  I think the biggest problem with McIntyre is he is a DE and not an OLB and he is undersized to play 3-4DE.  Replacing Barnes I don' t think that is an issue.  Barnes was basically a DE/pass rush specialist (are they abbreviating this yet?)

My money's on us losing both.

3-13?

dude steelers are one of the worst teams in the league. Is it really gonna be a big deal when we beat an 0-4 team who is probably gonna come out flat

Why would they come out flat?  They've had 2 weeks to look at film of Geno and be ready to go.  They're not going to continue to play poorly forever.  They're at least capable of being a 7-9 type of team based on their history.  If they go 7-5 down the stretch would you honestly say you'll be surprised?

The old Jet D line could never get Ben to the ground.  Let's see how the new guys do.

teams come out flat when theyve had a long layoff dont they?

I would be surprised if they come close to a .500 season. History doesnt mean anything when the team doesnt have any great talent compared to the good teams
